DJI is now making you pay Trump’s tariffs when you buy its drones

Photo by Vjeran Pavic / The Verge

Chinese drone juggernaut DJI has made substantial adjustments to pricing and availability on its product lineup in response to increased tariffs on Chinese goods imposed by the Trump administration. The price hikes were first reported by DroneDJ earlier today, and they represent perhaps the first reported case of a Chinese gadget manufacturer, or a brand that manufactures predominantly in China, passing the cost of Trump’s tariffs onto US consumers.

If you go looking for certain DJI products through the company’s US store, you’ll find price increases across the Mavic 2 line by about 13 percent, which is slightly under the 15 percent figure President Donald Trump announced on Twitter late last month and that went into effect over the...

Loog launches a trio of new educational guitars

Educational guitar maker Loog returned to Kickstarter this week, some eight years after it first hitting the crowdfunding site. This fourth campaign from the company features a trio of instruments aimed at helping accelerating the learning process.

There are three models, each aimed at a different age group: the Loog Mini (ages 3+), Loog Pro (ages 8+) and Loog Pro VI (ages 12+). The latter of which is the company’s first guitar to sport the standard six strings (versus the three it usually offers).

All have a built-n speaker and amp, reducing the need for additional accessories for a kid’s first instrument. They’re also designed to work with the company’s app, which now utilizes augmented reality (guitAR, if you will), to overlay instructions when using the front facing camera on a mobile device. The are flash cards (for chords), videos and games on-board, as well.

The app also has a song book, featuring a wide variety of popular artists, ranging from The Beatles to Taylor Swift. Kids can slow down and mute tracks to play along karaoke-style, while recording themselves in the process.

Kickstarter prices start at $99 for the Mini, versus $150 at retail. The company keeps going back to the crowdfunding well, but the model has worked pretty well so far. Loog’s started to gain some traction in the music education world and, as evidence by its Kickstarter video, landed in the hands of a couple of actual rockstars in the process.

LEGO Star Wars Battles brings adventure to iOS and Android

Fight for your life in this brand new LEGO Star Wars game

What you need to know

  • You can fight other players in real-time, no matter where you are.
  • There are up to 40 different characters and creatures to collect and add to your army.
  • LEGO Star Wars Battles will be available in the year 2020.

LEGO Star Wars Battles has been announced by the official Star Wars website. As the website describes it, LEGO Star Wars Battles is a mobile game that "combines competitive combat, character collecting, and tower building with the classic charm and humor of LEGO."

In this game, you'll be able to collect and then lead an army of LEGO Star Wars characters into real-time, PVP battles. These battles will be set in iconic locations from throughout the movies (such as the tropical planet, Scarif), and as such, will include some very familiar characters that we all know and love like Darth Vader and Luke Skywalker.

Players will need to build LEGO towers on the battlefield as strategically as possible in order to wage combat, defend, and even capture territory. No matter what you do, you'll have to be prepared to follow through to take territory from your enemies. After all, nothing is fair in war.

But if you're more of a collector than a fighter, you'll be pleased to know that there will be up to 40 different characters for you to collect, all of which you can upgrade and customize. And now you'll even be able to answer that age-old question on whether Yoda would win in a fight with Darth Vader.

LEGO Star Wars Battles will be available on iOS and Android in 2020.

Google about to get slapped with an antitrust probe by U.S. state officials

More than half the country's State Attorneys general are said to be ready to begin processes next week.

What you need to know

  • Approximately 30 attorney generals have signed on to an antitrust probe aimed at Google.
  • The investigation is expected to be announced on Monday.
  • It's still unknown whether other tech giants like Amazon or Facebook will also see antitrust scrutiny.

The Washington Post is reporting an antitrust investigation into Google's actions expected to be announced at a news conference on Monday in Washington. This is part of a coalition of states that are questioning whether tech giants are breaking antitrust laws.

Recently, the federal government, headed by the Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), launched a national investigation into antitrust actions against Amazon, Apple, Facebook, and Google. This new information is on a state level, allowing states to independently seek answers to their questions about whether tech companies should have the overarching influence regulators fear may be used to sway opinion.

Outside of the nation's capital, however, state officials also have started questioning the growing influence of big tech. Attorneys general in multiple states have threatened that competition probes could be on the horizon...

According to the Washington Post, states like Louisiana and Mississippi have already been grilling Google for how it surfaces search results, while Texas officials say that Google may be violating state laws if they're proven to have a bias at Google that results in censorship of conservative viewpoints.

Google spokesperson Jose Castaneda has responded publicly in a statement to questions about whether its algorithm search query offers up bias results.

Google's services help people every day, create more choice for consumers, and support thousands of jobs and small businesses across the country. We continue to work constructively with regulators, including attorneys general, in answering questions about our business and the dynamic technology sector.

There is no information at this time as to which of the "more than 30" state attorneys general are joining in this coalition or whether any other tech giants will be put under the microscope on Monday.
