Mondo and the lost art of the movie poster
Looking through the posters at your local movie theater, it’s easy to forget that the medium hasn’t always been the domain of Photoshop and graphic design. Movies like Star Wars and Raiders of the Lost Ark were once the gold standard, artists like Drew Struzan capturing the essence of a film in a beautifully composed painting. That’s mostly been replaced by posters consisting of the bare essentials: the photographed faces of the actors the studio wants you to see, the branded title, and...

OneNote for Mac coming this month as Microsoft eyes Evernote
Microsoft is planning to release a OneNote for Mac app later this month. Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell The Verge that the Mac application is part of a broader effort to expand the features and functionality of OneNote. While Microsoft originally released OneNote more than 10 years ago, the company has largely limited its note-taking app to Windows. Versions for iOS, Android, and the web have debuted in recent years, but the full desktop version has always been a paid app available for Office on Windows. That’s about to change too.
We understand that Microsoft will release the OneNote for Mac app for free, and the company is also planning to make the Windows desktop version available at no extra cost. This marks a...

‘Need for Speed’ review: not so fast, not so furious
As the lights go down in the theater, an “EA” logo flashes across the screen, which prompts a few errant chuckles from the moviegoers around me. I laugh too, and I’m not exactly sure why. Maybe it’s that it looks like a video game is booting up, or maybe we just all know movies adapted from video games are at a high risk of being absolutely terrible. Super Mario Bros. Street Fighter. Mortal Kombat. Doom. I could keep going.
This one is Need for Speed, a movie based on EA’s...

The studio behind 'Rolando' is back with a fantastic-looking new mobile game
Released in 2008, Rolando was arguably the first game to truly show the potential of the iPhone as a gaming platform — and now developer Handcircus is making a return to the platform with an intriguing new release. Called Seabeard, the game is described as a mobile take on Animal Crossing, but with a dash of Wind Waker style. It looks to be very different from the puzzle-heavy Rolando, instead presenting players with a large open world to explore and lots of quests to undertake.
)
Handcircus is partnering with Dragonvale developer Backflip Studios to publish the game, which is slated to launch sometime this summer for unannounced mobile platforms. The arrangement appears similar to the Rovio Stars program, which has the Angry Birds...

Rdio ditches music recommendation service after Spotify acquisition
Rdio plans to stop using The Echo Nest music recommendation service after Spotify, a fierce music streaming competitor, acquired the company last week. Speaking to CNBC , Rdio CEO Anthony Bay says the company has other sources of data and partners that can help fill the gap for its music recommendation features. "As far as we are concerned, they were a good partner, but we have other good partners and we'll move on,” says Bay. “So we will stop using that source of data and use other sources."
The move isn’t exactly surprising. Spotify’s acquisition of The Echo Nest allows it to control the main music recommendation service that its competitors have utilized in their music streaming services. While the name might not be familiar,...

PonoMusic promises audiophile-pleasing portable digital music
Influential musician Neil Young says that in the pursuit of the convenience offered by wireless streaming, or storing large catalogs of songs on pocket-sized devices, we have sacrificed the quality of the music, and by extension our overall listening experience. But a belief that the two need not be mutually exclusive has led Young to conceive a system called PonoMusic, which he believes will afford digital music listeners the ease and accessibility of today and the audio quality of yesteryear. ..
