Another month of excitement is in store for Pokémon Go players in October

October brings Shedinja, Legendary Raids, Fashion, Meowths, and Halloween to Pokémon Go!

What you need to know

  • October 2020 events for Pokémon Go have been announced.
  • Zapdos, Moltres, Giratina, and more will be featured in Legendary Raids.
  • A fashion themed event and a Meowth day will precede the excitement of Halloween.

Niantic announced the events in Pokémon Go for October and it's going to be another exciting month for Trainers. For starters, Shedinja will be back as the Research Breakthrough Reward Encounter. The evolutionary byproduct of Nincada, Shedinja cannot be caught or evolved under normal circumstances in Pokémon Go, so if you missed out last time, you'll have another shot to catch one.

Legendary Raids will include at least four different Pokémon this month, including:

  • Zapdos between Friday, September 25 and Friday, October 2.
  • Moltres between Friday, October 2 and Friday, October 9.
  • Giratina Origin Forme between Friday, October 9 and Friday, October 23.

The fourth (or more) Legendary Raid Pokémon will be announced later in the month when we learn more about the Halloween event. Last year, players were able to challenge the mythical Pokémon Darkrai so many are hopeful for the powerful Dark type's return.

The Spotlight Hours for October will be:

  • October 6: World Cap Pikachu and double Catch XP.
  • October 13: Original Cap Pikachu and double Catch Candy.
  • October 20: Shuppet and double Transfer Candy.
  • October 27: Duskull and double Evolution XP.

An Event will be held from Friday October 2 until Thursday October 8, celebrating Paris Fashion Week. This event will feature costumed Pokémon, shiny Kriketot, and more. Another event will be held on Saturday, October 10, from 8 AM to 10 PM local time, featuring a timed Special Research focused on Meowth. During this event, players will be able to encounter all three regional variants of Meowth, complete special Field Research, and purchase a special box with Incense, Pinap Berries, and Lucky Eggs.

The biggest event of the month, however, will be Halloween. Currently, there is little information as to what Halloween will bring to Pokémon Go, but it's always a huge event for the community. With many places still impacted by the global pandemic, Niantic is sure to add in some extra fun for players this year.

Are you excited for all the new fun coming to Pokémon Go this October? Which event or Legendary Pokémon are you most looking forward to? Let us know in the comments below and be sure to check back for our in depth coverage of the Pokémon Go's Halloween event! In the meantime, check out our Complete Pokédex, as well as our many Pokémon Go guides so you can be a Pokémon Master!

California looks to ban gas guzzlers – but legal hurdles abound

California Governor Gavin Newsom made a bold attempt today to ban sales of new gas-guzzling cars and trucks, marking a critical step in the state’s quest to become carbon neutral by 2045. But the effort to clean up the state’s largest source of climate emissions is almost certain to face serious legal challenges, particularly if President Donald Trump is re-elected in November.

Newsom issued an executive order that directs state agencies, including the California Air Resources Board, to develop regulations requiring every new passenger car and truck sold in the state to be zero-emissions vehicles by 2035. That pretty much limits future sales to electric vehicles (EVs) powered by batteries or hydrogen fuel cells. Similar rules would go into effect for most medium and heavy-duty vehicles by 2045.

If those rules are enacted, the roughly 2 million new vehicles sold in the state each year will all suddenly be EVs, providing a huge boost to the still nascent sector.

“California policy, especially automotive policy, has cascading effects across the US and even internationally, just because of the scale of our market,” says Alissa Kendall, professor of civil and environmental engineering at the University of California, Davis.

Indeed, the order would mean more auto companies will produce more EV lines, scaling up manufacturing and driving down costs. The growing market would, in turn, create greater incentives to build out the charging or hydrogen fueling infrastructure necessary to support it all.

The move also could make a big dent in transportation emissions. Passenger and heavy-duty vehicles together account for more than 35% of the state’s climate pollution, which has proven an especially tricky share to reduce in a sprawling state of car loving-residents (indeed, California’s vehicle emissions have been ticking up).

But Newsom’s executive order only goes so far. It doesn’t address planes, trains, or ships, and it could take another couple decades for residents to stop driving all the gas-powered vehicles already on the road.

Whether the rules go into effect at all, and to what degree, will depend on many variables, including what legal grounds the Air Resources Board uses to justify the policies, says Danny Cullenward, a lecturer at Stanford’s law school focused on environmental policy.

One likely route is for the board to base the new regulations on tailpipe emissions standards, which California has used in the past to force automakers to produce more fuel-efficient vehicles, and nudge national standards forward. But that approach may require obtaining a new waiver from the Environmental Protection Agency allowing the state to exceed the federal government’s vehicle emissions rules under the Clean Air Act, the source of an already heated battle between the state and the Trump administration.

Last year, Trump announced he would revoke California’s earlier waiver to set tighter standards, prompting the state and New York to sue. So whether California can pursue this route could depend on how courts view the issue and who is sitting in the White House come late January.

It’s very likely that the automotive industry will challenge the rules no matter how the state goes about drafting them. And the outcome of those cases could depend on which court it lands in—and, perhaps eventually, who is sitting on the Supreme Court.

But whatever legal hurdles it may face, California and other states need to rapidly cut auto emissions to have any hope of combating the rising threat of climate change, says Dave Weiskopf, senior policy advisor with NextGen Policy in Sacramento.

“This is what science requires and it’s the next logical step for state policy,” he says.

What's new with NES and SNES Nintendo Switch Online?

September 23, 2020: Play more Mario and Donkey Kong

This month, Nintendo Switch Online adds the SNES platformer Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest. Players will try to rescue Donkey Kong from the clutches of Kaptain K. Rool with the help of Dixie Kong and plenty of animal friends while also exploring hidden areas to search for collectibles.

The other new additions are the SNES puzzle game Mario's Super Picross and beat-'em-up The Peace Keepers, and NES sci-fi shoot-'em-up S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team. The service now has a total of 90 titles.

July 15, 2020: Take a trip to Donkey Kong Country

The classic SNES platformer Donkey Kong Country hit the Nintendo Switch Online service this month along with two other titles, bringing the service's collection to 85 games. Play solo, competitively, or cooperatively controlling Donkey or Diddy Kong as you explore more than 100 levels filled with collectibles and secrets.

Also new for July is the dungeon-delving isometric action NES RPG The Immortal. The SNES list now includes Natsume Championship Wrestling, which lets you play one of 12 fighters and learn more than 50 moves as you fight other players or the AI.

May 14, 2020: Panel de Pon is finally available outside of Japan

For May, the Nintendo Switch Online service is adding a total of four games to the NES and SNES libraries. Rygar on NES, with Wild Guns, Operation Logic Bomb, and Panel de Pon on SNES.

Panel de Pon is a particularly unique addition because this game was originally never released outside of Japan. Gunpei Yokoi initially designed this classic SNES puzzle game. Still, outside of Japan, it was simply called Tetris Attack, and the anime art style was replaced with Nintendo characters from Yoshi's Island. So while it was technically released outside Japan in some form, it wasn't the original game. So for many, this new addition will be the first time to experience the true Panel de Pon.

Rygar is a mythical action game from Tecmo, Wild Guns is a western shooter from Natsume, and Operation Logic Bomb is an overhead shooter from Jaleco.

All of these games will be available on May 20, 2020.

Feb 19, 2020: Pop'n TwinBee and Smash Tennis are finally available in the U.S.

There are a total of four new games arriving in the NES and SNES app for active Nintendo Switch Online members. The games are: Shadow of the Ninja (NES), Eliminator Boat Duel (NES), Pop'n TwinBee (SNES), and Smash Tennis (SNES). Pop'n TwinBee and Smash Tennis have never been released in North America until now.

Pop'n TwinBee is a vertical scrolling top-down shooter from Konami that was initially released in 1993 in Japan and PAL regions, but never once made its way to the United States. Smash Tennis, also known as Super Family Tennis in Japan, is made by Namco and came out in 1993. The name became Smash Tennis when it was released in Europe in 1994.

September 10, 2019: SNES games join the service!

Nintendo announced in a Direct last week that Nintendo Switch Online would now feature SNES games as well as NES games, revealing a whopping 20 titles to join the service in the initial wave, with more to come in the future.

May 12, 2019: More classic games on the way

Three additional games will be added to the queue, including Donkey Kong Jr., VS. Excitebike, and Clu Clu Land. Each of these classics is a welcome addition to Nintendo Switch Online's ever-expanding collection.

March 13, 2019: New titles have arrived in the ever-expanding NES library for Nintendo Switch Online users

So far this year, Nintendo has gifted us with plenty of great new options in the NES library for NSO. We received Blaster Master and Zelda II: The Adventure of Link in January and February brought us Kirby's Adventure and Super Mario Bros. 2. There have also been plenty of "Special Edition" versions of the existing games, which have you start at later points in the game, or give you all the password-locked bonuses from the get-go. We haven't gotten word of the March additions to the NES library, but we're sure that we'll hear more about that soon.

November 7, 2018: New titles coming to the NES library!

Nintendo has given NES fans with Nintendo Switch Online something to look forward to. On November 14 there will be three new titles joining the NES library. Those who love the Metroidvania genre will be happy to get their mitts on the original with the release of Metroid. If you want some super fun retro platforming, you can look forward to Mighty Bomb Jack, and those who find joy in sidescrolling shooters will be happy to see the addition of TwinBee. I am incredibly happy to see that Nintendo is going to continue to build this library of retro classics.

With a deep and fantastic library like Nintendo's, it is a joy to find that they are no longer content to let great titles languish as they have for so many years. So many young people have never gotten an opportunity to play some of the games that made Nintendo the behemoth that it is.

Hopefully, we will see this library of awesome old games expand, so gamers will not have to turn to eBay or emulators to play the titles they want to revisit.

What games would you like to see added to the online service library?

Do you have a favorite NES or SNES game you'd like to see added to this list? What sparks your nostalgia. Add your favorite games in the comments below.

September 2020: Added information about Donkey Kong Country 2: Diddy's Kong Quest, Mario's Super Picross, The Peace Keepers, and S.C.A.T.: Special Cybernetic Attack Team.

Microsoft is testing a Skype Meet Now button in the Windows 10 taskbar

Skype Meet Now was Microsoft's reaction to Zoom just as the pandemic was taking hold: a quick invitation to a video call, no app needed. Now Microsoft is making Skype Meet Now even simpler, by adding it to Windows 10's taskbar.

Well, sort of. Meet Now is the flagship feature of Windows 10 Insider build 20221, part of the Dev Channel of Microsoft's Insider builds. This means it's part of Microsoft's code base that may never see the light of day, or may emerge in a future build. In any event. Microsoft is rolling the new feature to just a subset of the Dev Channel for now, paring down its audience further.

Nvidia reveals what to expect from its $1,499 RTX 3090, on sale tomorrow

Nvidia’s RTX 3080 graphics card seemed to be the 4K gaming champ we’d been waiting for at $699 — except most of us are still waiting a week after launch. The card was practically impossible to buy, Nvidia made a lot of mistakes and had to fight off bots, and scalpers wound up selling them for thousands on eBay.

Tomorrow, the beefier $1,499 RTX 3090 goes on sale, but it’s probably not a solution for any of those problems. It’s really designed for 8K gaming and giant creative projects, with its primary spec boost being a tremendous 24GB of GDDR6X RAM, and Nvidia has revealed today it’s only 10-15 percent faster for 4K gaming than the far more affordable RTX 3080.

(Genuine question: do you have an 8K screen? OK, carry on.)

Aesthetic iOS 14 Home screens highlight current customization limitations

Thanks to iOS 14, you can now customize your Home screen as you see fit.

Apple released iOS 14 to the masses just a little over a week ago, which is full of many great new features, but it has unleashed a whole new beast with iOS 14 Home screen customization. Even the average person, who is not always in tune with the tech world, has a growing interest in updating their iPhone to iOS 14 because they want to make it "aesthetic AF."

In fact, Pinterest broke its daily download record because people want inspiration for iOS 14 Home screen aesthetics, and others are getting rich quick by making and selling icon sets for iOS 14. And this has all happened in just one week (as of this writing).

Thanks to iOS 14, Apple certainly has given users much more freedom in terms of customizing their devices, much like how Android has been doing for years. However, the current implementation also highlights the limitations, making the entire experience a tarnished one that I honestly don't really care for.

iOS 14 reinvents the Home Screen

Back when Apple showed off iOS 14 at WWDC 2020, I was ecstatic for the Home screen changes. For years, I kept pretty much the same Home screen, with maybe a few changes on what apps showed up on my first page from time to time. But I was excited to finally be able to have widgets on the Home screen, like Android has had for years, while also eliminating a handful of pages with random apps thanks to the App Library.

Now that iOS 14 is out, I've changed up my iPhone workflow drastically by getting rid of a few apps, hiding all app pages beyond the first page and using just the App Library, and putting a few widgets on my Home screen. My page one has a medium Smart Stack, the small Fitness widget, and my most-used apps. On the second page, I simply have a large Apollo widget for my Home feed and a medium Siri App Suggestion widget.

I made these changes because, for me, it just works. I wanted widgets because it gives me information at a glance, and honestly, it spices up the Home screen enough for me. And if I want to get to an app, it's just a tap away, and boom — I'm in the app.

The new trend of iOS 14 Home screen aesthetics is something I never expected to see, truth be told. I just don't have the time to think about what "a e s t h e t i c" I want my iPhone to have, aside from the wallpaper. Once I have settled on a theme, I need to go download some widget making apps and tinker around with them to get the right information, color, font, and maybe a background image while I'm at it. Oh, and don't forget some inspirational quotes and other things, which may end up just cluttering your phone — the sky's the limit here. And make sure you have the right set of custom app icons to go with your personalized widgets.

While I have seen some cool iOS 14 Home screen "lewks," I have also seen some...uh, rather unpleasant ones (to me, anyway, as this is all subjective) as well. Honestly, this whole fad of customizing themes is just not for me — I like Apple for the simplicity, and if I wanted to customize to this extent, I would have just used an Android phone. But hey, whatever floats your boat — if you enjoy the customization options in its current state, by all means, go for it! But it also shows the crippling limitations that Apple needs to improve on.

The limitations of customizing an iOS 14 Home screen

Really, it's great to see more customization options for iOS users. It further closes the gap between iOS and Android, and that's always a good thing. But there are also some significant crutches to how iOS deals with customization.

First of all, widgets — they merely display information for quick glances, but there is no interaction with them. Why? The widgets from previous iOS versions, where you could only have them in the "Today View," allowed for some interaction. Right now, widgets offer no interaction, so if you need to do more than just look at them, it just launches the app. Yeah, sure, this static element works great for those "kewl aesthetic lewks," but if you wanted widgets to have a practical purpose, they fall short.

And the one that annoys me the most is how one is supposed to get custom app icons. You need to use scripting in the Shortcuts app for every single individual app that you want to change the icon for. Yes — Every. Single. App.

I really don't have time for all that, you guys. But make sure you have that perfect set of icons first. And since these icons are done through Shortcuts, that means two things: you can no longer have the notification badge icon on them, and Shortcuts has to open up before you get to your selected app. It may only be a few seconds, but it definitely slows down the workflow since it's an extra step. An extra step just for the "lewk."

Yes, those custom iOS 14 Home screens can really look awesome, but Apple's limitations on widgets and custom app icons taint the experience. Personally, I just don't find customization worth the hassle right now.

A step in the right direction for custom Apple Watch faces?

Even though it's not for me, it's great to see what people can come up with. Some of the themes I've seen are cool, and I do love good icon sets — I just don't have the patience for it myself. Plus, with this boom of customized Home screens, perhaps Apple can see that customization is something many folks want, and make improvements on in the future. Like really, is it so much to ask for a way to upload a custom icon into the settings or something?

One thing that I hope comes sooner rather than later is the ability to customize Apple Watch faces. I would much rather have the ability to customize my Apple Watch rather than my iPhone Home screen, and I've seen some cool faces that people have created to resemble things like Star Trek communicators, and just display things like programming code. It took 14 iterations of iOS for customizable Home screens without jailbreaking, so maybe custom watch faces are a few years off — shrug.

Do you care about your iOS 14 Home screen aesthetic?

What do you think about the "aesthetic AF" iOS 14 Home screen trend? Did you customize your Home screen to look super cool? Share them in the comments!

Achieve "aesthetic AF" Home screen bliss with these widget-making apps

These apps help you make those "aesthetic AF" widgets.

With iOS 14, Apple gave us many improvements: widgets on the Home screen, the App Library, automations in shortcuts, and so much more. But one iOS 14 seems to have taken off more than the rest, and that is widgets on iPhone. Since you can now have widgets on your Home screen (at least on the iPhone, sorry iPad users), a few developers have created widget making apps that let users create their own custom widgets, which can be paired perfectly with custom Home page icons. All of this, when combined, can make your iPhone Home screen "aesthetic AF," according to the latestTikTok viral trend (I'm too old for this).

Here are some of the best widget maker apps out there, so you can get widgets on your iPhone just as you want them!

Widgetsmith

Widgetsmith is made by David Smith, the same developer behind other apps like Watchsmith, Sleep++, and Pedometer++. Widgetsmith also appears to be the first widget-making app that went viral on TikTok, as TikToker katamogz talked about Widgetsmith making your iOS 14 "aesthetic AF,"setting off the trend of highly customized home screens.

In Widgetsmith, you start with three different sized widgets, which you can customize to your liking. Customizations include functions like date, time, weather, astronomy, and more. Every single function can be fine-tuned for your desired functionality and appearance. All of the widgets that you create in Widgetsmith can be dynamically scheduled to appear on your Home screen based on rules that you define. For example, you could have a weather widget show up in the morning when you wake up, then a calendar as your work day begins, and then switch to your Activity rings when work ends and you want to get some exercise in.

There are a ton of tools in Widgetsmith that are there to help you create the perfect widgets on your iPhone Home screen. The interface is not the prettiest, but the possibilities are endless with Widgetsmith.

Widgetsmith

Free with in-app purchases

Widgetsmith offers a ton of tools to help you create the most aesthetic Home screen widgets ever.

Color Widgets

The problem with Widgetsmith is that it doesn't have the most user-friendly interface when it comes to creating widgets. If you want something that's easier to work with, then Color Widgets could be better suited for you.

Color Widgets has many different premade widget designs that are stylish and colorful, but you can still make your own if that's what you want. Even the premade widget designs can be personally customized to your liking since you can change fonts, theme colors, and even the background color. Your widgets can be up and running on your Home screen in seconds.

Color Widgets

Free with in-app purchases

Choose from hundreds of premade widgets or customize your own, then get them on your Home screen in seconds.

Widgeridoo

If you want to go for practical information in your widgets on iPhone, rather than just some style, then Widgeridoo could be what you need. With Widgeridoo, you have the freedom to combine different blocks of information into a single widget where you can also choose the size of each block. Widgeridoo can display the following bits of data: calendar events, birthdays, text and images, dates and countdowns, Health data, websites via JSON, battery percentage, and more. You can also change things like colors for your blocks if you want to add some stylish flair.

Widgeridoo is free to download, but you will need to upgrade if you want all of the features.

OneWidget

OneWidget is the latest contender in the widget making app space, but this one certainly looks promising. You'll find a wide variety of well-designed widget templates in OneWidget, and you can customize them as you see fit. Functions that can be in OneWidget widgets include clock, date, system information, reminders and todos, desktop calendar or agendas, life counters, and more. Your widgets can have up to four functions in one, and everything about them can be customized, including colors and style. And if you're unsure of what the widget will look like on your Home screen, you can preview it in the app before committing.
