Pokémon Go announces a "feast of events" for the rest of November

Almost halfway through November, Niantic announces three more events to finish off the month.

What you need to know

  • Supereffective Week will run November 19, 2019 through November 26.
  • Terrakion will take over Legendary Raids from November 26, 2019 through December 17.
  • Friend Fest will begin on November 27, 2019 and run through December 2.

With two weeks almost finished in November, Niantic announced three more events to finish off the month and get December off to a great start. While each of these events is relatively low-key in comparison to the Team Go Rocket Looming in the Shadows event or the Halloween event, all three happening in a relatively short span of time will give players plenty to do in the coming weeks.

The first of these events will be the Supereffective Week. Beginning at 1 PM PST Tuesday, November 19 and running for an entire week, Pokémon that are strong partners to use in battles with Team Go Rocket will spawn more in the wild, show up in more Raids and even be featured in Field Research. Shiny Tentacool will also be introduced to the game and have its numbers ramped up for the week. Bonuses will include:

  • 2x Stardust from Trainer Battles
  • More Potions and Revives from Pokéstops
  • Guaranteed Charged TM from three star Raids

Then, from November 26 through December 17, Terrakion will be taking over Legendary Raids. The second of the Swords of Justice, Terrakion will be taking Cobalion's place so if you haven't captured a Cobalion yet, you have a couple more weeks to do so.

Last, but certainly not least, from November 27 through December 2 will be Friend Fest. During this mini-event, players will encounter "family-themed" Pokémon like the Nido lines in the wild and as Research rewards. Bonuses will include:

  • 1/2 Stardust trade cost
  • 2x Special Trades per day
  • Additional Attack Boost when Raiding with Friends

Sounds like November is going out with a bang! Be sure to check out our other Pokémon Go Guides and drop us a comment letting us know what you think of this trio of events coming soon to Pokémon Go.

The org that doles out .org websites just sold itself to a for-profit company

Hacker (STOCK)

Today, the Public Interest Registry (PIR), which maintains the .org top-level domain, announced that it will be acquired by Ethos Capital, a private equity firm (via Domain Name Wire). This move will make PIR, previously a non-profit domain registry, officially part of a for-profit company — which certainly seems at odds with what .org might represent to some. Originally, “.org” was an alternative to the “.com” that was earmarked for commercial entities, which lent itself to non-profit use.

That’s not all: On June 30th, ICANN, the non-profit that oversees all domain names on the internet, agreed to remove price caps on rates for .org domain names — which were previously pretty cheap. Seems like something a for-profit company might want.

John Carmack stepping down as CTO of Oculus to work on AI

The chief technology officer of Oculus, Facebook’s VR subsidiary, is stepping down this week, he posted on Facebook today. John Carmack, who was the lead programmer on Doom and who put the Oculus Rift on the map in 2012, says he plans to focus his time instead on artificial intelligence.

Carmack will remain in a “consulting CTO” position at Oculus, where he will “still have a voice” in the development work at the company, he wrote.

Carmack joined Oculus as CTO in 2013, leaving id Software, the maker of Doom, which he’d co-founded. In March 2014, Facebook announced it would acquire Oculus. In May 2014, ZeniMax Media, id’s parent company, sued Oculus, alleging that misappropriated trade secrets were used to build development tools for...
