Almost three weeks since it has launched, iOS 8 adoption seems to have slowed down. In fact, when compared to iOS 7 adoption rate, adoption for Apple's newest mobile operating system trails that of its predecessor. With the launch of iOS 8, Apple had experienced a number of glitches, along with the large file size for the upgrade, that may have deterred early adopters.
At present, the Apple developer page lists that only 47 percent of devices have iOS 8 installed on them, which is the same percentage currently as iOS 7 devices.
Some issues with iOS 8 include a large file size that may have prevented people with limited available storage from being able to download and install the OS directly on their devices. Instead, iTunes would be required and that may be a big enough deterrence for some. Additionally, subsequent iOS 8 updates have introduced additional bugs that may not sit well with users who have a stable iOS 7 device, including loss of connectivity, iCloud problems, and slow WiFi speeds along with battery drain. Some users may be waiting for Apple to iron out all the kinks before making the plunge themselves.
And then there's the situation of upgrade or update. With iPhone 5 users now qualified for a two-year hardware upgrade, many may be avoiding the update hassle while they wait for Apple to ship their new iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus.
