Peak Design launches into mobile with cases and mounting accessories

Mobile by Peak Design has a new accessory lineup for anything you can imagine.

What you need to know

  • Peak Design has launched its latest Kickstarter.
  • Mobile by Peak Design is a new collection of cases, mounts, and accessories for phones.
  • The Kickstarter has already surpassed its backing goal by over $500,000.

Peak Design, the company behind many of the popular straps, mounts, tripods, and backpacks photographers and videographers use on the regular, have announced that they are diving into the world of mobile accessories. The company has launched its latest Kickstarter for Mobile by Peak Design, a new collection of mobile phone cases, mounts, and other accessories.

The company is attempting to combat "clunky, bulky, unattractive mobile accessories" with SlimLink, its new mounting technology that will apparently be compatible with Apple's new MagSafe technology at launch. Peak Design Founder and CEO Peter Dering says that the company has been working on the mounting technology for four years.

"Phones are the most powerful tools in the world, and our goal was to create the most powerful accessories for them. We've been developing the SlimLink architecture for 4 years, and we didn't stop until our cases and mounts looked better, felt better, and worked better than anything else out there."

Mobile by Peak Design's ecosystem starts with the Everyday Case, a polycarbonate phone case wrapped in what Peak Design claims to be a high-performance nylon canvas fabric. The company will launch with cases for both the iPhone and Samsung and plans to continue to add more brands as time goes on. For those currently without an iPhone or Samsung phone, a slim adhesive adapter will be available.

In addition to the case, the collection includes a ton of other accessories including mounts for cars, bicycles, motorcycles, as well as the home or office. They have also developed a mobile wallet and a range of accessories specifically for photographers and filmmakers.

Each accessory was developed by a team of engineers over the course of 2 years and designed to outperform leading competitors in ease-of-use, form factor, ruggedness, and aesthetics. All accessories are built from premium materials, individually serialized, and guaranteed for life.

The Kickstarter for Mobile by Peak Design is now accepting backings. At the time of this article, it has already reached $636,574 of its original $100,000 goal. The company says that the lineup will begin shipping to customers, as well as hit major retailers, in the spring of 2021.

LG’s rollable TV finally goes on sale for $87,000

GIF by Chris Welch / The Verge

LG has announced that its world-first rollable TV is finally going on sale, albeit in limited fashion. The 65-inch LG Signature OLED R is now available at seven consumer electronics store throughout South Korea and will cost 100 million won, or more than $87,000.

The Signature OLED R is built around a flexible OLED panel that LG describes with characteristic restraint as “the most innovative development in television technology in decades.” Because of its flexible nature, it can retract partially or fully into its base, adapting to different aspect ratios or hiding the panel completely when not in use.

“LG’s exquisite creation liberates users from the limitations of the wall, enabling owners to curate their living...

The Mandalorian and Baby Yoda’s adventures continue in brand new look at season two

The Mandalorian’s second season is just days away from premiering on Disney Plus, and a new trailer for the Star Wars series teases what fans can expect.

Most of the trailer focused on the Mando’s continued adventures with the Child, including an ominous moment where he’s warned that the worlds he’s trying to visit are no places for a child. Much like executive producers Jon Favreau and Dave Filoni teased in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the show looks like it will tackle more substantial narrative lines than we got in the first season.

Picking up essentially where the last season left off, The Mandalorian’s second season will explore a much “larger story in the world,” according to Favreau. While many of the episodes in the...

Apple's Rachel Newman talks Apple Music TV in new interview

Relive the good old days of music video television.

What you need to know

  • Rachel Newman, Apple's Global head of editorial and content, sat down with Variety today.
  • The executive talked about Apple Music TV, the company's new music video streaming channel.
  • It will stream music videos, concerts, interviews, and more 24/7.

Earlier today, Apple launched Apple Music TV, a 24-hour streaming channel fully devoted to music videos and artists. To further detail the new service, Rachel Newman, Apple's Global head of editorial and content, sat down to talk with Variety in a new interview.

When asked about what the service will generally look like, Newman says that it will truly be based around pop hits.

"It's really contemporary, well-known hits, so if we have a sample representation of artists, it would be Drake, Dua Lipa, Cardi, B, BTS, Justin Bieber and Billie Eilish. Generally it's very intentionally music videos interspersed with short-form video interstitial content, along with the odd long-form piece when it's around special events, like the all-day Bruce takeover."

When asked about special events, like the upcoming Bruce Springsteen takeover of Apple Music TV, Newman said that they will occasionally take over the service with interviews, archival footage, and live fan events where viewers can interact with the artists.

"Occasionally there will be special events. This is to celebrate the release of the documentary which is on Apple TV Plus and album release, so there will be some retrospective concert footage with music videos and Zane's 60-minute sit-down interview with Bruce. That all leads into a fan-only event broadcast that will be broadcast on Apple Music as well as the music video channel — at (11 p.m. ET), just ahead of the album being launched, there's a live event for a thousand superfans who are part of a closed-off virtual environment where they can communicate with Bruce and ask questions; Zane Lowe presents this and they talk about the album and play back it back. We're with the artist as the album is released, so that's quite special."

Newman had mentioned that the channel would also include "interstitial" content as well. When asked about this, the executive said that it will be bringing some of the live interviews they have done, and will do, with artists as they relate to the songs featured on the music video channel.

"We've produced a ton of content out of our live radio stations — Apple Music 1, Hits and Country — and while a lot of that content is radio, we produce video content in support of those efforts, so we will be using the TV channel to highlight some of those fantastic interviews with all of our hosts. So it will be a combination of interviews in full playing out between songs and also shorter-form pieces, like Katy Perry talking about her new track and things like that, taking pieces of content from previous interviews and then buttoning them up next to the appropriate song."

Variety compared Apple's new service to the old-school MTV that many of us enjoyed years ago, and Newman essentially agreed with that, saying that it's a great way to "set and forget" your music.

"I think the purpose of this is really to create another space for consumers to enjoy music. We want to serve all kinds of music lovers, and often even lean-forward music fans want a lean-back solution that they can set and forget. We just think it's an awesome way to experience music."

Perhaps the best part of all, Apple Music TV will have no ads, whatsoever.

After outcry, Microsoft presses pause on unsolicited Windows 10 web app installs

Microsoft Windows 10 stock

On Saturday, I pointed out how Microsoft force-restarting Windows 10 computers to install unwanted web apps was the latest proof you don’t own your own Windows PC. Today, the company says it was at least partly a mistake — and will be pausing the “migration” that brought web apps to your Start Menu this way.

Originally, Microsoft tells The Verge, the idea was that any website you pinned to the Start Menu would launch in Microsoft Edge. If your website of choice had a PWA web app version, the Edge browser could automatically launch that as well. But — in what Microsoft seems to be calling a bug, though we’re trying to get clarity as to which part was the bug — the change also made it look like existing web shortcuts to its own Microsoft...

The iPhone 12 will not support 5G in Dual SIM mode at launch

Want 5G with your iPhone 12? Use a single SIM for now.

What you need to know

  • The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro will not support 5G in Dual SIM mode at launch.
  • An internal document from Apple says that eSIM only customers will be able to use 5G at launch.
  • An internal document from Verizon says Apple plans to add support for 5G in Dual SIM later this year.

Reported by MacRumors, Apple plans to bring 5G to iPhone owners using Dual SIM in a software update by the end of the year.

According to an internal document at Apple that was shared on Reddit, 5G will not be available to those using Dual SIM on the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro when the device launches this Friday. If customers are using eSIM only, however, 5G should work just fine.

"Does 5G work with Dual SIM?" When using two lines in Dual SIM mode, 5G data isn't supported on either line and will fall back to 4G LTE. If customers are using eSIM only and are on a 5G supported carrier and service plan, they'll have 5G access.

However, according to an internal document shared with Verizon employees, Apple does plan to enable 5G in Dual SIM mode in a software update later this year.

According to an internal Verizon slide obtained by MacRumors, however, Apple plans to enable 5G support in Dual SIM mode with a software update later this year. In the meantime, Verizon says that eSIM customers must remove the physical SIM from their iPhone 12 or iPhone 12 Pro to access its 5G network.

All of Apple's new iPhone models support 5G. In order to take advantage of the new speeds, iPhone 12 owners must ensure that they are on a 5G supported plan with their carrier. Apple also says that, for those who are traveling, they can access 5G internationally by purchasing a temporary plan and using either a physical SIM card or eSIM.

The new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro are hitting store shelves and people's doorsteps this Friday, October 23. The iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max will go on pre-order on November 6 and be available on November 13, the same dates as the new HomePod mini.

The newly designed Xbox app is officially available for iOS

The newly designed Xbox app comes to iOS.

What you need to know

  • The mobile Xbox app has long been criticized of being slow and bloated by Android and iOS users.
  • Microsoft recently rolled out a completely redesigned and rebuilt Xbox app to be consistent with the New Xbox Experience.
  • The app is beautiful on Android, and is now coming to iOS officially after a limited launch on TestFlight.
  • The new Xbox app looks great on iPhones, and also adds support for Xbox remote play on iOS.

The New Xbox Experience is a dramatic effort from Microsoft to make the UI and UX experience across everything Xbox beautiful, inclusive, and consistent. This started with a new Xbox app for PC back in 2019, and has spread across everything Xbox in recent months, leading up to the launch of the next-gen Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. The mobile Xbox app for Android recently was rebuilt from the ground up and redesigned with the New Xbox Experience in mind, and now that app is finally coming to Apple's iOS.

The app looks to be very similar to its Android counterpart, and surprisingly has a nearly identical feature set, including the existence of Xbox remote play. Xbox remote play allows players to stream any Xbox game directly from their Xbox console at home to their mobile device with a compatible Bluetooth controller, giving you on-the-go console-quality gaming. With the recent controversies surrounding Xbox Cloud Gaming (aka Project xCloud) being blocked by Apple on iOS, it's interesting to see this feature being regarded as an acceptable workaround.

Xbox remote play isn't the exact same as Xbox Cloud Gaming, and still requires that you have an Xbox console at home that no one is using, but iOS users will still be able to enjoy this nifty feature and all the other goodies that come along with the new Xbox app, including an increased focus on social features and a universal search function. If you want to grab the new Xbox app, you can download it directly from the Apple App Store.

The all-new Xbox app for Android and iOS lets users access their Xbox accounts and view video games, but it's the ability to stream and play console games right on your phone that is really exciting.
