TSMC reportedly starting production of 5nm A14 iPhone chips in Q2 of 2020

What you need to know

  • TSMC looks like it will once again supply chips for iPhones.
  • It will reportedly begin making A14 chips in Q2.
  • It will be manufactured using the new 5nm process.

New near, new chips.

Long-time Apple chip partner TSMC will reportedly begin manufacturing chips for Apple's 2020 iPhones in the second quarter of the year. Those chips will be Apple's A14 system-on-chip (SoC) and will be manufactured using a new 5-nanometer process.

This will be the first 5nm chips to land in an iPhone with the previous A12 and A13 chips using the previous 7nm process. The move should allow for improved temperature regulation and power usage – two things that are vital in mobile devices.

This new DigiTimes report (via 9to5Mac) makes plenty of sense given the usual timescale for iPhone announcements. If Apple follows its previous release cadence we can expect it to announce its new flagship phones in September, with a release in the same month. That would mean production would need to be well underway by then in order to meet the usual high demand that comes with a new iPhone launch.

The move to a 5nm process shouldn't be a surprise, either. We've been hearing of TSMC's move to 5nm for months now and Apple will always want to be at the bleeding edge of processor performance and power efficiency. And right now, that means 5nm.

Apple & UK-based GPU maker kiss and make up after years of spats

What you need to know

  • Imagination Technologies provided GPUs for iPhones and iPads until 2018.
  • Apple warned in 2017 that it would stop relying on the company within two years.
  • Since then the pair have been arguing about employee poaching and more. Now they've made up.

All is well.

UK-based GPU supplier Imagination Technologies has announced that it is again working with Apple after years of public falling out and accusations of employee poaching.

Apple first told Imagination Technologies that it would stop relying on its GPUs for use in iPhones and iPads back in 2017. It said that would happen within two years, with Apple moving to its own chips as soon as the 2018 iPhone X and iPhone 8. But that wasn't the end of it.

Since then the two companies have gone back and forth, arguing over various points including whether Apple poached the UK outfit's employees. But now there's been an announcement, with Imagination issuing a short statement saying that all is now well. In fact, the two companies have signed a new multi-year deal.

Imagination Technologies ("Imagination") announces that it has replaced the multi-year, multi-use license agreement with Apple, first announced on February 6, 2014, with a new multi-year license agreement under which Apple has access to a wider range of Imagination's intellectual property in exchange for license fees.

Apple hasn't yet spoken about the deal, but as 9to5Mac notes this could all be down to Imagination's new IMG A-Series GPU which is said to be the fastest yet. Apple will surely want some of that in its iPhones and iPads.

New law might finally stop all of those robocalls from reaching your iPhone

Goodbye robocalls. At least, we hope.

What you need to know

  • President Trump has signed a new law giving the FCC new powers against robocall abusers.
  • Titled the TRACED Act, the law increases penalties for offenders and allows prosecution by the Justice Department.
  • Carriers must also implement more advanced authentication and provide free call blocking services.

President Trump has signed a new law that looks to combat the robocalling industry and protect consumers against spam and fraud. The Pallone-Thune Telephone Robocall Abuse Criminal Enforcement and Deterrence, or TRACED Act, is legislation that has been anticipated for a while. Reported by AppleInsider, the legislation has received nearly unanimous support in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, and with the President's signature has now become law.

The office of White House Press Secretary Stephanie Grisham released a statement touting the legislation's advancements to protect consumers from robocalls and give the FCC more power to enforce the law.

"This historic legislation will provide American consumers with even greater protection against annoying unsolicited robocalls. American families deserve control over their communications, and this legislation will update our laws and regulations to stiffen penalties, increase transparency, and enhance government collaboration to stop unwanted solicitation. President Donald J. Trump is proud to have worked with Congress to get this bipartisan legislation to his desk, and even prouder to sign it into law today."

In practice, the law gives new power and authority to the Federal Communications Commission. The agency will now be able to fine robocall abusers up to $10,000 per call if they determine an offense. Going further, offenders may now also be prosecuted by the Justice Department.

Carriers are also being given new requirements as well. Providers will now have to develop STIR/SHAKEN authentication technologies to help combat against robocalls, and must now provide call-blocking services to their customers for free.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai released a statement thanking Congress and the President for passing the law and gave insight to what abusers of robocalling can expect from the agency going forward.

"I applaud Congress for working in a bipartisan manner to combat illegal robocalls and malicious caller ID spoofing. I thank the President and Congress for the additional tools and flexibility that this law affords us. Specifically, I am glad that the agency now has a longer statute of limitations during which we can pursue scammers and I welcome the removal of a previously-required warning we had to give to unlawful robocallers before imposing tough penalties."

Jimmy Iovine talks Beats, Apple Music, and streaming wars in new interview

Jimmy Iovine still has a lot of ideas, even in retirement.

What you need to know

  • Jimmy Iovine sat down with the New York Times for a new interview.
  • In the interview, Iovine talked music, tech, and how record labels need to adapt.
  • He also talked a little about Apple Music and why he left the company.

Jimmy Iovine, the former owner of Interscope Records and executive of Apple Music, recently sat down with the New York Times to talk about his journey from music to tech, and the challenges that the industry will face in the future.

When asked about why he left Interscope Records and sold Beats to Apple, Iovine said that he says the need for the tech and music industry to come together, and he wanted to play a roll in making that work.

"It's all a response to Napster. I saw how powerful that technology was, and I realized we had to switch gears. The record companies were not going to exist without tech ... I didn't want it to be the other side. I wanted it to be all one thing. I wasn't bailing on music. I always thought that technology was going to get people to listen to music in a better way, and you were going to promote it all through a streaming service. But it would all be in the same house."

Iovine went further to say that "the streaming business has a problem on the horizon, and so does the music business." When pushed further, he expanded on the line, saying that the music streaming business is turning into a commodity.

"It doesn't scale. At Netflix, the more subscribers you have, the less your costs are. In streaming music, the costs follow you. And the streaming music services are utilities — they're all the same. Look at what's working in video. Disney has nothing but original stuff. Netflix has tons of original stuff. But the music streaming services are all the same, and that's a problem."

Iovine had hoped to help solve this problem when he sold Beats to become an executive at Apple, helping to launch and run Apple Music, a music streaming service that now has over 60 million subscribers. When asked about why he left Apple, Iovine said that he "ran out of personal runway".

"When I went to Apple, it was a new creative problem for me. How do we make this the future of the music business? How do we make it not ordinary? But I ran out of personal runway. Somebody else will have to do that."

In his retirement, Iovine helps runs the XQ Institute, an educational initiative Steve Job's wife Laurene Powell Jobs. While he devotes himself to passion projects, Iovine still thinks about where the music industry is going, and how the record labels need to adapt to support artists in order to survive.

"If I were still running Interscope, I would be signing artists and encouraging them. Right now there are a lot of people running around saying, "What's making noise on TikTok?" That's fine. But I'm more encouraged by the people who are saying, "Whoa, this artist has something to say. I'm going to support them, because I believe that in the end they're going to win, and that will make all of us win."

You can read the full interview at the New York Times website.

Director: Apple screensavers are 'most influential films' of last 5 years

What you need to know

  • Rian Johnson recently directed "Knives Out."
  • The director was speaking during a commentary for the movie.
  • He was speaking about drone shots used to make the Apple TV screensavers.

They look great.

Apple TV owners have long known that the device's screensavers are some of the most gorgeous films around. Apple has worked with the likes of the BBC to create them in the past, and now director Rian Johnson has declared them "the most influential films of the past five years."

The "Knives Out" director was speaking on a commentary for the new movie (via Reddit) and the Apple TV screensavers came up when he mentioned drone shots.

Somebody said, and I think it's really true, those Apple TV screensavers with the drone shots of cities are the most influential films of the past five years. I feel like every establishing shot in every movie is now just a beautiful drone shot and it's starting to get a little boring. Ours included.

You can listen to a 30-second clip covering the drone discussion over on Reddit, too.

Johnson's assertion that drone shots are getting a little boring is probably accurate, but that isn't likely to stop them from being a big part of making movies – and Apple TV screensavers – for a long time to come.

Apple answers dev concerns that location tracking alerts will upset users

What you need to know

  • iOS 13 tells users when apps are tracking their location.
  • Developers are concerned that it shows their apps in a bad light.
  • Apple has reiterated its stance that the alerts are an important privacy enhancement.

Apple thinks privacy is more important.

When Apple released iOS 13 towards the end of September 2019 it brought with it a new warning that told users when an app repeatedly accessed their location data in the background. A new Wall Street Journal report notes that developers are worried that the alerts will make users doubt their apps. But Apple isn't concerned.

According to the report some developers have expressed concerns that the new alerts pop up every few days, sometimes even after a user has tapped the "Always Allow" option. Developers worry that the repeated alerts will reflect poorly on their apps, potentially causing users to look elsewhere.

However, Apple has responded with a statement and has again pointed to the fact that it doesn't want to know where someone is in order to make money. And it seems to want to make sure users know that, too.

Apple has not built a business model around knowing a customer's location or the location of their device.

Apple is encouraging developers not to collect location data when it isn't expressly required for the app to function. This new alert does two things; it ensures users are aware which apps are tracking their location, and it keeps developers honest by preventing them from tracking people when they don't need to for reasons other than selling the data to third parties.

But as is so often the case with such things it's still possible that some innocent parties will fall foul of the move if users simply uninstall apps that cause alerts to appear repeatedly.
