Everything we think we know about Google’s mystery gaming announcement

Google is making a big play in gaming next week, but we’re still unsure exactly what that entails. For years, the company has toyed with the idea of getting involved in what is now the biggest sector of the entertainment industry, worth an estimated $138 billion dollars as of last fall. And it would make competitive sense: Amazon owns Twitch, Facebook acquired Oculus, and Microsoft has Xbox. The only other major tech company without a serious gaming platform or investment of its own, not counting mobile app stores, is Apple, although even the iPhone maker is now rumored to be working on a game subscription service of its own.

«Lo vergonzoso,» dice la joven activista sueca de 16 años, símbolo vivo de las protestas, «es que niños y niñas de todo el mundo tengan que faltar a clase para luchar contra el cambio climático.» Su capacidad de movilización e instigación a la huelga ha llevado a que tres políticos noruegos la propongan para el Nobel de la Paz.

Nuevo récord en el cálculo de dígitos de π en el Día de pi: 31.415.926.535.897 decimales

Aprovechando el Día de pi se ha anunciado que Emma Haruka ha batido el récord de cálculo de dígitos de pi. En el blog de Google –donde trabaja– explica cuál ha sido su «receta» para conseguirlo. No es tarea trivial, porque los más de 31 billones de decimales computados hay que almacenarlos en binario y en total ocupan 170 petabytes (por si acaso tenía preparados 240 PB).

El software que utilizó se llama y-cruncher y lo puso a correr en 25 máquinas virtuales de la nube de Google, 96 vCPUS con 1,4 TB de RAM. Requirió 121 días de cálculos en total, incluyendo unos 112 días de cálculo y otro par de ellos de verificación.
