Update for Apple Music on Android brings all of iOS 14's best features

Apple Music on Android has received a huge update.

What you need to know

  • Apple Music has been updated for Android.
  • It brings the app experience in line with Apple devices running iOS 14.
  • New features include updated search, a new Now Playing experience, and social sharing.

Reported by 9to5Google, version 3.4 of Apple Music on Android has been released, bringing a number of enhancements to the app that rolled out to Apple devices with the release of iOS 14.

Per the update section on the Google Play Store:

This update includes Listen Now - an all-new home for Apple Music, an all-new search experience, an enhanced playback experience featuring Autoplay, Crossfade, sharing to Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat Stories, and improved app performance.

In addition to a redesign, the menu has been updated as well. The "For You" tab has been updated to "Listen Now," and search has been added to the menu.

With the update comes a redesign of the app, as originally outlined by Android Police, expanding out to five primary sections in the menu bar. Specifically, "For You" has been replaced with a similar, yet different "Listen Now" view, and the app's search features have moved from an upper search bar down to the menu bar.

The Now Playing view has also been redesigned, displaying a dynamic background that will change color to match the album that is currently playing.

The Now Playing view has also been given a redesign, with a dynamic background that adjusts its colors to match the current song's album cover. Open up the queue list to see another new feature of Apple Music 3.4, a new infinity-shaped icon on the right-hand side of "Playing Next." With a tap of this button, autoplay will be enabled and show a preview of what automatically added songs will play next.

One of the most requested features for Apple Music was to allow sharing to popular social platforms like Instagram Stories, and the latest update adds that as well.

From any Apple Music song, album, or playlist, whether in Search or in your Now Playing queue, you'll have the option to "Share" that bit of music, including direct to Instagram, Facebook, or Snapchat as a tappable sticker in your story. Selecting a different app simply shares a link to your selected album or track.

You can download Apple Music for Android for free on the Google Play Store. To have full access to the app, Apple Music requires a $9.99 per month subscription.

Apple temporarily closes its Philadelphia store in response to protests

Apple Walnut Street is closed, temporarily.

What you need to know

  • Apple Walnut Street in Philadelphia is temporarily closed.
  • The store was closed in response to tensions between police and protestors.
  • It is unclear when the store will reopen.

Reported by Michael Steeber from 9to5Mac, Apple has temporarily closed its location at Walnut Street in Philadelphia. According to Steeber, the location has been closed, not in response to a COVID-19 concern, but out of precaution from the tension between protestors and police in the city.

"Apple Walnut Street is closed — this isn't due to COVID, but precautionary because of the tension in Philadelphia. The store hasn't even been fully repaired from summer's damage."

The tension between protestors and police in Philadelphia occurred after the fatal police shooting of Walter Wallace Jr. According to a report from CBS, the police reported that 81 people were arrested on Tuesday night alone. Other stores in the city have also closed as a precautionary measure against damage and looting.

If you visit the Apple Walnut Street page on Apple's website, you'll notice that it is currently listed as "temporarily closed." Steeber notes that the location, as of its closing, was still undergoing repairs from damage it sustained over the summer during the George Floyd protests.

Most of Apple's retail locations are now open in the United States, but some still remain closed due to COVID-19 precautions. Others, though open, require appointments or are operating under an "Express" format where customers can purchase products at a window.

Apple may finally offer the iPhone in a 1TB storage configuration

Those who have wanted a 1TB iPhone rejoice...maybe.

What you need to know

  • Apple may finally offer the iPhone in a 1TB configuration.
  • Apple leaker Jon Prosser posted about the possibility on Twitter.
  • It is unclear if Apple will add the storage option to its existing lineup or wait until next year.

Reported by Apple leaker Jon Prosser, Apple is planning to bring 1TB of storage to the iPhone for the first time. Prosser posted a relatively simple and, as leaks usually go, vague tweet about the subject.

"hope y'all are ready for 1TB iphones."

Prosser did not offer details as to what iPhone would be the first to feature 1TB of storage. The leaker could mean that Apple may begin to offer its new iPhone 12 lineup in an additional 1TB configuration, but that is unlikely as Apple would probably have had that storage size ready for the phone's launch.

What is more likely is that Apple plans to offer its next lineup of iPhones in a 1TB configuration. The iPhone 12 is currently offered in 64GB, 128GB, and 256GB, whereas the iPhone 12 Pro is offered in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB. It is unclear if 1TB will be added as a fourth option or if it will replace one of the existing options.

Regardless, those who regularly max out the storage offering of their iPhones will be happy to hear of the news.

Developers invited to one-on-one labs to prepare for Apple Silicon Macs

Developers are invited to one-on-one labs for Apple Silicon.

What you need to know

  • Apple is sending out invites to developers about Apple Silicon.
  • The labs will give developers one-on-one code-level guidance to prepare their apps.
  • Requests for an appointment must be submitted by November 1.

Apple has been running its Universal Quick Start Program to help developers prepare for its transition from Intel chips to its own Apple Silicon, and today that program gets an upgrade. As reported by MacRumors, Apple is starting to send invitations to developers to offer one-on-one code-level guidance labs with Apple engineers. The timing makes a lot of sense, as Apple is expected to announce its first Apple Silicon Mac at an event on November 17.

Developers who signed up for the Quick Start Program received a Mac Mini fitted with an A12Z processor, the chip currently found in the iPad Pro. The invite says that appointments will be used to prepare a developer's iPhone, iPad, and Mac apps for Apple Silicon Macs.

Participants in the Quick Start Program, which provided developers with a loaner Mac mini equipped with an A12Z chip and resources for developing Apple Silicon apps, can now sign up for an appointment with an Apple engineer.

Appointment requests for the one-on-one guidance can be requested up until 5:00 PM Pacific Time on November 1, with appointments occurring between November 4 and 5.

When Apple announced that it would be transitioning the Mac from Intel to its own Apple Silicon, it said that it would be releasing the first Apple Silicon Mac by the end of 2020. Recent news also expects the company to release an Apple Silicon iMac in the first half of 2021.
