Arunachalam Muruganantham has spent the last few years designing a better, and cheaper, sanitary pad for women in India. A fascinating report by BBC News details his journey, which began when he realized his wife used dirty rags instead of a proper pad. In fact, only 12 percent of women use sanitary pads in India and 23 percent of young girls drop out of school once they start menstruating. But in a country where the very subject is taboo, reverse engineering a sanitary pad proved a difficult task, with Muruganantham going so far as to fill a soccer ball with goat blood in order to test his prototypes. "I became the man who wore a sanitary pad," he says. He eventually designed a machine so that rural women can make their own, and plans...
The US government is taking Sprint to court for allegedly inflating the cost of performing wiretaps by millions of dollars. In a complaint filed on Monday, the government said Sprint had asked law enforcement agencies for an extra $21 million in reimbursement for its surveillance costs over a period of several years, raising its total bill by around 58 percent. As a penalty for adding "hidden costs" in requests between 2007 and 2010, the Obama administration wants Sprint to pay damages and separate penalties of between $5,500 and $11,000 for each of 29,000 expense claims, a number that could add up to hundreds of millions of dollars.

The expedition was carried out by the University of Aberdeen's Oceanlab team, in association with New Zealand's National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research. An unmanned lander fitted with cameras descended into the trench between the islands of New Caledonia and Vanuatu off Australia's eastern coast.
