Like many colleges, Ohio State University has had to adapt to the coronavirus pandemic by taking measures to protect its staff and its students. One of the things that the university has decided to do is move forward with its spring commencement, but in a unique way.

The university announced in a blog post today that their spring commencement will be held virtually and live-streamed. The stream will occur on Sunday, May 3th, according to Ohio State President Michael V. Drake.

"We are so proud of everything you have accomplished -- and how you have stepped up and remained strong during this time of uncertainty ... Just as you were headed into the home stretch and looking forward to walking across the field in Ohio Stadium on May 3, the world changed for you and for all of us. But you adapted and persevered ... While we will not be able to link arms in Ohio Stadium right now, we will recognize your achievements virtually with your families and friends as we confer your degrees."

The university president also announced that the commencement address would be delivered by Apple's CEO, Tim Cook.

"I am delighted to welcome Tim Cook as our spring commencement speaker ... We are grateful for Mr. Cook's participation in this important tradition and know his unique insights will guide Buckeyes as they continue to innovate the future."

Apple has a unique partnership with Ohio State University through its Digital Flagship initiative. The partnership "supports educational innovation for students and economic development opportunities for the community."

Additional details of the virtual commencement are said to be released in the coming weeks.

Apple Music takes second place in streaming music services last year

Apple Music has quickly grown into one of the most popular music streaming services in the world. In a new report from Counterpoint Research, it is now the second most popular music streaming service, placing only behind Spotify.

The music streaming market grew 32% year over year in 2019, amassing a total of 358 million subscribers. According to the firm, the growth is attributed to a growing interest in podcasts, price competition in growing markets, and promotional bundling from carriers.

Apple Music grabbed 24% of the total revenue in the industry and 19% of the total paid subscriptions. The company has been highly focused on growing its services business and, due to that push it grew its subscribers by 36% year over year.

Research Analyst Abhilash Kumar says that while Spotify has managed to maintain its top spot with promotions and exclusive content, Apple is quickly gaining on the service with personalized playlists and new app features.

"Spotify maintained its top spot with the help of promotional activities like free Spotify Premium for three months, price cuts, customized campaigns like Spotify and a focus on exclusive content. Tech giants like Amazon, Apple, Google have started focusing on music streaming and have sufficient cash at their disposal to give stiff competition to Spotify. Apple Music is making improvements in its app like the introduction of night mode, curated playlists to target a group, etc. Similarly, Amazon Music has been trying lossless music and is creating its own niche where it competes with Tidal."

Despite the pandemic, the firm still expects the music streaming industry to grow by at least another 25% year over year in 2020 and reach a total of at least 350 million subscribers.

Ten years of the iPad: Some things never change

It was “a wholly new product,” a “futuristic gadget the likes of which we’ve never seen before” that would somehow “soon be viewed with the same nostalgia-tinged contempt we have for the original iPod and iPhone.” After months of debate and speculation in the aftermath of its announcement, ten years ago this week the original iPad arrived and I finally got to review it.

Anniversaries are an opportunity to look back in time and ponder how much has changed. I’m happy to report that despite spending a bit too much time dewlling on how the iPad didn’t run Flash, my review from April 2010 does a pretty good job of encapsulating the potential of that original iPad. Re-reading that review today also reminds me that we’re still debating a lot of the same issues that the iPad brought up when it was introduced. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
