Using a drone to hunt animals will be illegal in Alaska

The Alaska Board of Game recently approved a measure that will make spotting animals and hunting them with a drone illegal in the state. The issue was first raised after a moose killing was assisted by drones in 2012, but there were no laws deeming the practice illegal at the time. The draft regulation will be sent to Alaska's Department of Law for review and could be made official by July 1st.

Journalism Is Not Content Production

Journalism is dead. Or so said everyone who told me never to pursue a career in news gathering. Given the news industry’s bleak statistics the past few decades, such fears have certainly been well-founded. Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes isn’t the protracted epic you might expect from Hideo Kojima’s philosophical, unhinged spy saga, which has been one of the most original and unpredictable fixtures in video games for decades. Instead, it serves not only as a first next-generation outing for the series, but also as a bite-sized prologue to the fifth entry proper, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. That game, which has no release date as of yet, is billed as a revolution for Metal Gear...

World's first 3D-printed kayak takes to the water

Jim Smith on the water in his 3D-printed kayak

It doesn't seem too long ago that 3D-printers were astounding us by churning out cheeky little trinkets or small replacement parts. But the technology has quickly grown to cater for everything from rapid prototyping to slick-looking commercial products, and a quick snack for astronauts to bizarre models of unborn babies. Jim Smith of Grass Roots Engineering has been designing and building his own home-based, large-scale 3D printer since 2008, and the latest modification recently spent over 40 days producing 28 colorful ABS plastic sections that were bolted together to create a 16.7 ft-long kayak...

Google releases new Chromecast photo collage app for iOS

Google has launched a playful new app for Chromecast that lets a group of people create and draw on a collage of photos displayed on a TV. The app is called Photowall, and though it requires an iOS device to get started right now, anyone with a smartphone or a tablet can join in once it's going. Once an iOS user launches Photowall, others will be able to visit a specific URL in Chrome to start adding their own photos to the collage and doodling on them. That app will record everything that happens too, and once everyone's done, it'll turn the entire stream into a YouTube video.

Deal with the devil: why Netflix broke its own rules on net neutrality

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings published an impassioned blog post last week criticizing internet service providers like Comcast and Verizon for asking his company to pay interconnection fees in order to ensure that their data reaches customers with speed and quality. "Some big ISPs are extracting a toll because they can — they effectively control access to millions of consumers." he wrote. This toll, says Hastings, violates Netflix’s definition of true and total net neutrality.

So why did Netflix agree, just one month earlier, to pay Comcast and violate its own stated principles? According to Hastings, "Netflix believes strong net neutrality is critical, but in the near term we will in cases pay the toll to the powerful ISPs to protect...
