Pokémon Go players can help choose new locations with Niantic Wayfarer
Even though it's not live for them just yet, Niantic Wayfarer figures to be of great interest to Pokémon Go trainers who'd like to help shape the game.
What you need to know
- Niantic Wayfarer will allow people to nominate and review Wayspots in Niantic games.
- It was inspired by Operation Portal Recon in Ingress.
- Niantic expects to roll it out to Pokémon Go players before the end of 2019.
Ever since Pokémon Go first launched, there's been plenty of discussion and debate about which real world locations have been chosen by Niantic to become PokéStops and gyms in the game. The devs gave people the ability to petition to have places removed from Pokémon Go for various (often very legitimate) reasons, but the newly revealed Niantic Wayfarer is flipping the script in a very cool way and crowdsourcing points of interest for inclusion in Niantic's AR titles.
The video below explains how it works in more detail, but the high concept is that Niantic Wayfarer will allow anyone to nominate locations for consideration, as well as reviewing nominations made by others. It's not just the locations that will be involved, but also their names and descriptive text. Think of it as a Wikipedia of sorts for potential PokéStops and gyms.
Perhaps the coolest part is the way Niantic spells out what it's looking for in Wayspots, its game-agnostic term for AR locations mapped to the physical world. It wants you to help pick spots of cultural signifcance that are easily recognizable, though not ones that are on private property, dangerous to access or too close to schools.
This seems like a dream come true for players who bemoan the fact that there aren't enough gyms where they live (rural residents are already nodding along), and if you're into Ingress — which supplied the seed for Niantic Wayfarer with its Operation Portal Recon — or Harry Potter: Wizards Unite, it figures to be helpful there too. There's no exact release date yet, but since Nantic says it expects to have it live for Pokémon Go players before 2020 arrives, we'll be keeping an eye out for it.

Twitter for Mac is now available to download on the Mac App Store
Twitter makes its long-awaited return to the Mac.
What you need to know
- Twitter for Mac is now available to download from the Mac App Store.
- It launches with support for live streams and automatic Dark Mode.
- The app is one of the first to use Apple's Catalyst technology to bring iPad apps to the Mac.
Today, the Twitter for Mac app has made its return to the Mac App Store. Originally announced at WWDC 2019, many were expecting its return when macOS Catalina became available, but the new OS rolled out without Twitter for Mac. That changed today, as Twitter for Mac became available to download for all macOS Catalina users.
When Apple announced its Catalyst technology at WWDC 2019 in June, the company talked about how developers will now be able to bring their existing iPad apps to the Mac. With well over a million iPad apps on the iOS App Store, this spelled a huge opportunity for developers and for users who have enjoyed apps on the iPad but have had to switch to a browser when accessing the same app on their Mac.
One of the apps highlighted at WWDC was Twitter, who had once had a Mac app but had shut it down years ago. Now, with Catalyst, Twitter has taken its iPad app and brought it back to the Mac.
The app functions exactly as you would expect it to whether you are on a browser, on iPad, or on iPhone. It even comes with automatic Dark Mode support which will change it from light to dark mode along with the rest of the apps in macOS Catalina. Things do look a little odd if you take it into fullscreen, as the timeline currently does not expand to make use of the extra real estate. This is something that will hopefully be worked out in a future software update.
You can download the Twitter for Mac app from the Mac App Store now.

Twitter releases new Catalyst app for macOS Catalina
Twitter’s stop-start history of Mac development entered a new era today with the release of yet another all-new app. The Twitter app is now available in the Mac App Store, but only for users running the new version of macOS, Catalina.
That’s because the app was built with a Catalina framework called Catalyst that allows developers to port their iPad apps over to the Mac with less work than before. Twitter announced that it would support Catalyst at this year’s WWDC in June, though other companies like Netflix have been less enthusiastic. Twitter is by far the most notable Catalyst app so far.
In Twitter’s case, it’s not like the new Mac app is a straight port of the iPad app running in a window — the UI is mostly different overall. But...

Google Maps now helps visually impaired people cross the street and stay on course
Google Maps can now help visually impaired people get to their walking destinations more easily — by continually reminding them that they’re on the right path, warning them when there’s a busy crosswalk ahead, telling them how far away their next turn is using voice navigation, and automatically pointing them back in the right direction if they have to stop.
Here’s a cool video demonstrating the improved guidance in action:
Google’s blog post says the improved guidance is now available on iOS and Android, but only in English in the US and in Japanese in Japan, at the moment. If you want to use it, you can turn it on in Google Maps’ settings menu. The company says support for more languages and countries is “on the way.”

World’s First ‘Nesting Doll’ Diamond Found in Russia
Miners in Russia recently found a rare Matryoshka diamond and it may be over 800 million-years-old.
The bizarre “double diamond” was mined at the Nyurba mining and processing division of ALROSA in Yakutia, according to a press statement. The stone looks like a traditional Russian Matryoshka doll, also known as a nesting doll. According to experts and scientists, it is the first “diamond within a diamond” unearthed in the history of global diamond mining.
Yakutsk Diamond Trade Enterprise found this mysterious diamond during a sorting process and they turned it in to the Research and Development Geological Enterprise of ALROSA, where it was studied with several methods, including X-ray microtomography, Raman, and infrared spectroscopies. Scientists hypothesized that there was an internal diamond at first and the external one developed during the stages of growth.
“The most interesting thing for us was to find out how the air space between the inner and outer diamonds was formed. We have two main hypotheses. According to the first version, a mantle mineral captured a diamond during its growth, and later it was dissolved in the Earth’s surface,” said Oleg Kovalchuk, deputy director for innovations at ALROSA’s Research and Development Geological Enterprise. “According to the second version, a layer of porous polycrystalline diamond substance was formed inside the diamond because of ultra-fast growth, and more aggressive mantle processes subsequently dissolved it. Due to the presence of the dissolved zone, one diamond began to move freely inside another on the principle of [the] Matryoshka nesting doll.”
He added, “As far as we know, there were no such diamonds in the history of global diamond mining yet. This is really a unique creation of nature, especially since nature does not like emptiness. Usually, some minerals are replaced by others without cavity formation.”

Elon Musk and NASA administrator claim SpaceX could fly its first crew in the first part of 2020
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk and NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine reassured journalists this afternoon that their partnership to fly NASA astronauts to the space station is still strong and that the first crews could launch on SpaceX vehicles as soon as the first quarter of next year. This show of strength at SpaceX headquarters comes just two weeks after the two figures exchanged public jabs in the press, suggesting friction between SpaceX and NASA.
“Elon and I are in strong agreement on this — that the one thing we have under development that is of the highest priority is launching American astronauts on American rockets from American soil,” Bridenstine said during his visit to SpaceX. “Human spaceflight is the reason that SpaceX was...
