Games are only getting bigger

If you're planning on downloading your games digitally, you should try to aim for the biggest microSD card you can afford. Nintendo Switch games are launching with bigger and bigger file sizes every week. From open world games like Zelda: Breath of the Wild to games jam-packed with characters like Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, you will eventually find yourself quickly running out of space.

Our recommendation is to go no smaller than 64GB. This is a comfortable size that would allow you to hold a couple of big games at around 14GB each, a couple of medium-sized games at around half that mark, and a smattering of smaller games to fill out the bottom (or use that space for another big game or two).

You should expect to do some shuffling in the future at that size, but as long as you are OK regularly downloading your games as they rotate in and out of your playing list, you'll get by just fine. Don't forget that you can use the internal and external storage simultaneously, so think of it as you having 96GB!

Of course, if you have ALL the games in the world and want to play all of them at a moment's notice, you'll want to look at something like Samsung's 256GB EVO+ microSD card.

Going with cartridges? You might not need a microSD card

The Nintendo Switch is one of the few gaming consoles remaining that doesn't install game data when using physical media (cartridges). As such, the 32GB of internal storage inside might be more than enough if you're only planning on buying physical copies of your game.

You'll still want to consider whether you want to download some digital-only titles, but even then you can squeeze a few downloads from the eShop right onto your Nintendo Switch without ever having to buy a card. Be sure to think long and hard about how you'll buy your Switch games before committing to a microSD card.
