The biggest and most important features in iOS 13

Here are some of the biggest changes that we're looking forward to in iOS 13.

Apple has unleashed iOS 13 for iPhone and iPod touch today, which brings a lot of performance improvements and a ton of other big new features. We can't cover every itty bitty feature in great detail, but there were some major welcome additions in iOS 13 today, and here are the most important ones.

Dark Mode

Dark Mode has finally arrived on iOS, and it's something that we've all been waiting for quite some time now. With Dark Mode, you'll have pure blacks and dark grays instead of bright, blinding whites on the screen. It's easier on the eyes, and can help save power on OLED devices.

Dark Mode can be turned on from the Control Center or even automatically at night, so you still get the regular mode during the day.

QuickPath Typing

iOS 13 also brings us a new keyboard that is capable of QuickPath. This means you can type text even faster just by swiping over the letters on the keyboard without lifting your finger, rather than pressing each key individually to type. It's faster and more efficient, thanks to machine learning that recognizes the path you're drawing and automatically converts it for you.

Apple Maps improvements

While Apple Maps has always had some flaws, it seems that they're serious about improving the experience for everyone to make it more in line with the competition.

The new Apple Maps will reveal buildings and other environmental landmarks on the map, rather than having it be a blank slate. You can also add specific locations as Favorites, and build lists of must-sees and other places you want to visit in Collections. And you can explore cities and landmarks with the new Look Around feature, which is an immersive 3D experience where you can move down streets and pan the camera around 360 degrees.

Privacy and Security

Sign in with Apple lets you use your Apple ID to create new accounts on websites and apps. Just confirm with Face ID or Touch ID and you'll just need to enter a name and email. If you prefer not to use your real email, Apple can create a uniquely generated email for that account, and any messages you receive from it are forwarded to your real email address.

HomeKit Secure Video is a new feature where any supported camera can upload your recordings with end-to-end encryption directly to iCloud. Only you and anyone you invite in the Home app can view it. This service is free with your iCloud account and does not count against your storage limit.

iOS 13 also has a "Just Once" option for when apps want to track your location. And if you leave location tracking on, Apple can give you reports of when your location data was accessed. It's much more transparent.

Edit Video

While there are some new improvements to the photo editing interface, the biggest change is the fact that you can now use all of the same photo editing tools on your videos. This means crop, auto-enhance, and yes, rotating videos. No more vertical videos, please.

Audio Sharing

Ever want to share the audio of something you're listening to with a friend? Back in the day, you needed to give them one of your earbuds to do that. No more.

You can pair two sets of AirPods to one iPhone, and send the audio you're hearing to the other set of AirPods. It's like magic!

Voice Control

All of our devices should be accessible by everyone, no matter what handicap. Voice Control is a powerful new accessibility feature that allows you to control your entire iPhone with just your voice. Thanks to a system of labels and grids, you can navigate and control iOS without the traditional input format. And since it uses Siri speech recognition, your voice gets processed locally on your device, and nothing is ever sent to or stored with Apple.

Revamped Photos

The Photos app received a major design overhaul. It is made to help you find, relive, and share your favorite memories. With machine learning, it will be able to hide similar photos and reduce clutter, and the Library will auto-play Live Photos and videos.

Improved Reminders

Reminders has received a big redesign in iOS 13. Now you can use the Quick Toolbar to add dates, times, locations, flags, photos, and more. Siri gives you suggestions on what to add, like creating a reminder while making plans in iMessages. The new Smart Lists automatically organize your reminders and group them by Flagged, Scheduled, and Today.

CarPlay

CarPlay also receives a nice update, the first of its kind ever since being introduced a few years back.

There is now a new CarPlay Dashboard that shows off more information at once in a single glance. It can help you open the garage door as you get home with HomeKit, or your next Calendar event, all while having the map open.

The CarPlay Dashboard also supports the iOS Calendar now, and album art can be shown to make picking out tunes even easier.

What are your favorite new iOS 13 features?

These are some of the biggest features that are coming in iOS 13, and we're eager to get our hands on them, especially Dark Mode. What are your favorite important features in iOS 13? Let us know in the comments.

Can I update my Apple TV to tvOS 13?

Apple has taken the wraps off of tvOS 13. Can your Apple TV run it?

tvOS 13 brings a few new features to the Apple TV experience, from multi-user support (that gets a finally from me) to a slightly redesigned Home screen. There's also support for Xbox One and PS4 game controllers, as well as new screensavers and improved lyrics in Apple Music.

Now you might be wondering, "Can my Apple TV run tvOS 13?" The good news is that the answer is, probably, yes. If you have a fourth-generation Apple TV (aka Apple TV HD) or an Apple TV 4K, the only two versions of the Apple TV that run tvOS, you'll be able to download tvOS 13 to your streaming box when it launches this fall.

This is actually an interesting move on Apple's part. The Apple TV HD, first introduced in 2015, is powered by Apple's A8 system-on-a-chip. This is notable because iOS 13 and iPadOS 13, Apple's major 2019 software releases for iPhones and iPads, respectively, won't run on devices powered by the A8. Because of this, you might expect that tvOS 13 runs only on the A10X-powered Apple TV 4K, but according to Apple, you can install the beta on Apple TV HD, too.

The tvOS 13 developer beta is available for download right now, as long as you have a developer account. If Apple follows its previous pattern, it will release a public beta of the system later this summer.

Test macOS Catalina before you install on your hard drive; Partition it!

You can partition your Mac and boot the dev beta of macOS Catalina alongside Mojave.

If you've always wanted to partition your Mac's hard drive so you can run a separate operating system — including macOS Catalina — in tandem with your current one, it's surprisingly easy to do so thanks to Apple's built-in disk utility program. Here's how to partition your Mac.

Apple occasionally offers updates to iOS, watchOS, tvOS, and macOS as closed developer previews or public betas for iPhone, iPad, Apple TV and Mac (sadly, no public beta for the Apple Watch). While the betas contain new features, they also contain pre-release bugs that can prevent the normal use of your iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch, Apple TV, or Mac, and are not intended for everyday use on a primary device. That's why we strongly recommend staying away from developer previews unless you need them for software development, and using the public betas with caution. If you depend on your devices, wait for the final release.

What is a disk partition?

Partitioning your Mac is basically splitting your hard drive into separate, usable systems. It makes it possible to run two separate operating systems on one device, like Windows and macOS or two versions of macOS (like Mojave and Catalina).

Note: If you want to run Windows on your Mac, Apple's Boot Camp assistant will automatically make a partition for you. Here's how to install Windows.

It is important to note that partitioning your hard drive also splits up your available hard drive space. Each partition will take up a portion of your usable storage. So, if you are running low on storage capacity on your hard drive, we don't recommend partitioning.

Before you start

The most important thing to do before making any changes to your hard drive is to back it up. Seriously. Back it up. Please. Time Machine is the easiest way to back up your data if you don't already have another system in place.

Second, make sure you have enough free disk space to properly run a secondary operating system. Shoot for at least 30GB free, though I recommend closer to 50GB if you have it available.

How to create a partition on your Mac

  1. Open Finder from your dock.
  2. Select Applications.

  3. Scroll down and open the Utilities folder.
  4. Double-click to open Disk Utility.

  5. Select your hard drive in the Disk Utility window. It will be the first drive on the list. It might be named "Fusion," or "Macintosh HD."
  6. Click on the Partition tab.
  7. Click the plus (+) button.

  8. Change the size of the partition you wish to use by dragging the resize controls. The used space is represented in blue.
  9. Name the new partition.
  10. Click apply.

Disk Utility will check the disk and make changes. This will take several minutes.

How to switch partitions

You can switch to the new partition, install the current macOS, and then download and install the macOS Catalina beta from there.

  1. Click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner of your screen.
  2. Select System Preferences... from the drop-down menu.

  3. Select Startup Disk.
  4. Click the Lock in the lower left corner of the window to unlock and make changes.

  5. Enter your system admin password.
  6. Click OK.
  7. Select your partition drive.
  8. Click Restart.

You can also restart your Mac and press the Option Key when you hear the startup chime. This will take you to the Startup Manager and you can select your drive from there.

If you are testing a beta version of macOS, you'll first install whatever the current version is. Then, you can then install the macOS beta.

How to download the macOS Catalina beta

After you have macOS Mojave installed, you can follow the instructions to download and install the developer beta of macOS Catalina.

Apple’s top spec Mac Pro will likely cost at least $35,000

Apple announced today that its new Mac Pro starts at an already pricey $6,000, but the company neglected to mention how much the top-of-the-line model will cost. So we shopped around for equivalent parts to the top-end spec that Apple’s promising. As it turns out: $33,720.88 is likely the bare minimum — and that’s before factoring in the four GPUs, which could easily jack that price up to around $45,000.

For all that dough, big-budget video editors and other creative types get a lot of firepower: a 28-core Intel Xeon W processor, an almost-impossible-to-comprehend 1.5TB of RAM, 4TB of SSD storage, and four AMD Radeon Pro Vega II Duo GPUs — assuming you can afford one.

Add in a Pro Display XDR monitor (and a Pro Stand to go with it), and...
