BT is in talks to acquire EE for £12.5 billion

British Telecom has confirmed it has "entered into an exclusivity agreement with Deutsche Telekom and Orange" which could lead to BT acquiring the wireless carrier EE for about £12.5 billion. This means that the UK's largest land line and broadband company could buy the country's biggest mobile phone carrier.

BT states:

The proposed acquisition would enable BT to accelerate its existing mobility strategy whereby customers will benefit from innovative, seamless services that combine the power of fibre broadband, wi-fi and 4G. BT would own the UK's most advanced 4G network, giving it greater control in terms of future investment and product innovation.

BT previously said it was thinking about buying either EE or rival O2. This deal is far from final; BT says it will spend "several weeks" to complete its due diligence and talks with Deutsche Telekom and Orange, and it's possible that BT could decide to scrap any acquisition plans for EE.

How to refresh a Passbook card on your iPhone

If you've got a lot of cards in Passbook you may have to refresh them manually from time to time. You can do this anytime a balance doesn't seem to be accurate or if the last updated date was a while ago. Even though some cards can automatically refresh themselves, not all of them do. Luckily, refreshing them manually is simple enough.

How to manually refresh a Passbook card on your iPhone

  1. Launch the Passbook app on your iPhone.

  2. Tap on the card you'd like to refresh.

  3. Tap on the info button in the bottom right hand corner.

  4. Pull down from the top of the card and release in order to refresh.

That's it. The card data should update from the actual app itself and present the most recent information. If you're having issues refreshing a particular Passbook card, try launching the app it is attached to and making sure you are signed in. Sometimes if you get signed out of a service, Passbook can't access your account to refresh data. The same can hold true for apps that don't support background app refresh. Launching the app attached to your Passbook card should automatically update Passbook data if all else fails.

How to disable Lock screen notifications for specific Passbook cards

If you use Passbook frequently on your iPhone, you may have noticed that certain passes can use your location and appear on your Lock screen while you're within the immediate area. This is so you can quickly and easily swipe up on your Lock screen to use your pass. The downside of this feature: no passcode is required by default, which could give someone access to your passes without your consent. If you're worried about privacy, but don't want to disable this feature entirely, never fear: You can turn it off on a card-by-card basis.

How to disable Lock screen access for specific Passbook cards

  1. Launch the Passbook app on your iPhone.

  2. Find the pass that you want to disable Lock screen alerts for and tap it to select it.

  3. Tap the Info button in the lower right corner of the pass.

  4. Turn Off the option for Show on Lock screen.

Authy's Today widget will load up to five authentication keys at a time. If you choose to use the widget, but don't want to expose your keys, open Authy, and go to Settings > My Account > Protection Pin, and make sure that Protect Entire App is switched on. The entries in the widget will say Locked, and tapping one of the entries will take you to that service's key in Authy, now protected by your pin.
