Ask any US wildlife official how the invasive Asian carp have managed to stick around US rivers for four decades, and they'll all say different versions of the same three things. First, the carp is a voracious eater that outcompetes other species for plankton, causing native US fish to die and allowing the carp to thrive. Second, the carp reproduces with incredible ease, so its populations have grown at tremendous speed. And third, the US doesn't possess any native species of fish large enough to prey on adult Asian carp, so they have very few predators. But a closer look at the four Asian carp species currently plaguing America's waters points to one glaring fact: we clearly don't know much about these fish.
BMW has turned the X3 and X5 into the X4 and X6, but the smaller X1 has been left out so far. That could change, as BMW is rumored to be working on an X2 coupe based on the next-generation X1.

If we can glean anything from Nintendo's 124-year history, it's a willingness to experiment. The company, which originally sold playing cards, has at various points owned a taxi company, TV network, and even a love hotel chain. It wasn't until 1966, after over 75 years in business, that Nintendo released its first toy. The Ultra Hand was designed by Gunpei Yokoi, who would go on to make both the Game & Watch and Game Boy systems.

It's easy for most people to tell others what they want, but it's actually a luxury that those with speech disorders don't have. The National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders estimates that 7.5 million people in the US have trouble using their voices, and now a program called VocaliD wants to help these individuals by having others donate their voices to make customized, synthetic ones that those with impairments can use.
The process starts with VocaliD's cofounder and speech scientist Rupal Patel and her group of specialists who listen to the sounds a patient can make to hear what their voice could sound like. Then they find a surrogate who is similar in age and sex to the patient, and that surrogate speaks and...
President Obama will meet with the chief executives of several major tech companies later today. Politico reports that the discussion will revolve around privacy and intelligence gathering — much like the first private roundtable Obama coordinated with Silicon Valley's leaders in December. In that instance, the meeting was originally supposed to focus on HealthCare.gov, but subsequent reports claimed that Obama's guests quickly steered the conversation to the NSA and government surveillance. This time it appears the President plans to tackle the delicate subject head on. The complete guest list hasn't yet been revealed by the White House, but it seems today's huddle may have been hastily arranged. It was only added to Obama's public...

Mt. Gox was once Bitcoin's biggest exchange. After first slipping in the ranks to several newcomers, the exchange shut down its website and announced that hundreds of millions of dollars worth of customers' bitcoins had been lost to a series of hackings that had gone unnoticed over several years. It's since filed for bankruptcy protection and began to search, with some success, for the missing currency. Customers are of course irate, and there's no indication that they'll be able to get back the money that they had stored with Mt. Gox.
Jimmy Fallon has been off to a strong start at The Tonight Show, delivering solid ratings for NBC and bringing in top notch celebrities from night to night. On Thursday, Fallon welcomed Billy Joel to the guest's chair. "You're one of my all time favorites, and even just to talk to you, I get a little nervous" Fallon confessed to the legendary songwriter. "But to sing with you is the craziest."
Fallon then kindly asked Joel to partake in a (mostly) a capella rendition of "The Lion Sleeps Tonight," turning to an iPad app to help loop their vocals. Fallon has demonstrated his musical chops numerous times in the past, and here again he manages to largely keep in step with an accomplished performer — though he does need Joel's help finding...
Young adult novels, and the movies they inspire, have all but taken over the notion of the futuristic sci-fi dystopia. Once the domain of Brazil and Blade Runner, the landscape has instead become home to sagas that use the background of an oppressive future to explore universal themes like the importance of individuality — with a love triangle or two thrown in for good measure. When the pieces come together just right, the result can be The Hunger Games , a series that reaches beyond younger...
