Space survival game 'No Way Home' launches on Apple Arcade

Fight your way through deep space to get back home.

What you need to know

  • Apple has added a new title to its Apple Arcade library.
  • 'No Way Home' puts players in deep space with only a ship and a robot to help.
  • Players must fight their way through monsters to get back home.

After launching with over one hundred titles, Apple Arcade continues to grow its library with a release of a new game almost weekly. This week brings another new title to the service - a 'space survival soiree' called No Way Home from SMG Studio.

The game strands players in an unknown galaxy with only your spaceship and robot at your disposal. In your journey across space you will come across other alien species - some friendly, some not - and must navigate your way through it all to find your way back home.

Stranded in a strange galaxy, you must fight for survival using only your wits, your ship, and your party planning robot companion. Explore the universe, befriend bizarre aliens, and blast through hordes of monsters as you endeavor to find a way home.

The game features hand-drawn artwork, an ever-changing game experience, and full controller and touch screen support. SMG Studio says that the game is set in an expanding universe and that players can expect to receive new content, stories, and features over time.

SMG Studio has brought over popular games to the App Store such as Death Squared, Thumb Drift and One More Line. No Way Home is the studio's first title to be released exclusively on Apple Arcade.

Apple Arcade is Apple's newly launched gaming subscription. Players can enjoy over one hundred titles across iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV for just $4.99 per month for the whole family (if using Family Sharing).

Oprah is yanking an upcoming #MeToo documentary from Apple TV+ over creative differences

Photo by Dieter Bohn / The Verge

Apple TV+ may have just lost a second high-profile project that was set to appear on the streaming platform, just one month after it was announced: the Oprah Winfrey-produced documentary that follows music industry executive Drew Dixon, one of the women who accused Russell Simmons of rape and came forward in an interview with The New York Times.

(Apple also indefinitely delayed the theatrical release of its feature film The Banker two months ago.)

“I have decided that I will no longer be executive producer on The Untitled Kirby Dick and Amy Ziering documentary and it will not air on Apple TV+,” Oprah wrote in a statement issued to several film industry publications, including The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline and The Wrap.

Apple didn’t...

Pokémon Go never went away — 2019 was its most lucrative year ever

Pokemon Go James Bareham / The Verge

Pokémon Go, once a viral sensation all over the globe, hasn’t fallen off the map. In fact, the augmented reality game is earning more money than it ever has before.

According to mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower, Pokémon Go had a record year in 2019, taking in an estimated $900 million through in-app purchases. That means Pokémon Go has surpassed its launch year in revenue after seeing a drop off in both players and spending back in 2017. It’s a rare comeback feat for a free-to-play game, many of which are flash-in-the-pan successes and fade into obscurity.

Normally, free-to-play games either come out of the gate with a huge boost in revenue and popularity and then slowly decline as time goes on, or the app starts small and builds...

Apple is replacing your Smart Battery Case for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR

Apple is replacing problematic Smart Battery Cases for the iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR for free.

What you need to know

  • Only Smart Battery Cases for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR are part of the program.
  • The affected cases must be manufactured between January 2019 through October 2019.
  • The problem involves the case not charging or charging intermittently when plugged in.
  • Or the battery case does not charge your iPhone or only charges it intermittently.
  • It is not considered a safety issue.

Apple has officially launched a replacement program for the Smart Battery Case for iPhone XS, XS Max, and XR today. The issue with these cases, manufactured from January 2019 to October 2019, is that they would not charge or only charged intermittently when plugged in to power, or the battery case itself would not charge the iPhone or only do it intermittently.

This replacement program is currently only for the Smart Battery Case that were made for the iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, and iPhone XR that were made between January 2019 through October 2019. The program does not apply for other Smart Battery Cases that were manufactured outside of that date range, and iPhone 11, iPhone 11 Pro, and iPhone 11 Pro Max Smart Battery Cases are not included.

If you have an affected Smart Battery Case, you can take it to Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to have it replaced for free. It is not considered a safety issue. You can locate an Authorized Service Provider here, or make an appointment for your nearest Apple Store.

Any Smart Battery Cases that are taken in for this replacement program will be examined prior to service in order to verify that they are eligible for the program. Affected cases are disposed of in an environmentally friendly way. The replacement Smart Battery Case will be covered for two years.

For those who believe their Smart Battery Case for their iPhone XS, XS Max, or XR is affected, hop on over to the Replacement Program page.

‘No Way Home’ impressions: Finally, some mindless space shooting fun

In Apple Arcade’s new No Way Home, poor Cho is stuck in an escape pod in the depths of space following an explosion that killed everyone else on the Budget Star Cruises ship she was on. She needs to get back home to Earth, but she’s apparently not even in the same galaxy.

“Would you like some smooth jazz while we wait for a rescue?” asks Matey, her robotic Safety Pod Assistant.

Cho—a young mohawked woman who flunked out of pilot school—would not, thank you very much. Luckily for our her, Budget Star Cruises at least didn’t scrimp on the budget for her pod, equipped as it is with an upgradeable laser that blasts boulders and baddies and a grappling hook that can either pull away asteroids or hold enemies in place when they’re trying to avoid her gunfire. And then there’s Matey himself, who floats alongside her and fires off both tutorial taps and automated secondary attacks. If you’ve gotta be lost in space, it could be worse.
