Uni allows deaf and hearing to communicate naturally
People who are deaf or hard of hearing are constantly met with the challenge of communicating, since most non-deaf people don't understand sign language. But modern technology is once again offering new solutions for old issues, and this time it comes in the shape of Uni, which uses motion gesture recognition to translate sign language to audio, and spoken word to text, in real time. .. zero2infinity mixes balloons and rockets to launch nanosats
Reaching space in a balloon may sound like something out of a children’s book, but Spain’s zero2infinity company doesn't think so. The Barcelona-based company specializes in near-space balloon flights for scientific and engineering clients, and is working on a nanosatellite launch vehicle called bloostar, which uses a high-altitude balloon as a first stage and rockets for reaching orbit... New software claimed to provide more accurate EV range estimates
If there's one thing that keeps people from buying electric cars, it's range anxiety – what if your battery runs out before you reach your destination? Although most EVs do feature systems that estimate range, they can't always be relied upon. A new software system, however, is said to be accurate to within two miles. .. The Division Furtive Type 50 shines light on tired timepieces
To the timepiece layman such as myself, most wristwatches are bland, uninspiring tools that do one job. They do that one job extremely well, of course, but they all – with the exception of innovative watches from companies such as TokyoFlash – meld into one inglorious whole. They do exactly the same thing, and do it in exactly the same way. Which all conspires to make it very easy for the Division Furtive Type 50 to stand out from the crowd. .. Radical 4-in-1 piston engine promises hybrid-like efficiency
One of the many challenges facing engine designers is the need to increase power output while simultaneously retaining or improving efficiency. Although a four-cylinder engine is still an engineering marvel, there remain many friction points that reduce energy output. Namikoshi Electronics of Japan believes its unorthodox 4-in-1 concept engine could provide an alternative powerplant to the automobile industry. .. Finished Visio.M electric concept car revealed to public
Three years ago, we first heard about the Mute electric concept car. Created via a collaboration between 20 departments at the Technische Universitaet Muenchen (TUM), it was designed chiefly to be efficient, inexpensive and safe. A project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research followed, in which a consortium of over a dozen companies (including TUM, Daimler and BMW) set about designing a Mute-based city car known as the Visio.M. That two-seater car is now complete, and is being revealed to the public for the first time this week. .. Continue Reading Finished Visio.M electric concept car revealed to public

Alpine Hawk keeps alarm-equipped "eyes" on skis and snowboards
It's a dilemma that most every skier or snowboarder has faced: leave your ride unattended outside the lodge and risk walking out to an empty space where it used to be, skip lunch/après ski drinks, or obsessively look out the window to make sure you don't become a theft victim. You could use one of those compact cable locks, but that's one extra thing in your pocket and a thin cable isn't all that secure, anyway. The AlpineHawk, the first product from Norwegian company AlpineTec, provides a fourth option: an electronic anti-theft system that sounds an alarm and sends you a smartphone alert if someone tries to make off with your equipment. .. Cheap, ultra low-power light source runs on just 0.1 Watts
Researchers at Tohoku University in Japan have developed a new low-cost flat panel light source that could pioneer a new generation of brighter, cheaper and greener lighting devices to rival LEDs. The device uses arrays of highly conductive carbon nanotubes to deliver evenly-distributed illumination with high efficiency and a power consumption as low as 0.1 Watts – about 100 times lower than that of light-emitting diodes. .. Xenex updates protocols for germ-zapping robots in response to Ebola threat
Dealing with highly infectious diseases like Ebola is often like a logic problem. Disinfecting rooms is hard enough, but what about protective suits? True, they greatly reduce the chances of infection, but getting them off can bring the risk straight back again if the suit isn't decontaminated first. Xenex has created protocols that conform to those of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) for its a line of robots that use UV lamps that to decontaminate hospital rooms and protective clothing exposed to the Ebola virus...
