Brazilian Tech Blog Startupi Raises $300K From Redpoint eVentures, Initial Capital, And Others

startupi logo

Startupi, a site covering the Brazilian startup scene, has raised a $300,000 seed round of its own.

The team was pitched to me as the “TechCrunch of Brazil,” and in fact it has attracted the backing of Roi Carthy, who covers Israeli startups for TechCrunch. (Carthy invested through his firm Initial Capital, which backs early-stage Israeli and Brazilian companies.) Other investors in the round include Redpoint eVentures, a partnership between Redpoint Ventures and BV Capital’s eVentures.

“Covering Israeli startups at TechCrunch for five and a half years, I can attest to the importance of having a leading force and voice in a startup ecosystem,” Carthy told me via email. “In Brazil, no one embodies this more than the tireless and passionate team of Startupi.”

The site was founded in 2008 by journalist Diego Remus and New York angel investor Michael Nicklas to make up for the lack of media coverage on Brazilian startups. There’s now a four-person team, including Remus, entrepreneur Bob Wollheim, tech journalist Amanda Demetrio, and former coworking space owner/multimedia consultant Ricardo Lima. (Demetrio and Lima are both recent hires, thanks to the new round.)

Wollheim said that Startupi currently sees about 100,000 unique visitors per month, and that it has plans to triple that number. The company also runs its own events like Startupi Camp and Startupi Con. (Like the rest of Startupi, those events pages are in Portuguese.)

Bitly CEO Peter Stern Steps Down From The URL Shortening And Analytics Company

bit-ly-logo

Today, Bitly has announced that its CEO, Peter Stern, has stepped down as CEO in a statement on their blog. The reason is that Stern is pursuing other interests, although other details aren’t known at this time.

The NYC-based company has raised $28.5M to date, with the last round being a monster $15M one by O’Reilly, RRE and Khosla last July.

Bitly was in the driver’s seat for link-tracking analytics with their popular short-URL service, and the definition of a hot startup. Once the social web took off, marketers and advertisers everywhere clamored for ways to see how their campaigns were doing in real-time. Bitly has since cooled off since services like Twitter have started handling their own short-URLs. In January, the company announced a new set of social tracking APIs for developers in the hopes that its service would be included in other hot metric products.

Regardless, this definitely seems like an odd time for a CEO to get bored and move on, so we’re digging for more details:

Bitly is announcing today that Peter Stern has resigned to pursue other interests.

“Peter has been a key leader and contributor to the Company,” said Bitly Board member Sam Mandel. “In particular he has been instrumental in transforming Bitly into a successful business while growing its unparalleled data set. We are very happy that he will remain a shareholder and supporter.”

We’ve reached out to Bitly for more information, such as when the process will start to find his replacement.

More soon.

Concur's Travel Shopping Spree Continues, Buys conTgo For Its Travel-Based Messaging Platform

concur_logo

Concur Technologies, the same folks who handle many of our corporate travel and expense systems, has quietly acquired conTgo, a cloud-based mobile communications and messaging platform aimed at the global travel industry.

The terms of the deal were not disclosed.

conTgo, the latest in a long string of acquisitions from Concur, is based in the UK and Australia, and has mobile apps offering communication tools for corporate customers. Concur plans on using conTgo’s location-based services and messaging platform to bring new services to its customers.

Concur outlines some of these new features in a press release, including group traveling that allows users to see where their colleagues are booking and when, deals from local merchants and vendors during delays, colleague carpools, and more.

Here’s what conTgo’s founders Henrik Conradsen and Johnny Thorsen had to say:

We are excited about this perfect fit of both technology and culture between our companies. We will continue to deliver duty of care offerings to our customers and partners and plan to use our award-winning technology for new services that support Concur’s vision of The Perfect Trip.

conTgo specializes in bringing context to communication during travel, especially for corporate clients who need to coordinate with colleagues or remain efficient during layovers or travel hangups. According to the conTgo website, the company serves 5,000 companies and has more than 500,000 unique users around the world from 90 different countries.

This, along with the startup’s founders Henrik Conradsen and Johnny Thorsen, will migrate over to Concur.

Over the past decade, Concur has completed a total of seven transactions, including this latest one of conTgo. Their shopping spree also includes the acquisition of UK-based expense management firm GlobalExpense in 2011, the reportedly $120 million acquisition of TripIt in 2012, as well as Etap-Online, Gelco, Outtask, and Captura.

Concur recently announced “The Perfect Trip” fund, which will inject $150 million into travel startups around the world.

An Interview With Indiegogo CEO Slava Rubin On The Wild Rise Of Crowdsourcing

indiegogo

When you think of crowdsourcing, you usually imagine something like the Pebble smart watch or the Misfit Shine – gadgets that are hard to build in mainstream ways but take off by sparking a groundswell of support. But what about a crowdfunded Tesla museum? Or how about a grocery store that uses no packaging? Those kinds of projects are what Slava Rubin, founder of Indiegogo, is most excited about these days.

“Campaigns that were funded on IndieGoGo at SXSW were funded by every single state in America and funded by 93 countries,” he said. These included films, musical projects, and even calls to get Detroit artists to SXSW.

In short, crowdfunding isn’t just for gadgets anymore.

Projects don’t have to be blockbusters, either. The no-packaging grocery, In.Gredients, raised a mere $15,000 to get off the ground, an entirely attainable amount in the world of crowdfunding but difficult to grab from a bank these days. The prizes for pledging included a pint glass and a plastic container – inexpensive stuff that makes funders feel good and helps the company out immensely.

Rubin was excited to see the growth of crowdfunded products, especially at SXSW, in areas not always associated with crowdfunding. As music, writing, and film becomes part of the Indiegogo/Kickstarter constellation, expect some cool projects to find grassroots support and to blow up at events like this across the country and around the world.
