Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2 doesn’t have a release date, but you can already watch this review

Samsung finally announced the follow-up to the beleaguered first generation Galaxy Fold, the Galaxy Z Fold 2, earlier this month, but the phone still isn’t out yet — Samsung promised to reveal more on September 1st. Ahead of then, though, it seems at least one Z Fold 2 has made it into the wild, as a Chinese YouTube channel has already posted a review of the upcoming foldable (via SamMobile).

I don’t speak Chinese, so I can’t tell you what the reviewer is saying. But if you want to see what an actual powered-on Z Fold 2 looks like doing a bunch of different things, I recommend watching the whole video. And there’s a few interesting tidbits worth calling out.

iFixit’s teardown for the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra could explain why your phone is running hot

Tech teardown specialist iFixit has published a new article taking apart the Samsung Galaxy Note 20 and Note 20 Ultra, providing us a better look at what’s underneath the giant camera bump of Samsung’s $1,300 stylus-equipped smartphone and its cheaper sibling. Surprisingly, iFixit found that both phones are missing the vapor chamber and copper heat pipes Samsung had been using on previous phones to cool their processor during extended gaming sessions.

Apple has reportedly acquired virtual reality startup company Spaces

Apple adds another VR acquisition to its portfolio.

Reported by Protocol, Apple has required Spaces, a virtual reality startup that recently had been heading towards bankruptcy. The company reportedly started as a Dreamworks Animation project but eventually pivoted to to games like "Terminator Salvation: Fight for the Future."

Spaces spun out of DreamWorks Animation in early 2016, and developed a range of location-based VR experiences, including "Terminator Salvation: Fight for the Future." The company had to shut down its VR centers at the beginning of the pandemic, laying off some staffers in the process, and took a small PPP loan to keep the lights on. "COVID-19 felt like a tsunami for us," Spaces CEO Shioraz Akmal told Protocol at the time.

After its foray into games, the company then built a VR experience for Zoom that would allow users to attend meetings as an animated avatar.

Spaces then pivoted to build a VR add-on to traditional video conferencing solutions like Zoom, allowing Zoom users to take part in meetings with an animated avatar. "We like to keep busy making things," Akmal said back then. "We can't sit around waiting a year for something to return."

Spaces had announced that it would be shutting down its services last week and that the company was "heading in a new direction." The direction, according to the report, seems to be pointed straight towards Cupertino.

This news is the latest in a line of VR acquisitions for the company. Apple had recently confirmed it has acquired NextVR, a live streaming AR/VR company. It is unclear if, as part of the acquisition, employees from Spaces will be hired to work at Apple or if the acquisition will focus more on the technology that the company holds. Apple and Spaces have both declined to comment about the potential acquisition.

iPhone 12 Pro with a 120Hz ProMotion display is unlikely unless delayed

The fate of the iPhone 12 Pro with its 120Hz display might rest with one troublesome component.

Reported by MacRumors, Apple may have to delay the launch of the iPhone 12 Pro in order to ship it with the 120Hz ProMotion panel that many are hoping it to feature.

Ross Young, who has reported on past supply chain issues with Apple, says that he is hearing that Apple is having trouble acquiring the drivers necessary to power the 120Hz panels it wants to use with the iPhone 12 Pro. He believes that rather than wait for the drivers to become available, Apple will ship the iPhone with a 60Hz panel instead.

Apple leaker Jon Prosser, however, told his community on Sunday to not "give up on 120hz on 12 Pro yet."

In a video posted to his YouTube channel, Front Page Tech, Prosser said that Apple is still debating and testing the ProMotion display on the iPhone 12 Pro, but that it is working.

"Behind the scenes, Apple is still testing 120Hz, ProMotion, for iPhone 12 Pro. Specifically, at least, in this case with my sources, the 12 Pro Max ... 120Hz is working just fine, with a manual toggle in settings on the iPhone 12 Pro Max."

In its Q3 earnings call, Apple confirmed that the launch of the iPhone 12 would be delayed. It appears that the ProMotion display could be a big part of the reasons why.
