Icon in iOS 13.4 beta reveals potential design of rumored AirPods Studio

Apple may have just leaked the design of AirPods Studio.

What you need to know

  • A new icon in the iOS 14.3 beta may reveal the design of AirPods Studio.
  • The iOS 14.3 beta was released to developers earlier today.
  • The icon is similar to that of earlier reports about the design of the rumored headphones.

Reported by 9to5Mac, the new iOS 14.3 beta may have revealed what Apple's rumored AirPods Studio wireless headphones will look like. An icon found in the beta that was released today resembles a design that has been reported previously.

This new icon found in the iOS 14.3 beta released today to developers resembles the alleged AirPods Studio leaked image shared in September. Earlier this year, Bloomberg described AirPods Studio as headphones with "a retro look with oval-shaped ear cups that swivel and a headband connected by thin, metal arms."

The over-the-ear headphones are rumored to include interchangeable parts that would allow owners to switch out earcups for a more custom fit and different materials for different use cases.

One thing that could set the AirPods Studio apart from competing products is the inclusion of interchangeable parts. The pads of the headphones are said to be magnetic, so they can easily be taken off to replace with a different size ear cup for a better fit. This could also let users have different ear cups to use for different purposes, such as exercising.

The headphones may also feature "neck detection" in order to pause audio when you take them off your ears and rest them around your neck.

One of the key features of regular AirPods is ear detection, which automatically pauses the song when you take the earphones off. We've learned that AirPods Studio will have a similar feature, but it will work in a different way. Instead of ear detection, Apple is working to include sensors that can detect whether the headphones are on your head or neck.

If you're in the market for some over-the-ear wireless headphones but the AirPods Studio don't fit your needs, check out our list of the Best over-the-ear headphones.

Concerning when AirPods Studio may be announced, it was reported back in October that Apple may use part of its rumored March 2021 event to unveil the new premium wireless over-the-ear headphones. Price rumors range anywhere from $349 to $599.

  • Casey Wilson has signed on to star in The Shrink Next Door.
  • She will play the wife of manipulative psychiatrist Dr. Isaac "Ike" Herschkopf, played by Paul Rudd.
  • The role will reunite Wilson with Kathryn Hahn who has also signed on to the series.

Reported by Variety, Carey Wilson has signed on to star alongside Paul Rudd and Will Ferrell in the upcoming dark comedy series The Shrink Next Door on Apple TV+.

She joins previously announced cast members Will Ferrell, Paul Rudd, and Kathryn Hahn. Inspired by true events documented in the Wondery and Bloomberg Media podcast of the same name, "The Shrink Next Door" is described as an eight-episode dark comedy following the bizarre relationship between psychiatrist to the stars Dr. Isaac "Ike" Herschkopf (Rudd) and his longtime patient Martin "Marty" Markowitz (Ferrell).

Wilson will star as Bonnie, the wife of the manipulative psychiatrist, and will reunite her with Kathryn Hahn, who also recently signed on to the series.

Wilson will star as Bonnie, the wife of Dr. Herschkopf. The role reunites her with Hahn, with the two having appeared together on the HBO limited series "Mrs. Fletcher." Wilson is also known for her starring role on the ABC sitcom "Happy Endings" as well as shows like "Black Monday," "Saturday Night Live," and "American Dad." On the film side, her roles include "Gone Girl," "The Disaster Artist," and "Always Be My Maybe."

It is currently unclear when The Shrink Next Door will premiere on Apple TV+.

First M1-powered Macs begin to ship ahead of next week's launch

Customers are starting to see their new Macs ship.

What you need to know

  • Apple has begun shipping its new Macs to customers.
  • Ship times show expected delivery as soon as early next week.
  • This falls in line with what Apple promised during its "One More Thing" event.

Reported by 9to5Mac, Apple has begun to ship the first round of Macs powered by the new M1 processor to customers ahead of next week's launch. Apple announced at its "One More Thing" event that availability for the new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini would begin next week.

The report points to both Apple's own order status as well as its delivery partners like UPS that confirm the shipments.

If you check your order status via Apple's website, you'll likely see that your MacBook Air, Mac mini, or MacBook Pro is still "preparing to ship." But, if you head to the UPS website, you can track the progress of your order and watch as it makes its way to your state.

9to5Mac says that they have confirmed that both the new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro have begun shipping and expect the new Mac mini to being shipping as early as today as well.

As of right now, we've confirmed that the first MacBook Air and Pro orders have shipped, but it's likely that the first Mac mini orders will also start to ship to customers as soon as today. Apple will likely update the shipment status of the first Apple Silicon Mac orders as soon as this weekend or on Monday.

If the new Macs is more than you need, or you're looking to save some money, check out some of the best Black Friday Deals for MacBooks.

In addition to announcing the M1 chip, Apple's first Apple silicon-based processor, Apple also unveiled a new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini featuring the new chip. The first benchmarks for the new Macs show an incredible jump in performance when compared to both the iPhone, iPad, and current generation Macs.

Microsoft adding support for Apple silicon to Office for Mac beta

Microsoft is jumping on the Apple silicon train right away.

What you need to know

  • Microsoft is adding Apple silicon support for Office for Mac.
  • The company is releasing a beta version of the software today.
  • It is unclear when the new version will be available to the public.

Reported by 9to5Mac, Microsoft has announced that they will be releasing a beta version of Office for Mac that includes support for Apple silicon.

Today Microsoft announced that it will launch a new Universal build of its Mac Office 2019 beta today that includes support for Apple Silicon.

Erik Schwiebert, Microsoft's principal software engineer for Apple products, shared the news today on Twitter. Schwiebert noted that the build was a sneak peek and did not say when support will launch for public users.

"MSFT plans to push a Universal build of Mac Office 2019 to the Beta Channel (formerly "Insider Fast") by the end of today. We don't have a public date or version for a final release; this is an initial peek for customers to test on hardware they may be acquiring this week... :)"

As noted in the report, Apple will support x86 apps running on Apple silicon through Rosetta but encourage developers to add native support for Apple silicon.

While Apple says in some cases x86 apps run on Apple Silicon through Rosetta better than natively on Intel Macs, that won't always be the case, and many users will want to know if there is official support for Apple Silicon, especially when it comes to critical apps.

Apple announced its first Apple-silicon based chip at the company's "One More Thing" event on Tuesday. In addition to the announcement of the new M1 processor, the company also revealed a new MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini powered by the chip.

Google Photos will soon start charging for uploads — unless you own a Pixel

Google has just made what is sure to be a controversial change.

What you need to know

  • Photos uploaded to Google Photos will soon start counting against your Google account photo storage, Google announced today.
  • If you go over your storage quota, your Google account will be limited until you either delete some images, expand your limits with a Google One plan, or own a Pixel.
  • The policy change will take place in June 2021, all photos uploaded till then will continue be treated as normal.

Google is making a change to the way it handles photo uploads to Google Photos. Well, it will be making one in about six months, giving users time to prepare. The company will now begin to count high-quality media uploaded to Photos against your Google account storage quota. This applies whether you're on the 15GB free Google tier, or on one of its Google One plans. If you own any Pixel released till date — so the Original Pixel all the way to the Pixel 5 — you're going to be exempt from this.

It's not a policy that'll be applied retroactively. Users who have uploaded their photos in the past (and until the policy comes in on June 2021) will be grandfathered in. This means that older photos won't count against your storage quota unless you choose to edit or otherwise alter it. Google will also show a personalized estimate for you, so that you can see just how this change would affect you personally based on your past usage trends.

Why is Google doing this? Well, the company explained in a blog post:

This change also allows us to keep pace with the growing demand for storage. And, as always, we uphold our commitment to not use information in Google Photos for advertising purposes. We know this is a big shift and may come as a surprise, so we wanted to let you know well in advance and give you resources to make this easier.

So what happens if you go over this storage limit? Well, you won't be able to do anything on your Google account until you clean it up. This includes emails and new backups. You could always get a Google One plan to fill out your storage and give yourself more breathing room, but Google says it'll delete your stuff in two years if nothing is done. In addition to Photos, Google will also start counting files created in its online suite of productivity apps against your storage limits. Those don't take up much space, but it's worth now keeping an eye on them now.

It's a move that's likely to be received with consternation from vocal users, but there is some logic to it. At the same time, this change is another move into the monetization of free Google services. Sure, you can pay nothing and get a base level of service, but you'll really have to start shelling out the bucks if you want to enjoy Googles products nowadays. From YouTube to Google Photos, the company's really cutting down on free lunches.

Pokémon Go surprises players by launching Pokémon HOME support

Pokémon HOME is finally available for Pokémon Go, but it may not be what you imagined.

What you need to know

  • On Tuesday, November 11, 2020, Niantic updated Pokémon Go to support Pokémon HOME.
  • The new feature is limited to level 40 Trainers.
  • Some Pokémon cannot be transferred and there are limits to how often you can transfer Pokémon.

After months of build up, Pokémon HOME, the cloud storage system for Pokémon games is finally compatible Pokémon Go; however, there are some limitations to the service. For starters, only level 40 Trainers can use Pokémon HOME through Pokémon Go. This may only be a temporary level cap, as Niantic often releases features gradually, allowing the top level players to use new feature before they are eventually released for most, if not all players.

Additionally, there are a handful of Pokémon that cannot be transferred into Pokémon HOME at all. Costumed Pokémon are unable to be transferred at all - so sad for my many, many costumed Pikachu. Spinda, a Pokémon known for having approximately four billion different potential versions in the core games (and only nine in Pokémon Go) also cannot be transferred. According to some data miners, Kyurem Black and Kyurem White cannot be transferred either, but as neither has been introduced in Pokémon Go yet, we cannot confirm this.

Certain Pokémon with multiple formes will change upon being transferred. Castform (Sunny, Rainy, or Snowy), Cherrim (Sunny), Giratina (Origin), and Genesect (Burn, Chill, Douse, or Shock) will revert upon being transferred. Dataminers have also found that Darmanitan (Zen), Meloetta (Pirouette), and Keldeo (Resolute) will also revert formes upon being transferred.

The biggest surprise, however, is the cost. While Pokémon HOME is technically available for free with very limited use, most players using HOME pay for the service. On top of that, most players using HOME are also paying for Nintendo Switch online membership. While using HOME through Pokémon Go is technically free, using the in game transporter requires energy and that energy can be used up very quickly. In fact, a single shiny Legendary or Mythical Pokémon will exhaust all of your energy for the week. Given that the service allows players to transfer as many Pokémon as HOME can hold at any point from the core games, this limit is surprising (and disappointing) many players, especially considering the transfers are one way only.

Still, it is finally here and for some top level players, this will be very exciting news. Let us know what you think in the comments and be sure to check out our best Pokémon Go accessories to help you on your Pokémon journey!

Apple launches its 2020 holiday gift guide and extended return policy

Get a gift and have longer to return it.

What you need to know

  • Apple has announced its 2020 holiday gift guide.
  • The guide includes all of Apple's new 2020 lineup.
  • The company has also announced an extended return policy.

Reported by 9to5Mac, on the same day that Apple announced the new MacBook Air, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro featuring the company's new M1 processor, it also launched its 2020 holiday gift guide.

The guide, as of today, is available in the United States and a small number of other countries. The guide features a wide range of Apple's product lineup for 2020, including the new iPhone 12, Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, and the new Apple silicon-based Macs.

According to the report, Apple's language for the gift guide encourages would-be gift buyers to purchase early to ensure that they receive their gifts in time for the holidays. Ship times are understandably something of a concern as Apple works to meet holiday consumer demand during the pandemic.

Apple's tagline this year is "Give something wonderful" and the landing page features a red banner at the top encouraging customers to "Shop early to get all your gifts in time for the holidays." The last bit likely referring to longer shipping times amid the pandemic (especially the closer we get to December).

While the products featured in the holiday gift guide aren't discounted, 9to5Mac notes that Apple does usually offer an Apple Gift Card as a bonus during Black Friday. That has not yet been announced for this year though.

Apple will often do some sort of Black Friday promotion, but it's usually something more along the lines of getting an Apple Gift Card with a purchase rather than an upfront discount.

Those who purchase a product from Apple can now also enjoy an extended holiday return policy. For eligible products that customers receive between November 10, 2020, and December 25, 2020, you can initiate a return for the product until January 8, 2021.

You can check this year's holiday gift guide on the Apple Store website.

Apple's new M1 chip enables up to 20 hours of battery life for the Mac

The MacBook lineup is about to get stellar battery life.

What you need to know

  • Apple held its "One More Thing" event today.
  • The company announced its new M1 chip as well as a new MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
  • The M1 chip is bringing new levels of battery life to each Mac.

At today's "One More Thing" event, Apple announced its new M1 processor for the Mac. The Apple silicon-based chip not only brings new levels of performance to a new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro but an impressive jump in battery life as well.

The new MacBook Air, powered by the new M1 processor, achieves battery life better than any MacBook Air before it. While the previous Intel-based generation featured 11 hours of web browsing and 12 hours of watching movies, the new MacBook Air featuring the M1 processor reaches battery life of 17 hours when web browsing and 18 hours when watching movies.

Battery life gets even more impressive when looking at the new MacBook Pro. Powered by the M1 processor as well, the new MacBook Pro reaches 17 hours for web browsing and 20 hours when watching movies. The previous generation only reached 10 hours when doing either activity, spelling a 10-hour improvement in battery life. It is, as Apple said, the longest battery life to ever exist on any MacBook.

If you'd rather stick with Intel, for now, there are some great Black Friday deals on Apple's Intel-based lineup of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

The new battery life is achieved by the M1 processor and its new high-efficiency cores. When the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro don't need too much power, each laptop can tap into those cores to preserve battery life. While the Mac will switch to higher performance cores in order to handle more demanding tasks, the presence of the high-efficiency cores will bring the longest battery life we've ever seen to the Mac.

This stylus pen is almost as good as Apple Pencil at a fraction of the cost

While we love the Apple Pencil, it's just a tad expensive (the first generation runs around $99, and the second-generation is even more at $130) for some of us, even with Black Friday Apple Pencil deals. But believe it or not, there are some great third-party Apple Pencil clones out there that do most of the same things as the Apple Pencil, but at a fraction of the cost. One of those is the JAMJAKE Stylus Pen, which you can grab for about $24, which is 49% off it's normal price of $50.

Affordable pencil

JAMJAKE Stylus Pen with Palm Rejection

$24 at Amazon

Precise writing and drawing

The JAMJAKE Stylus Pen features palm rejection, accuracy and precision for smooth writing and drawing, and is compatible with several different iPad models.

Even though the Apple Pencil is what we consider to be the best stylus for the iPad, let's face it — not everyone wants to pay about $100 or more for a stylus. The JAMJAKE Stylus Pen is a good alternative — it features palm rejection technology, so you can use it on your iPad just as you would use a pen on paper. The tip of the JAMJAKE Stylus Pen is a nib, so you'll get precision and accuracy when writing and drawing on your iPad. Of course, the nib may get worn down over time, but you get an extra replacement tip, so this stylus will last you a long time.

The JAMJAKE Stylus Pen also has wide compatibility with a variety of iPad models. This stylus works flawlessly with the 11-inch and 12.9-inch iPad Pro (2018-2020), sixth and seventh-generation iPad, iPad mini 5, and iPad Air 3 and later. It charges up via USB-C, going from zero to full in 90 minutes. The stylus pen will last 20 hours on continuous use, and have 365 days of standby time. Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be magnetic so it won't "stick" to your iPad, so you may need a case with an Apple Pencil holder to keep it safe.

Keep in mind that the JAMJAKE Stylus Pen does not have pressure sensitivity (like most other third-party styli), so all lines will be the same thickness and require manual size adjustment in apps. Still, you're saving a good chunk of change, so it's just a minor inconvenience for great value.

MagSafe Duo Charger gets FCC approval ahead of imminent release

The MagSafe Duo Charger could be released at any time now.

What you need to know

  • Apple's MagSafe Duo Charger has received FCC approval.
  • Reviews for the product also went live today.
  • It sets the product up for an imminent release.

Reported by MacRumors, Apple has received FCC approval for its upcoming MagSafe Duo Charger, paving the way for the company to publically release the product. In addition to the approval, reviews for the product went live today, indicating that the charger could release in the coming days.

The FCC filing covers a "two coil charger" with a model number of A2458. The filing includes images, user manuals, and RF exposure reports ... Apple has also received regulatory approval for the MagSafe Duo in other countries such as Korea ahead of its official launch.

Apple revealed last week that the MagSafe Duo Charger was "coming soon" and would be priced at $129 on the Apple Store website. The charger enables users to fast charge their iPhone 12 and Apple Watch at the same time. It also folds up, making it a versatile charging accessory that is both good at home and while traveling.

While the MagSafe Duo Charger includes a USB-C to Lightning Cable in the box, it does not include the 20W USB-C wall charger that it needs in order to charge the iPhone and Apple Watch at maximum charging speeds.

Apple originally announced the MagSafe Duo Charger at its "Hi, Speed" iPhone 12 and HomePod mini event back in October. The charger was announced alongside the MagSafe Charger, as well as the MagSafe Wallet and MagSafe iPhone cases.

Major developers opt out of Mac App Store ahead of Apple Silicon launch

Some of your favorite iPhone and iPad apps might be missing from the Mac App Store for the Apple Silicon launch.

What you need to know

  • Some major developers are opting out of the Mac App Store for the Apple Silicon launch.
  • Apps that will be missing include ones from Google and Facebook.
  • Others, like Netflix and HBO Max, seem to be on track to launch on the store.

Reported by 9to5Mac, some major developers are deciding to opt-out of offering their apps on the Mac App Store ahead of tomorrow's Apple Event, where the company is expected to announce its own Apple Silicon chips that will be able to run iPhone and iPad apps on the Mac.

Apple is allowing developers to choose if they would like to offer their apps through the Mac App Store for Macs running Apple Silicon processors, but it appears that some major developers have chosen to not offer their iOS or iPadOS apps through the Mac App Store, including Google and Facebook. Others, like Netflix, seem to be on track for availability through the store.

If you were expecting to watch YouTube on your new Mac with a native app, you're out of luck. Google has chosen not to offer most of its apps on the Apple Silicon platform, and this also includes Google Maps, Google Drive, and Gmail apps. On the other hand, the Netflix app for iOS is still on track to be available on new Macs, as well as the HBO Max app.

In addition to Facebook, streaming services like Amazon Prime Video and Disney+ will also be missing from the Mac App Store at launch.

Facebook has also chosen not to include its iOS apps on the Mac App Store, such as Instagram, WhatsApp, Messenger, and the Facebook app itself. There are some other noteworthy apps that will be missing from the Mac App Store, including Snapchat, Amazon Prime Video, and Disney+.

Of course, any of these apps could be turned on for the Mac App Store whenever the developer is ready, so this list could change at any time. However, it does appear that some popular iPhone and iPad apps may be missing from the store when Apple launches its first Apple Silicon Macs.

iPhone 12 Pro in Pacific Blue seems to be the most popular iPhone

Pacific Blue is taking the lead as the most popular iPhone color.

What you need to know

  • The iPhone 12 Pro models seem to be the most popular so far.
  • The Pacific Blue color is also the most popular color of the new phones.
  • The 128GB configuration is outselling higher storage configurations.

Reported by Loup Ventures (via AppleInsider), it appears that the iPhone 12 Pro is beating out the iPhone 12 as the most popular new phone so far in its 2020 lineup. This of course comes before the release of the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max which are set to launch on Friday, November 13.

In a note, Gene Munster and David Stokman believed that the two upcoming iPhones will enjoy the benefit of higher stock than the phones that were released back in October.

"Importantly, we were not expecting changes to lead times this morning given supply for the two most recent iPhones is likely greater than the supply for the two iPhones that began pre-orders on Oct. 16th," the duo wrote.

Shipping dates for the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max did, however, begin to slip for certain models when both phones became available for preorder on Friday, November 6. It appears that, in addition to the Pro models being more popular so far, the Pacific Blue color seems to be the most popular for iPhone buyers.

As a takeaway, Munster and Stokman suggest that the iPhone 12 Pro and iPhone 12 Pro Max in Pacific Blue with 128GB of storage ranked as Apple's most popular handset configurations thus far.

Once November 13 rolls around all of Apple's 2020 iPhone lineup will officially launch. As of today, the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max, as well as the HomePod mini, are available to preorder. The iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro have been available to order since October.

Pre-orders are now open for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro at Apple. Devices will begin shipping on October 23.

The video was uploaded to a YouTube channel called DailyUse OS and shows off the MagSafe Duo Charger at work. The person who has the charger shows how it unfolds and folds back down for portability. They also show off plugging the lightning cable into the back of the charger.

They also prop up the Apple Watch charging part of the charger and place both an Apple Watch and iPhone 12 on the charger to show each device getting a charge.

Apple revealed earlier today that the MagSafe Duo Charger will retail for $129 and is "Coming Soon." It also requires Apple's 20W charger in order to provide fast charging to the iPhone 12.

Apple has reportedly held talks to acquire Wondery podcast network

Apple is looking to invest even more into podcasting.

What you need to know

  • Apple has held talks to acquire Wondery.
  • Wondery is one of the largest independent podcasting networks.
  • The deal could eclipse $300 million.

Reported by Bloomberg, Apple has apparently held talks to acquire Wondery, the podcasting network behind popular podcasts like "Dirty John" and "Dr. Death." According to people familiar with the matter, it could be the largest podcasting acquisition yet.

Wondery is seeking $300 million to $400 million in a possible sale, said the people, who asked not to be identified because the negotiations are ongoing.

Apple is one of four companies that have held talks about buying Wondery. Spotify has also had talks about acquiring the podcasting network but has reportedly dropped out of the race.

Apple and Sony are two of at least four companies that have discussed a deal with Wondery, according to one of the people. Though Spotify Technology SA has been the most aggressive buyer of podcasting companies over the last two years, the Swedish audio giant has pulled out of the running, said two people with knowledge of the talks. A deal is expected in coming months, but there's no guarantee that the discussions won't fall apart.

Wondery is one of the largest independent podcasting networks with a monthly audience reaching more than eight million people. Apple is already working with the studio on a project for Apple TV+ that will follow the story of WeWork.

It's possible that the price tag could scare off some would-be bidders, especially since the podcasting industry is still fairly small. But Wondery has a pipeline of podcasts that could be turned into television series and other content. It's already developing more than a dozen TV shows based on its podcasts, including a program for Apple about the rise and fall of WeWork.

Apple has recently put a lot of focus into original content for its Podcasts app. In addition to looking for acquisitions like Wondery, the company has also been working to create podcasts that pair with its original programming on Apple TV+.

Get your first hands-on look at the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max

The first video comparison between the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max is out.

What you need to know

  • The Verge has posted a video about the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max.
  • The video does a quick comparison between the sizes of the new iPhones.
  • The full review of each phone is not yet out.

The Verge has posted a video with a size comparison between the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max. It is one of the first times that we've gotten to see the iPhone 12 mini and iPhone 12 Pro Max in the wild.

While the video is not a full review of either device, it does offer some first impressions of each one of the new iPhones. The iPhone 12 mini, for instance, packs a 5.4-inch display into one of the smallest iPhones that Apple has ever made. While this makes accessing top menus like Notification Center and Control Center much easier, it also does mean an adjustment when it comes to typing.

The iPhone 12 Pro Max comes in on the opposite end of the size spectrum as the largest iPhone that Apple has ever made. While the screen size will be great for those who want a big phone, the Verge does mention that you wouldn't want to drop it on your face while watching videos in bed.

The big round of review videos and articles are expected to hit on Monday, November 9, according to an earlier report. Apple is apparently trying to avoid the new iPhones taking the spotlight away from its Apple Silicon event on Tuesday, November 10.

Jason Sudeikis explains how Ted Lasso landed on Apple TV+

Ted Lasso is an experiment to prove it's possible to be good and interesting at the same time.

What you need to know

  • Collider sat down with Jason Sudeikis to talk Ted Lasso.
  • Sudeikis talks about how Lasso went from commercial to full series.
  • He also talks about how it was important to make Ted Lasso a good guy.

In an interview with Collider, Jason Sudekis sat down to talk Ted Lasso and why a show about a nice guy was something everyone needed right now. Ted Lasso has become one of if not the most popular series on Apple TV+ so far, and has already been renewed for a second and third season.

When asked about how Ted Lasso went from being just a commercial on NBC to a full series, Sudeikis said that almost all of what we saw on screen was actually already created back in 2015.

"We sat down one week and just tried to outline and flesh out an idea for a pilot script, a first script. And then that happened really quick. We were able to figure out that story. I would say 80 percent of what we came up with back in the spring and summer of 2015 is what you see on the show. We even outlined six to 10 episodes."

Sudekis went on to say that the idea sat dormant for awhile until he got hooked up with Bill Lawrence, the creator of Scrubs. Lawrence got behind the project and Apple turned out to be the one who understood what they were going for.

"I told him how we were going to take it from the four-minute format to a half-hour. He really got behind that, which gave us the wind beneath our wings and made us feel like maybe we do have something here ... And then that process took a while. We went around and pitched it to a bunch of places. Apple really sparked to the tone that we were going for and understood what we were going for. And so we had to write a pilot, and then it was like, okay.

When asked why it was important for for the show to be centered around Ted Lasso's decency, Sudeikis said that, for him, it was an exercise in proving that "it's possible to be a good person and still be interesting."

"Because really, I think we're at a time right now where a lot of us are seeing an example of the worst version of a man, someone who's ignorant and arrogant, and having to deal with their foibles on a giant level. For me, ignorance is A-OK, but you pair arrogance… Excuse me, but you pair ignorance with curiosity and I think that brings with it a great deal of humility and empathy. And that's who Ted is. He's as ignorant as anyone that might be in charge of something, but he doesn't think he has it all figured out. He has heroes and he has friends. He wants people to think highly of him, the same way he thinks of them."

Season one of Ted Lasso is streaming now on Apple TV+. The series has already been renewed for a second and third season. You can read the full interview at Collider.
