Apple opens new stores in Japan and Mexico City

One has a bamboo garden...

What you need to know

  • Apple has opened two new retail stores.
  • Apple Antara is a brand new store in Mexico city.
  • Fukuoka store gets rebuild 150 meters away from the previous store.

Apple has this weekend open the door at two of its brand new retail stores across the globe. In Mexico City, Apple Antara was opened in the Polanco disctric of Mexico city. The store opened at 5 p.m. Friday, and features monumental 23-foot tall sliding glass doors. In a statement prior to opening Apple said:

Apple Antara is the first Apple Store of its kind in Latin America, and features a pavilion design. Taking full advantage of Mexico City's mild climate, the large sliding doors open to create a 20-foot-wide entrance to welcome visitors in from the public plaza outside. A thin profile metal roof hovers above limestone-clad walls and curved corner glass panels to create a bright great hall. The interior trees blur the boundary between inside and out, where the community can gather on stone benches in the plaza along Boulevard Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra.

Meanwhile in Japan, Apple opened the newly rebuilt Fukuoka store, in the city that shares its name on the Northern shore of Japan's Kyushu island. The store has been rebuilt 150 meters away from the previous store, and it features some classic Japanese interior design influences. Fukuoka is the first store in the world to feature a Shoji screen (translucent paper stretched over timber), which bathes the store in natural light. The new Fukuoka store also features a superb bamboo garden.

Both stores will no doubt prove to become fantastic community hubs centred around Apple's product range, but also some of the incredible social events that Apple likes to to host in its stores. Antara's launch was accompanied by a Today at Apple Session with Mexican illustrator and muralist Edgar Flores and a performance by Girl Ultra.

A little latin flavor for Miami.

This week the NFL announced who will be the Super Bowl performer this year. In a surprise, it revealed that not one, but two artists will headline the marquee event: Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. And in honor of that, Apple Music shared a couple playlists that will get you caught up with their careers before the two rock the Super Bowl halftime show.

Super Bowl LIV is taking place February 2, 2020 at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. With that as the backdrop, the NFL chose two iconic latin artists that have reached the pinnacle of the music industry.

Both Jennifer Lopez and Shakira have careers that span over two decades. They are proper representations of the latin community.

Shortly after the announcement was made, Apple Music shared the Essential playlist for Jennifer Lopez and Shakira. They are rundowns of the countless hits each has had and might perform during the Super Bowl. J. Lo's playlist includes hits like "Jenny From the Block," "Love Don't Cost a Thing," and "Waiting For Tonight." Shakira's playlist includes hits like "Hips Don't Lie," "Whenever, Whenever," and "La Bicicleta."

You can listen to each playlist now on Apple Music.

In The Irishman, Martin Scorsese finally takes the glamour out of gangsters

Photo: Netflix

At the press conference following the New York Film Festival press screening of the Netflix-produced feature The Irishman, director Martin Scorsese discussed the project’s long gestation, noting that he and star Robert De Niro had wanted to work together again “since Casino.” It sounded odd to hear it put that way, because before Casino, De Niro and Scorsese had one of the most prolific collaborations in American movies — to the point where during Casino’s 1995 release, critics largely received it as an old-hat retread of Goodfellas. Now it’s 2019, Casino has a better reputation, and De Niro and Scorsese haven’t made a feature together in decades.

That kind of time-passing blink is at the heart of The Irishman, even if its...
