Instant Hotspot is one of the new features Continuity brings to both iOS 8 and OS X Yosemite. With it you can use the data connection from your iPhone or cellular capable iPad in order to tether your Mac. As long as both devices are compatible and connected to your iCloud account, Instant Hotspot is simple to use!
Before continuing, remember that both your Mac and iPhone or iPad must support Instant Hotspot.
These are the Mac models you can use with Instant Hotspot, and you'll need to be running OS X Yosemite or later —
- MacBook Air (2012 or newer)
- MacBook Pro (2012 or newer)
- iMac (2012 or newer)
- Mac mini (2012 or newer)
- Mac Pro (Late 2013)
And these are the iOS devices that currently support Instant Hotspot, and you'll need to be running iOS 8.1 or later —
- iPhone 5 or later
- iPad 4 or later (must have cellular connection)
- All generations of iPad mini (must have cellular connection)
How to use Instant Hotspot to tether your Mac to your iPhone or iPad
- Click on the wifi icon in your Mac's top menu bar.
- Under Personal Hotspots, choose one of your devices that you'd like to use as an internet connection.
- Start browsing the web!
That's all there is to it! Keep in mind your iPhone or iPad and your Mac must have Bluetooth and wifi enabled in order for Instant Hotspot to work. For most folks, Bluetooth and wifi are already enabled on your Mac if you use wifi regularly and use Bluetooth devices such as a keyboard, mouse, or other peripheral.
Once you're done using Personal Hotspot, just disconnect and your iPhone or iPad should automatically turn the Personal Hotspot feature back off if that's how you had it configured in Settings.
