Yesterday 9to5Mac posted details of several new features it found in supposed unreleased iOS 14 code, and now MacRumors is adding to the deluge of leaks in a series of posts. It’s not clear that every one of these features pertains to iOS 14 specifically, but they do all sound like the sort of thing that could accompany a major software upgrade from Apple.

First up is a new fitness app codenamed “Seymour” and possibly to be called Fit or Fitness in its shipping form. It’s said to be a standalone app targeting iOS 14, watchOS 7, and tvOS 14, rather than a replacement for the current Activity app. The new app reportedly lets you download fitness videos with different workouts and activities that you can perform as the Apple Watch tracks...

Sensor Tower secretly harvested user data with VPN and ad blocking apps

Sensor Tower, a technology analytics firm, has been harvesting data from millions of users across iOS and Android through VPN and ad-blocking apps that the company secretly owns, according to a new report by Buzzfeed News.

Since 2015, Sensor Tower has developed over twenty apps for iOS and Android that has been downloaded over 35 million times. Once installed, the apps ask for a root certificate which gives the company access to all data and traffic going through that device. Armando Orozco, an Android analyst for Malwarebytes, says that giving root access to an app exposes the user to much more risk than they typically realize.

"Your typical user is going to go through this and think, Oh, I'm blocking ads, and not really be aware of how invasive this could be."

Randy Nelson, Sensor Tower's head of mobile insights, says that the company hid the fact that they owned the apps for competitive reasons, and that most of the apps being accused of data harvesting are now either "defunct" or "in the process of sunsetting".

"When you consider the relationship between these types of apps and an analytics company, it makes a lot of sense — especially considering our history as a startup ... The vast majority of these apps listed are now defunct (inactive) and a few are in the process of sunsetting ... We take the app stores' guidelines very seriously and make a concerted effort to comply with them, along with any changes to these rules that occur from time to time."

According to an Apple spokesperson, a dozen of the apps owned by Sensor Tower was previously removed from the iOS App Store due to violations. The company is continuing to investigate the apps from Sensor Tower that remain active on the Appt Store.

Apple gives retail employees with coronavirus symptoms unlimited sick leave

Apple continues to take measures to protect employees and customers from coronavirus.

Last week, Apple announced that it was allowing employees of its corporate campus to work from home as an added precaution against the spread of coronavirus. Now, it appears that the company is also giving unlimited sick leave to employees to show symptoms of COVID-19.

Reported by 9to5Mac, Apple has informed hourly and retail employees that, if they begin to exhibit symptoms of coronavirus, they will be granted unlimited sick leave by the company.

Employees who need to make use of this new policy do not have to provide a doctor's note, according to 9to5Mac. This means that if an employee experiences COVID-19 symptoms they can stay home without the need to use sick days or provide documentation to management.

As of now, Apple retail stores are staying open during the outbreak. The company is, however, limiting Genius Bar appointments and reducing or canceling its Today at Apple sessions in an effort to reduce the number of customers in its stores at a time.

Over the weekend, Tim Cook sent a memo recommending that employees working at offices in California, Seattle, South Korea, Japan, Italy, Germany, France, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom work remotely if their "job allows" for it. Unlimited sick leave for hourly employees is just the latest measure that the company has taken to protect its employees and customers.
