Tesla is cutting salaries and furloughing workers to ‘manage costs’ during pandemic

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Starting April 13th, Tesla is cutting pay for all salaried employees in the US, and placing hourly workers who can’t work at home during the novel coronavirus pandemic on unpaid leave, according to an internal email that was viewed by The Verge.

Salaried employees at the vice president level and above will have their pay cut by 30 percent, according to the email, which was first reported by Electrek. Directors and above will have their pay cut 20 percent. Everyone else will receive a 10 percent pay cut, and Tesla said that workers outside the US will see “comparable reductions.” The pay cuts will last through the second financial quarter, which ends in June.

It’s unclear how many hourly workers will be placed on unpaid leave. But it is...

While Apple has not started orders for the new keyboard yet, Amazon has apparently been running preorders for the upcoming Magic Keyboard for the iPad Pro for weeks. Technology Youtuber DailyTekk posted on Twitter about the preorder this evening.

Amazon is currently taking preorders for both the 11-inch and 12.9-inch versions of the keyboard. While the United States website does not specify a ship date, AppleInsider has noticed that the UK website for Amazon says that customers can expect a ship date of May 30th.

Hong Kong fintech startup Neat raises $11 million Series A to give small companies more banking services

Neat, a Hong Kong-based fintech startup, announced today that it has raised a $11 million Series A to help small businesses do cross-border banking. The round was led by Pacific Century Group, with participation from Visa and MassMutual Ventures Southeast Asia, and returning investors Dymon Asia Ventures, Linear Capital and Sagamore Investments.

Neat also announced a strategic partnership with Visa, which means that in the next few months Neat will start issuing Visa credit cards to SMEs and startups.

This brings Neat’s total funding to $16.5 million, including its seed round announced at the end of 2018.

Like San Francisco-based Brex, which achieved a $2.6 billion valuation last year, Neat focuses on giving startups and small businesses a more efficient, online alternative to traditional banking.

Its services allow them to open business accounts for multiple currencies online, send and receive payments from different countries and apply for corporate credit cards. Neat’s new funding will be used for expansion, with a focus on Southeast Asian customers that do trade with European companies. Last year it opened a Shenzhen office to serve Chinese export businesses, as well as an office in London for Western European companies that trade in China.

Neat co-founder and CEO David Rosa told TechCrunch that businesses are still looking to digitize more of their operations despite the worldwide impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. “Neat is serving entrepreneurs around the world that trade with Asia. Before they may have fitted visits to the bank into their business trips to Hong Kong, this is no longer an option,” he said.

Corporate credit cards can be difficult for startups and SMEs to get because they typically need about three years of audited financials to qualify even for low spending limits, Rosa said. Employees often cannot get a corporate card because their managers do not have the tools to control their spending limits, making reimbursement more difficult. Neat’s partnership with Visa aims to solve many of the problems they encounter (it also offers a Neat Mastercard). In the future, Neat will launch tools for automated payroll, accounting and logistics.

In a statement, MassMutual Ventures managing director Ryan Collins said, “We’re proud to support Neat in the company’s vision to support entrepreneurs. There is a clear demand for better financial products for SMEs, especially when it comes to cross-border payments and trade, and we’re confident that Neat’s passionate and innovative team will deliver.”

Apple Watch Series 5 models hit all-time low prices in this sale

Apple's latest smartwatch has been available since late 2019 and we've already seen some solid savings on it, particularly through the holiday shopping season. However, some steep discounts have returned to a whole host of Apple Watch Series 5 models at Best Buy today with $50 pretty much all configurations there.

The discounts we're seeing today are new lows for some of the entry-level models and just shy of their best-ever prices in other cases. Select deals are also matched at Amazon. These are well worth jumping on if you missed the sales late last year.

The most affordable options are the 40mm aluminum models, each dropping down to $349. That's the lowest the entry-level model has ever gone at $50 off. That same discount is available on the 44mm aluminum models, too, taking their prices down to $379.

Unlike a lot of Apple Watch sales we've seen in the past, the popular Nike+ models are even included here with $50 off their regular prices. If you plan to use your Apple Watch for fitness tracking, these have some neat extra Nike-exclusive features and come with a sporty band. Higher-tier Apple Watch devices are also $50 off, such as cellular models and stainless steel versions so be sure to click through the options to find your favorite style.

Potentially the best part of this deal is the bundle offer with the Powerbeats Pro. Best Buy is offering $50 off the true wireless earphones when purchased at the same time as an Apple Watch Series 5. Given that these earphones are already $50 off there, you're actually saving $100 on their retail price with this offer. With all the money you save, you can snap up a bunch of these great Apple Watch accessories as well.

Apple Watch Series 5's biggest upgrade is its new always-on display. It allows you to check the time without a big arm movement, unlike previous models. There are other upgrades like a built-in compass, boosted 32GB storage, improved S5 processor, plus all of the health and fitness smarts of the previous-generation model. If you're unsure whether to upgrade from the Series 4 to the Series 5, check out our handy guide.

New concept shows how Apple could bring the menu from Mac to the iPad

The concept would make it possible to run professional apps on the iPad even easier.

What you need to know

  • A new concept brings Mac's main menu to iPadOS.
  • 'iPad Main Menu' brings a customized menu system to the iPad
  • UI/UX Designer Alexander Käßner says it is "optimized for pro use"

Apple is preparing to unveil its first major update for iPadOS, most likely called iPadOS 14, this June at WWDC. This will mark the first major update the company will bring to the new software since Apple released an iPad-specific OS to users in September of last year.

While that announcement is only a couple of months away, it isn't stopping creators from coming up with ideas for the software. A new concept from UI/UX designer Alexander Käßner shows off how Apple could take the Main Menu that we've known and loved since the original Macintosh and bring it to life on iPadOS. Käßner says that the concept was built to "improve usability and bring more professional apps to iPad."

"This concept brings the main menu we know and love from Mac to iPad. It keeps the numerous advantages of a written menu, redesigned with touch devices in mind. iPad Main Menu helps bring a vast amount of features to iPadOS for people who seek out this power, while keeping the OS accessible for users who prefer a simpler experience."

The menu could be accessed either through the dock or through a three-finger tap within the apps themselves. Not only could the menu show off the most popular functions that users need first, but it could also support sub-menu navigation to give users even more options. The concept also makes it compatible with Split View, so users could switch between the menus for each app within one screen.

Käßner says that the 'iPad Main Menu' would make the iPad an even better tool for professional users, as it would bring a multitude of options and quick access to them.

You can check out the full concept on Alexander Käßner's website or watch a video of the concept below:

Apple updates Maps search to focus on essential businesses during pandemic

Apple makes the search for essential businesses easier with the latest Maps update.

What you need to know

  • Apple has updated the Maps app.
  • The update brings essential categories to the top of the search list.
  • Businesses like grocery stores and hospitals are made a priority.

Apple has brought a number of changes to its apps in order to inform or help its users during the coronavirus pandemic. The company's latest move hopes to make finding the businesses you need the most even easier.

As spotted by iPhone Ticker, the Maps has been updated with a change to the order of the categories when you bring up the search menu.

The order of categories now highlights the businesses that users might need the most during the pandemic. Categories like Hospitals, Urgent Care, Pharmacies, Groceries, and Food Delivery have been moved to the top, while other categories like Shopping Centers, Gas Stations, and Banks & ATMs have been moved to the bottom of the list.

As reported by MacRumors, Google has gone even further than Apple Maps. The Google Maps app will inform if a business is closed or has reduced hours, as well as warning a user to call a doctor before visiting a medical center.

Tapping on any of the categories will show you the closest businesses in that category to your current location. It's a small change to the Maps app, but just one more way that the company is trying to help its customers as much as possible during the crisis.
