Google is starting to reveal the secrets of its experimental Fuchsia OS

Android and Chrome chief Hiroshi Lockheimer speaking at a live recording of The Vergecast at Google I/O 2019 in Mountain View, California.

Google Fuchsia remains shrouded in mystery, but the company is slowly beginning to open up about the next-generation operating system, what its purpose is, and what devices it might power. At Google’s I/O developer conference this past week, Android and Chrome chief Hiroshi Lockheimer offered some rare insight into Fuchsia, albeit at a very high level, in front of public audiences.

What we do know about Fuchsia is that it’s an open source project, similar to AOSP, but could run all manner of devices, from smart home gadgets to laptops to phones. It’s also known to be built on an all-new, Google-built kernel called “zircon,” formerly known as “magenta,” and not the Linux kernel that forms the foundation of Android and Chrome OS.

Google’s Pixel 3A is refreshingly easy to repair

Ubisoft keeps pretending its political games don’t have politics in them

Today Ubisoft officially unveiled the latest Tom Clancy release, Ghost Recon: Breakpoint. A sequel to 2017’s Wildlands, it’s another realistic military shooter — and another chance for Ubisoft to say that its games are free of politics.

It’s become something of a trend for the French publisher, which makes big-budget action games that feature settings and storylines plucked from the headlines, yet stubbornly refuse to say much of substance despite this. Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot told The Guardian last year that, instead of making political statements, the company makes games where the goal “is to make people think.”

Here are just a few examples of the company’s insistence on staying away from politics — and just how ridiculous that can...

Philips Hue bulbs can now be grouped together in ‘zones’

Philips Hue has been updated today with a new feature that lets you group individual Hue lights and bulbs together as a group — called a “Zone” — making it easier to control larger light setups, via Android Police.

The update is available on iOS and Android starting today, and gives Hue the much-needed option to group multiple bulbs together. Hue lights could previously only control bulbs through the company’s app on an individual basis or for the entire room at once, but Zones will allow for both more granular control as well as for controlling groups of lights that are in different rooms.

Most importantly, it’ll make having light fixtures with multiple bulbs easier to control together — previously, the only way to do that was by using...

Jeff Bezos unveils mock-up of Blue Origin’s lunar lander Blue Moon

Today, Jeff Bezos unveiled the design of his spaceflight company’s lunar lander, the Blue Moon, which can take scientific payloads — and eventually humans — to the surface of the Moon. Bezos said that his company, Blue Origin, has been working on the design for the lander for the last three years.

“This is an incredible vehicle, and it’s going to the Moon,” Bezos said after unveiling a mock-up of the Blue Moon lander at the Washington, DC Convention Center. Members of the press and space industry were in attendance to watch the reveal. The event opened with a video from the original Apollo 11 mission, which landed the first astronauts on the surface of the Moon. “If that does not inspire you, you are at the wrong event,” Bezos said.

Ecobee may also have a new premium thermostat on the way

Yesterday, an Ecobee leak may have inadvertently revealed plans for the smart thermostat maker to expand its presence in the home — but it’s still thinking about temperature, too. A new leak shows the company may also have a new flagship thermostat inbound.

Dave Zatz of ZatzNotFunny unearthed the following image of a new room sensor that he says will be bundled with a new, premium thermostat with a glass screen instead of plastic — one likely to be called the Ecobee4+.
