comiXology introduces new iPhone and iPad app after being acquired by Amazon

When comiXology announced they were being acquired by Amazon, many folks were wondering if any changes to how they use comiXology would come about. As it turns out, comiXology is making some changes to their iOS and Android apps with regards to the in-app purchase system and check out cart features.

For Android it's simple update of the app but for iOS, comiXology is retiring the old version for iPhone & iPad and users are required to download the new release that includes the update changes as noted on the company blog.

We have introduced a new comiXology iPhone and iPad Comics App and are retiring the old one. iPhone and iPad users will now buy comics on comixology.com and download to the app. All your purchased books will be readable in the new app once you've downloaded it and taken the following steps:

  • If you don't have a comiXology account, go to comiXology.com to create one, or create one in the original Comics app!

  • In the original Comics app, log into your comiXology account.

  • Sync your in-app purchases to your comiXology account by tapping the Restore button on the Purchases tab.

  • Download the new comiXology app. This will be your new home downloading and reading comics.

  • Start shopping on comiXology.com. New web purchases will appear in the "In Cloud" tab in our new app.

  • If you have comics downloaded in the old app, no problem! You can continue to read them there without re-downloading to the new app.

It seems as though comiXology does recognize how much of a hassle this is for folks though. They're proactively offering a $5 eGift Card credit to all those who have purchased through the comiXology platform in the past.

This credit will be automatically applied throughout the day to those accounts who are eligible and all of those eligible have 30 days to purchase books with that credit. That's not too bad but still, a hassle.

Comixology removes in-app purchases to avoid paying fees to Apple

It's about to get a bit more difficult to buy comic books from a mobile device. Comixology is replacing its iOS app today with a new version that removes the ability to purchase comics. The new app is solely a comic book reader, which means that you'll have to visit the company's website to purchase new comics. You can browse comics in the new app and download free comics directly, but paid comics can only be added to your wish list for later purchase online. As with the old app, previously purchased comics can be downloaded and synced directly from the app.

The change certainly isn't an improvement for iOS users, but it's clear why the change has been made: Apple's App Store policies demand that it receive a 30 percent cut of all...
