How to prepare your Apple Watch for watchOS 6

Before you download watchOS 6, there are a few cleanup steps you should take to get ready for the big download.

If you're worried about whether your Apple Watch can handle the watchOS 6 update, you can get prepared ahead of time by doing a little "fall cleaning" on your devices.

Hold off on backups; instead, clean up your iPhone and Apple Watch

You want your backups to be up-to-date when you make them, and that means doing them right before you update. Instead, take some prep time if you want it to do a bit of cleaning on your iPhone. Delete unwanted apps, get rid of offline music you no longer listen to, trim down any old Messages conversations you don't care to keep. All of these will increase your backup size, and thus, the time it takes to upgrade. The same goes for your Apple Watch: Go into the Apple Watch app and remove any unwanted apps; and hey, maybe clean up your layout while you're at it.

Make an encrypted backup via iTunes

Whether you're doing a restore and install or just a straight update, we highly recommend making a backup beforehand in case anything crazy happens. Our current recommendation is an encrypted backup via iTunes — this lets you save your account passwords and Health data more quickly than doing so via iCloud. Your Apple Watch should make an automatic backup, but you can also manually back it up by unpairing and repairing your watch.

When updating, you'll want to make sure you're somewhere with a fast Wi-Fi connection — or, if you really want to super-power your download, get to a Mac with a fast Ethernet connection and connect your iPhone to that computer via USB cable, then update in iTunes. After updating to iOS 13, you'll see the watchOS 6 update in the Apple Watch app.

If you have any questions or need any extra help, head on over to our discussion forums or leave a comment below!

Updated September 2019: Updated for iOS 13 and watchOS 6.

Netflix is debating bonuses for directors with popular or award-winning films

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Netflix is mulling over paying some form of bonuses to filmmakers whose movies perform well on the streaming platform or nab prestigious awards, according to a report from Bloomberg. The tactic would be a way to win over on-the-fence directors and producers who might be shopping a project around at multiple streaming services, while also entertaining the idea of a traditional theatrical release.

According to Bloomberg, the bonus idea is still being debated internally, but it could be a costly change in strategy for Netflix. The company has traditionally covered the cost of production and paid fixed premiums to filmmakers and producers on top of that.

Hollywood operates differently. Studios tend to grant talent — typically directors and...

How to prepare your iPhone and iPad for iOS 13 and iPadOS 13

Make sure your iPhone and iPad are ready to download the new iOS!

The latest version of iOS brings a whole bunch of exciting updates to both iPhone and the newly minted iPadOS 13 upgrades the iPad in a big way. Whether you've been downloading the beta software through Apple's beta program or you're just waiting to get your hands on it for the first time, here are some important steps to follow to make sure your iPhone and iPad are ready for the update!

Step 1: Make sure your iPhone or iPad is compatible

While iOS 12 is available to a lot of the iPhones and iPads out there, not every previous Apple device is capable of receiving the upgrade. Each new operating system usually has higher power and system requirements which means some older hardware is just not powerful enough to run iOS 13.

Step 2: Clean up your iPhone or iPad

While we don't know the exact size iOS 13 will be, we do know that each new iOS Apple has put out has typically required a little more storage space than the previous operating system. If you don't have enough space on your iPhone or iPad to download iOS 13 or iPadOS 13, you'll most likely get a storage space error and you'll have to delete some data off your device to make some room.

Photos, videos, and apps can all take up huge amounts of storage space. If you're looking to make some room, look for old photos you don't want to keep, videos you don't need anymore, or apps you won't miss. You can always delete these items to make room, or transfer them to your Mac, hard drive, iCloud, or other cloud storage service for safekeeping.

Step 3: Back up your data!

If the unfortunate events of early iOS 10 updating taught us anything, it's that you should always back up your data before downloading any major updates. It is always better to be safe than sorry.

If you don't set up some sort of a backup system - be it iCloud or another service — you only have yourself to blame if you lose all of your data.
