In the wake of tragedy, Uber today announced policy changes that will expand insurance coverage for its drivers in the event they're involved in an accident. Uber will now cover drivers so long as they're logged into the company's smartphone app and available to accept a ride — even if there's no passenger in the car when an accident occurs. This liability coverage kicks in only if a driver's personal insurance fails to cover an incident and provides up to $100,000 in bodily injury coverage and $25,000 in property damage.
"Uber is taking this step to eliminate any ambiguity while the insurance industry and state governments update policies and regulations for the new world of ridesharing transportation," the company wrote in a blog...
Daan Roosegarde invites me into a cramped, pitch-black photo booth no more than a couple feet wide. "Hold on," the Dutch designer whispers into my ear. "Just give it a minute." Soon, the tiny cucumber plant in his hand begins to emit a faint glow.
As my eyes adjust, it gets brighter. Roosegarde’s specimen was created by genetically modifying its molecular structure to include luciferin, a chemical that gives jellyfish their radiant glow. "I’m completely obsessed with jellyfish," Roosegarde says. "They create their own light without a battery or solar panel." Roosegarde’s plant is nowhere near as vibrant as a jellyfish or a fern from Avatar — it’s in fact still quite dim — but serves as a proof of concept for his technology,...
Paris and much of northern France have seen dangerously high pollution levels this week, forcing authorities to offer free public transportation to Parisians for the next few days. On Thursday, the French capital and several other regions were on high alert for the third consecutive day, as unseasonably warm yet windless weather has left small, dangerous particles lingering in the yellowed Parisian air.
Smog levels are similarly elevated in London, where air quality index readings on Friday were higher than the smog-plagued Chinese cities of Shanghai and Beijing, according to the nonprofit group Clean Air in London. On Friday, Paris' Air Quality Index (AQI) readings hovered around 185, putting it on par with Beijing, one of the world's...

Samsung has released three new assistive technology accessories for its Galaxy Core Advance smartphone designed to be used by people with disabilities and visual impairments. The South Korean giant says it developed the tools — a cover that can help users avoid obstacles, a text-reading stand, and a voice label — after conducting "in-depth interviews" with disabled and visually-impaired people.
The new Ultrasonic Cover slips around the outer edges of the Galaxy Core Advance. Samsung says it can guide its user around unfamiliar areas by sensing the presence of people or obstacles up to two meters away and providing warnings through small vibrations or audio cues. The Optical Scan Stand can detect, scan, and read text on paper placed...
