Regirock, Regice and Registeel will return to raids for four days leading up to Regigigas taking over EX raids in November.

What you need to know

  • Regirock, Regice, and Registell will return to legendary raids and Regigigas will appear in EX raids.
  • Geodude, Magnemite, Swinub, Aron, and Spheal will spawn more often in the wild.
  • Aerodactyl, Shuckle, Sneasel, Skarmory, Snorunt, and Beldum will hatch more often from eggs.

Niantic announced Monday that the Legendary trio of Titans will be returning to raids for four days for a Colossal Event. If you missed out on any of these titans or want to try your luck at a shiny version, they'll be available for four days only.

Make sure to seek out EX gyms too because beginning in November, passes for the Colossal Pokémon, Regigigas, will be featured in EX raids.

For trainers who just can't wait for those EX raids, Niantic will be offering a new way to play. Only available from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. (local time) on Nov. 2, players will be able to purchase tickets for a special research story event. Once purchased, the special research will operate in much the same way as previous special researches, with multiple tasks to complete leading up to a reward of the legendary pokémon, Regigigas.

The tickets will cost $7.99 (or the equivalent in your local currency) and cannot be purchased with Pokécoins. They are also nonrefundable, but if a player does not finish the research by the end of the event, it will still be available to complete afterwards.

Included with the ticket, players will receive:

  • A new Special Research story event, featuring an early-access encounter with Regigigas.
  • A Colossal Discovery medal.
  • Up to 10 additional Raid Passes at no cost during the Special Research story event time period when you spin a photo disc at a gym. These Raid Passes will not be available after the event period is over. You cannot hold more than one Raid Pass at once.
  • A Unova Stone, a Sinnoh Stone, and an exclusive avatar pose from conducting the Special Research.

In addition, several rock, steel, and ice pokémon will be showing up more frequently in both the wild and in eggs. Geodude, Magnemite, Swinub, Aron and Spheal will spawn more frequently in the wild, while Aerodactyl, Shuckle, Sneasel, Skarmory, Snorunt and Beldum will be hatching from eggs. Incubators will also have 2x effectiveness and the shiny version of Skarmory will be available.

Everything you need to capture Darkrai in Pokémon Go

Darkrai, the mythical Dark type pokémon will be hitting Legendary Raids beginning Oct. 17, 2019, at 1 p.m. PDT for a limited time only.

In the same class as Mew, Celebi, and Jirachi, Darkrai is a mythical pokémon that packs a powerful punch. While this Pokémon will be available in five-star raids, it will only be around for two weeks during the Pokémon Go Halloween event. You'll need to get your best Fairy and Fighting-type Pokémon powered up and a group of local Pokémon friends ready. You won't want to miss your chance to catch this one!

What is Darkrai?

Darkrai is a mythical Pokémon introduced in generation IV. It's a rare Pokémon that is usually reserved for events and promotions, so chances to get a Darkrai have always been quite limited. Pokémon Go will not be an exception with its limited two week run.

Here's the official Pokémon description:

It chases people and Pokémon from its territory by causing them to experience deep, nightmarish slumbers.

And the Bulbapedia entry:

Darkrai is a black, shadow-like Pokémon. It has a small head with a white fog-like ghostly plume billowing from its head covering one of its bright blue eyes, with the portion on its face resembling hair. It also has a red spiky growth around its neck. It has skinny arms and long black tatters hanging from its shoulders. It also has black, claw-like hands. It has the slight appearance of an hourglass figure and appears to be wearing an old, ripped cloak. It normally does not have any sort of legs, but it is able to extend stilt-like appendages in their place. In self-defense, Darkrai can retract its head and white "plume" into the pit atop its torso fringed by the aforementioned red growth.

What moves does Darkrai have access to?

Darkrai only has dark fast moves like Snarl or Feint Attack. Neither make an appreciable difference in Darkrai's overall performace. Its charged attacks include the Dark move Dark Pulse, the Ghost move Shadow Ball, and the Fighting move Focus Blast.

If your Darkrai has Dark Pulse, you'll want to focus on Fighting types as they will take reduced damage. Fairy types and Bug types can still work but won't be nearly as effective. Against Focus Blast, you'll want more Fairy types that receive 2x reduced damage. Likewise, you can still get by with Fighting and Bug types but they won't be as durable. Shadow Ball is the hardest to counter as this Ghost type move will obliterate your Fairy types. Stick to exclusively Fighting types to deal with this move set.

What are the best counters for Darkrai?

  • Fighting types such as Machamp, Hariyama, Toxicroak, Heracross, Breloom, Blaziken, Emboar and Lucario
  • Fairy types such as Togekiss, Granbull and Gardevoir
  • Bug types such as Yanmega, Pinsir and Scizor

The best fast moves to counter this powerful Dark type are Counter, Charm, Low Kick, Bug Bite and Fury Cutter. The best charged moves are Dynamic Punch, Dazzling Gleam, Close Combat, Focus Blast, Play Rough, Bug Buzz and X Scissor.

How many players do you need to beat Darkrai?

While it is possible to beat Darkrai with as few as three level 30+ players, you may need up to seven players depending on how many good counters you have at your disposal. You'll also want to keep an eye on the weather for this raid. Cloudy or rainy weather can boost your counters, while fog will boost its already powerful Shadow Ball.

When does the Halloween event begin and end?

  • Starts: Oct. 17, 1 pm PDT
  • Ends: Nov. 1, 1 pm PDT

Pokémon Go is about to get spooky with this year's Halloween event

Beginning Oct. 17 at 1 pm PDT, Pokémon Go will be hosting two weeks of spooky Halloween fun.

Halloween is always a big deal in Pokémon Go but this year promises to be bigger than ever with new Pokémon, costumes for both avatars and Pokémon, new field research, and so much candy. With so much going on in just two weeks, players might feel overwhelmed. Don't worry though because we've got your back! This comprehensive guide contains all the details you need to make the most of this Halloween.

When does the Halloween event begin and end?

  • Starts: Oct. 17, 1 pm PDT
  • Ends: Nov. 1, 1 pm PDT

Increased appearances

As in previous years, Ghost type and Dark type Pokémon will be showing up more both in the wild and in eggs. Ghost type Pokémon that will likely be available include:

  • Gastly
  • Misdreavous
  • Sableye
  • Shuppet
  • Duskull
  • Drifloon
  • Litwick
  • Yamask (potentially shiny)

Dark type pokémon that will likely be available include:

  • Murkrow
  • Sneasal
  • Houndour
  • Poochyena
  • Absol
  • Purloin
  • Stunky
  • Cacnea
  • Drapion

New Shadow Pokémon

With the addition of Team GO Rocket to Pokémon Go, several new shadow Pokémon will need to be rescued from the Pokéstops they've taken over. If you see a dark Pokéstop, be sure to spin it and challenge a Team Go Rocket Grunt for a chance to capture and purify one of the following shadow pokémon:

  • Weedle
  • Kakuna
  • Beedrill
  • Electabuzz
  • Magmar
  • Lapras
  • Mareep
  • Seedot
  • Nuzleaf
  • Sableye
  • Trapinch
  • Cacnea
  • Shuppet
  • And Duskull

New Costumed Pokémon

While Pikachu-wearing witch hats were a fun part of previous Halloween events, this year Pikachu donning a Mimikyu costume will be spawning in the wild. Last year, eggs containing Pichu with witch hats were also available, so there is a good chance we'll also be getting Pichu dressed up as Mimikyu. In addition to Pikachu's new costume, the original three starters will also be donning costumes for the event and showing up in raids.

  • Bulbasaur dressed as Shedinja
  • Charmander dressed as Cubone
  • And Squirtle dressed as Yamask

New Styles

If you love dressing up your avatar for events (and who doesn't?) you'll be glad to hear several new Halloween items will be available in the Style Shop. These will include:

  • A Zubat Bag
  • A Pikachu Onesie
  • A Cubone Cap
  • A Litwick Cap
  • A Mimikyu Bag

Additional Boosts

What would Halloween be without an abundance of candy? For the entire two weeks, players will rewarded with 2x candies for catching, hatching and transfering pokémon. This will be a great chance to get ahead on your candy counts for some of those more expensive evolutions!

New Research

As with any event, there will be themed field and special research available. The special research, A Spooky Message, promises to bring back the Forbidden Pokémon, Spiritomb, so if you weren't playing last year, you'll have another chance to catch it. Be sure to check back later for more details on the new field research.

Darkrai

As if all of that wasn't exciting enough, the mythical Dark type pokémon Darkrai will be showing up in Legendary Raids. In the same class as Mew, Celebi and Jirachi, Darkrai is a mythical pokémon that packs a powerful punch. You will need your best Fighting, Fairy, and Bug type pokémon powered up and a group of local pokémon friends ready to take on Darkrai. You can read all about how to take on this mythical pokémon in our guide here.

Resetting your iPhone SE 2 expectations

Rumors of a new iPhone SE have been… confused to say the least. I think that's because the iPhone SE itself confused some people. Over the course of the last 2 years, we've heard rumors from the Taiwan trades that Apple was targeting 2018 for the next SE-like device. Obviously, that didn't pan out. Supposed leaks from case-makers suggested everything from another internal update to the existing SE, to an iPhone X-style design, notch and all. Then, from financial analyst reports, that this never announced iPhone was never going to be announced. That it had died on the product vine.

Now, supply-chain exfiltrator extraordinaire, Kuo Ming-Chi is back, back again, with a new report, tell your friends, that a next-generation iPhone SE is primed for the first quarter of 2020. And, that's causing some continued confusion. So, let's see if we can't clear that all up.

Rumors have it

Barklay's kicked off the latest round, followed by Nikkei and echoed by Bloomberg. Kuo, though, is the first to offer up details. Here's what he had to say, via MacRumors:

  • iPhone 8 platform, which is the same design Apple used starting with the iPhone 6, but with a glass back allowing for the potential for inductive charging
  • Apple A13 system-on-a-chip, which is the current-generation silicon found in the iPhones 11.
  • 3GB of low-power DDR4x memory. The iPhone 8 has 2GB. The 8 Plus, 3GB.
  • 64GB and 128GB storage options, which are the current entry-level options on the iPhone 8 and XR.
  • No 3D Touch, which means Haptic Touch like the iPhones 11.
  • Silver, space gray, and red color options. So, the gold of the 8 goes away but the Red that was announced the following spring comes back.
  • Starting at $399.

Kuo doesn't say anything about a Plus version. Nor anything about the camera system, which is more vexing. It could conceivably range from the same single, wide-angle that shipped with the 8 back in 2017, to something closer to the wide-angle on the XR, or even the same main shooter that debuted with the 11 just last month.

It would have the A13 image signal processor and neural engine, which means the same computational potential. But some of the best new features, like Night Mode, leverage the 100% Focus Pixels and other hardware aspects as well.

Then there's the question of the U1 chipset, which debuted with the iPhone 11, and may really come into its own when/if Apple Tags become a reality. That would make for a very interesting addition as well.

If we look back, this all sounds straight out of the original iPhone SE playbook from March of 2016. Back then, Apple took the iPhone 5s platform and made it… bigger on the inside. That meant updating it with the then-current iPhone 6s components like the A9 system-on-a-chip, and the 12mp camera with Focus Pixels and deep trench isolation. About the only thing that wasn't quite up to par with the flagship was wireless, which had Wi-Fi and LTE capabilities closer to the iPhone 6 than iPhone 6s. What it added, though, was NFC for Apple Pay.

But it's understanding those compromises – and when they're actually advantages to some segment of the market — that's key. And, that's something even Apple didn't grok. At least not at first.

Future past

Apple is usually pretty damn good at demand forecasting — figuring out how many of any given product they're going to sell so they know how many to make. With the original iPhone SE back in 2016, though, the story goes, Apple missed big. Or, rather, small.

They knew the iPhone SE would appeal to people who wanted a less expensive iPhone but they greatly underestimated how much it would appeal to people who wanted a smaller iPhone. Those people came out in force, and for a while there just wasn't enough product to keep up.

It was the combination of both those market segments — people who wanted a less expensive modern iPhone and people who wanted a smaller modern iPhone that made the iPhone SE as popular as it was. Serving the needs of both was better than serving the needs of just one.

But, that success, and all the rumors and hype surrounding a return of the iPhone SE playbook, has created a lot of expectational debt. And the kind not even Apple can pay off.

What it's not

Regardless of what Apple calls the next, entry-level iPhone — the new iPhone SE, iPhone 9, just iPhone, whatever — there are going to be some people who hear the SE rumors and conflate them with size. Who want Apple to take the 4-inch chassis and, once again, make it bigger on the inside. Only this time, iPhone 11 bigger.

And… that's just not happening. There's just no way to cram an A11 Bionic or any recent Apple system-on-a-chip into a device as constrained as the iPhone 5s platform.

Current silicon is a product of not just the bigger device age, but the bigger battery age as well. And they're all just too hungry to survive in something that small. Apple would have to go with much, much older silicon, which would destroy performance, or create something entirely new, which would destroy entry-level pricing.

Though, aside, there have been rumors that next year's flagship may just shrink down from the current 5.8-inches to a smaller 5.4-inches, so it's possible SE-for-size fans may have some amount of satisfaction come fall 2020.

There are also going to be some people who would be fine with the size but just want the new, modern iPhone X-style design at a much lower price.

And… that's just not happening either. Or, rather, not yet.

The iPhone 8 platform is probably mostly, if not all, paid down already. It costs Apple much less to update it than it does anything in the iPhone X era, which currently bottoms out at the iPhone XR for $599. To make an iPhone X-sized device with iPhone XR display but iPhone 11 internals would be basically making an all new device. And that, again, would destroy entry-level pricing.

No phone like home

So, which markets would the new iPhone SE-style device target? Well, first, people who still want a less expensive iPhone. The current iPhone 8 starts at $449 but pushing that down to $399 hits magic number territory. Like entry-level iPad magic number territory.

Apple has, over and over again, updated classic products with new internals so people who loved those products could update them to something with enough headroom that they could keep on loving them for many more years to come. Apple's fine with that. Great with that. It doesn't cost iPhone 11 sales. It adds iPhone SE-type sales, including upgrades.

And, yeah, that's second: People who still want a Home button iPhone, not a modern design, but with modern specs. Right now, they're holding onto their iPhone 6 or earlier, 6s or 7, not tempted enough by the 8, but something with newer silicon and camera? Take their money.

That creates two really interesting market segments for a new iPhone SE-style device. And, when you combine it with the new, much better iPhone 11 and iPhone 11 Pro branding up top, a new $399 just iPhone at the bottom balances the lineup just so well.

The name game

Now, that just leaves us with the name. Apple doesn't typically reuse names, so SE is likely out. iPhone 9 implies less than 11, which, while true, isn't something people love having in their faces. Same with 8 SE. Just iPad is something Apple's done a few times in the past but just iPhone they haven't done since the original.

So, hit like if you do, hit subscribe if you haven't already, Home button that bell gizmo so YouTube will actually tell you when the next show goes live, and then hit up the comments and let me know — what do you want from the new entry-level iPhone, and what do you think it will be called?

Netgear is releasing a new Orbi mesh Wi-Fi system with a cool, boxy design

Image: Netgear

Many of Netgear’s Orbi Wi-Fi routers seem to look like strange oval towers, but its newest mesh router system has a newer, boxier, and much more interesting design. Check it out:

Image: Netgear

At just 4.1 inches on a side and 2.7 inches tall, I like how small these are. I think they look way cooler than the Orbi oval towers or the multi-antenna TP-Link I’ve got mounted on my wall. That said, the smaller size means the new Orbis aren’t as powerful as Netgear’s recently-introduced $699.99 Orbi Wi-Fi 6 mesh network, not least of which because they don’t have the new Wi-Fi 6 capabilities.

There’s not a lot in the spec sheet to tell us how powerful the new Orbis are. Netgear says they have max speeds of 400Mbps over the...

AMC Theaters will launch its own service for renting and buying digital films

AMC Theaters, the largest movie theater chain in the US, is launching an on-demand video service, according to The New York Times. The service will let customers rent or buy movies, much in the same way Apple’s iTunes Store and Amazon’s Prime Video have operated for years.

AMC Theaters on Demand, as it will be called, will launch tomorrow as an online store with approximately 2,000 films available, with new releases to be added after a standard theatrical run. Unlike the direct-to-consumer subscription streaming services that companies like Disney, Apple, Comcast (NBCUniversal), and AT&T (WarnerMedia) are preparing to launch, AMC’s is specifically video-on-demand (VOD).
