99-million-year-old, unknown millipede found trapped in Burmese amber
Picking up where the Jurassic period left off, the Cretaceous is best known as the last hoorah for the dinosaurs. As far as insects are concerned, it gave us ants, termites, aphids and the explosion of pollinators that coincided with the development of flowering plants. But, ironically, the prehistoric-looking millipedes of the order Callipodida, are thought to have come later. Until now.

Two-stage diagnostic process detects Alzheimer’s years before symptoms appear
A new two-step diagnostic process is claiming to confidently detect Alzheimer's disease nearly a decade before clinical symptoms appear. The method, measuring both amyloid and tau proteins in blood and cerebrospinal fluid is hoped to improve the results of clinical trials by helping better identify patients at the earliest stages of the disease.

Organisms that breathe arsenic discovered in the Pacific Ocean
Arsenic is toxic to almost all life forms, but now researchers at the University of Washington have discovered that some microbes in the Pacific Ocean not only tolerate the stuff, but actively breathe it. The discovery has implications for how life may adapt to a changing climate, as well as where we might find it on other planets.

How to land on the Moon
When Apollo 11 touched down on the Moon on July 20, 1969, it was one of the biggest milestones in human history. Today, we take it for granted that the lunar landing was possible, but at the time, no one had ever done anything remotely like it – let alone in a craft that had never been fully tested, the Lunar Module. In view of NASA's promise to return to the Moon in the next decade, this monumental also poses what is still a pertinent question: How does one land on the Moon?

New-and-improved LIGO may have detected a black hole eating a neutron star
The first detection of gravitational waves – ripples in the very fabric of spacetime, caused by cataclysmic events like black holes colliding – was one of the most important physics discoveries in a century. Three years on, we're now getting new detections so often it almost doesn't seem special anymore. Barely a month into a new observation run, the LIGO/Virgo collaboration has now reported five new events, including what may be the first ever detection of a black hole swallowing a neutron star.
