Apple’s got new Macs with its first-ever custom designed system-on-chip, the M1. We’re getting three new Macs with the chip—a MacBook Air, 13-inch MacBook Pro, and Mac mini—all available for order now and shipping soon.
Apple’s claims of performance and efficiency are eye-popping, and if even remotely true could be more than enough reason for Mac fans to be excited about Apple’s switch from Intel processors to its own.
Yet, we can’t help but feel the company’s entering this new era for the Mac just a little too conservatively. Outside of the M1 processor, these Macs are dead ringers for their predecessors. Here are five ways Apple could have easily made these Macs better, but didn’t.
Pokémon HOME is finally available for Pokémon Go, but it may not be what you imagined.
After months of build up, Pokémon HOME, the cloud storage system for Pokémon games is finally compatible Pokémon Go; however, there are some limitations to the service. For starters, only level 40 Trainers can use Pokémon HOME through Pokémon Go. This may only be a temporary level cap, as Niantic often releases features gradually, allowing the top level players to use new feature before they are eventually released for most, if not all players.
Additionally, there are a handful of Pokémon that cannot be transferred into Pokémon HOME at all. Costumed Pokémon are unable to be transferred at all - so sad for my many, many costumed Pikachu. Spinda, a Pokémon known for having approximately four billion different potential versions in the core games (and only nine in Pokémon Go) also cannot be transferred. According to some data miners, Kyurem Black and Kyurem White cannot be transferred either, but as neither has been introduced in Pokémon Go yet, we cannot confirm this.
Certain Pokémon with multiple formes will change upon being transferred. Castform (Sunny, Rainy, or Snowy), Cherrim (Sunny), Giratina (Origin), and Genesect (Burn, Chill, Douse, or Shock) will revert upon being transferred. Dataminers have also found that Darmanitan (Zen), Meloetta (Pirouette), and Keldeo (Resolute) will also revert formes upon being transferred.
The biggest surprise, however, is the cost. While Pokémon HOME is technically available for free with very limited use, most players using HOME pay for the service. On top of that, most players using HOME are also paying for Nintendo Switch online membership. While using HOME through Pokémon Go is technically free, using the in game transporter requires energy and that energy can be used up very quickly. In fact, a single shiny Legendary or Mythical Pokémon will exhaust all of your energy for the week. Given that the service allows players to transfer as many Pokémon as HOME can hold at any point from the core games, this limit is surprising (and disappointing) many players, especially considering the transfers are one way only.
Still, it is finally here and for some top level players, this will be very exciting news. Let us know what you think in the comments and be sure to check out our best Pokémon Go accessories to help you on your Pokémon journey!
Get a gift and have longer to return it.
Reported by 9to5Mac, on the same day that Apple announced the new MacBook Air, Mac mini, and MacBook Pro featuring the company's new M1 processor, it also launched its 2020 holiday gift guide.
The guide, as of today, is available in the United States and a small number of other countries. The guide features a wide range of Apple's product lineup for 2020, including the new iPhone 12, Apple Watch Series 6, Apple Watch SE, and the new Apple silicon-based Macs.
According to the report, Apple's language for the gift guide encourages would-be gift buyers to purchase early to ensure that they receive their gifts in time for the holidays. Ship times are understandably something of a concern as Apple works to meet holiday consumer demand during the pandemic.
Apple's tagline this year is "Give something wonderful" and the landing page features a red banner at the top encouraging customers to "Shop early to get all your gifts in time for the holidays." The last bit likely referring to longer shipping times amid the pandemic (especially the closer we get to December).
While the products featured in the holiday gift guide aren't discounted, 9to5Mac notes that Apple does usually offer an Apple Gift Card as a bonus during Black Friday. That has not yet been announced for this year though.
Apple will often do some sort of Black Friday promotion, but it's usually something more along the lines of getting an Apple Gift Card with a purchase rather than an upfront discount.
Those who purchase a product from Apple can now also enjoy an extended holiday return policy. For eligible products that customers receive between November 10, 2020, and December 25, 2020, you can initiate a return for the product until January 8, 2021.
You can check this year's holiday gift guide on the Apple Store website.
The MacBook lineup is about to get stellar battery life.
At today's "One More Thing" event, Apple announced its new M1 processor for the Mac. The Apple silicon-based chip not only brings new levels of performance to a new MacBook Air and 13-inch MacBook Pro but an impressive jump in battery life as well.
The new MacBook Air, powered by the new M1 processor, achieves battery life better than any MacBook Air before it. While the previous Intel-based generation featured 11 hours of web browsing and 12 hours of watching movies, the new MacBook Air featuring the M1 processor reaches battery life of 17 hours when web browsing and 18 hours when watching movies.
Battery life gets even more impressive when looking at the new MacBook Pro. Powered by the M1 processor as well, the new MacBook Pro reaches 17 hours for web browsing and 20 hours when watching movies. The previous generation only reached 10 hours when doing either activity, spelling a 10-hour improvement in battery life. It is, as Apple said, the longest battery life to ever exist on any MacBook.
If you'd rather stick with Intel, for now, there are some great Black Friday deals on Apple's Intel-based lineup of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.
The new battery life is achieved by the M1 processor and its new high-efficiency cores. When the MacBook Air or MacBook Pro don't need too much power, each laptop can tap into those cores to preserve battery life. While the Mac will switch to higher performance cores in order to handle more demanding tasks, the presence of the high-efficiency cores will bring the longest battery life we've ever seen to the Mac.
