iPhone 9 cases at Best Buy point to a release as early as this week

We may be only days away from an iPhone 9 announcement.

What you need to know

  • The iPhone 9 may be announced as soon as this week.
  • iPhone 9 cases are already showing up at Best Buy stores.
  • Employees are being instructed that the cases can be sold starting April 5th.

The iPhone 9 has long been rumored to be released this spring and was most likely going to be announced at the March event that Apple had to cancel due to coronavirus concerns. Many speculated that the phone may be delayed indefinitely, but recent developments at retailers like Best Buy indicate we may in store for a release sooner than we thought.

As reported by 9to5Mac, Best Buy stores have begun to receive phone cases for the unannounced iPhone. One case from Urban Armor Gear is described as being designed for the "New iPhone 4.7", 2020". Employees at the stores are currently being instructed to keep the cases out of inventory until April 5th, spelling a potential sell date as early as this Sunday.

This could potentially point to Apple announcing the new low-cost iPhone as early as sometime this week unless the merchandise date that Best Buy currently has is based on earlier estimates, in which case it will surely be pushed back.

While Apple announcing a flagship iPhone in a press release seems unlikely, it is not out of the realm of possibility Apple would use this method to unveil its new low-cost iPhone. Just last week, the company announced the new iPad Pro and MacBook Air by press release, and both products were available for immediate purchase.

The iPad Pro and Macbook Air were both announced on a Wednesday, so if what Best Buy is currently being told remains true, we may only be a couple of days away from being introduced to the iPhone 9.

A new MacBook Pro, HomePod, and more are still planned for release in 2020

Working from home is not stopping Apple from moving forward.

What you need to know

  • Apple is still planning on releasing a number of products this year.
  • A new MacBook Pro, Apple TV, HomePod, and more are expected in 2020.
  • The company is adapting to its remote work environment.

While many of Apple's corporate employees have been working from home as part of the company's efforts to protect its people from the novel coronavirus, it has not stopped the company from moving forward on a number of new generations of its products.

A new report from Bloomberg details that, while the shift to remote work has not been easy, it has not stopped progress on new devices. According to the report, Apple is still planning on releasing new versions of the HomePod, Apple TV, Macbook Pro, iPad, Apple Watch, iMac, and iPhone by the end of this year.

"The company is working on new versions of the HomePod speaker, Apple TV set-top box, MacBook Pro, budget iPads, Apple Watch and iMac for as early as later this year. The next round of flagship iPhones are targeting release in their normal fall window."

Keeping the details of all of these new products a secret is a difficult task, one that Apple has struggled to do even when its employees were working behind closed doors at its campus. Now, with the added risk of employees working on sensitive information at home, Apple has taken steps to ensure this information stays secure.

"As part of the work-from-home order, Apple has clamped down on which employees are allowed to take home future versions of software, including the next release of iOS, the platform that runs the iPhone and iPad. Like with hardware, employees working on unreleased software, such as the upcoming iOS 14, require approval from the highest levels of the organization, the people said."

The company sent employees a memo stressing the importance of keeping confidential information secure while remote and has even gone so far as to offer to purchase desks and other equipment so that people are able to work securely from their home.

"Whether you're working at home or at the office, it's always critical to keep confidential work confidential. While working remotely, use the same care and always securely store confidential items and documents when not in use."

Gene Munster, Apple analyst and co-founder of Loup Ventures, says that the recent release of the new iPad Pro and MacBook Air points to the fact that Apple realizes the world relies on its products and is committed to its timelines.

"Apple has struck the balance between recognizing that much of the world runs on their products and that they need to keep them functioning and advancing, and they are balancing that with employee safety ... they are reminding us with these small products they've recently announced that they're going to keep working."

Google has banned the Infowars Android app over false coronavirus claims

Twitter CEO Jack Dorsey And Facebook COO Sheryl Sandberg Testify To Senate Committee On Foreign Influence Operations Photo by Drew Angerer/Getty Images

Google has banned the Infowars Android app from the Google Play store, the company confirmed to Wired on Friday. Google also confirmed the app’s removal to The Verge, and we couldn’t find the Infowars app in a search on the Play Store this evening.

The app was apparently removed because of a video posted by radio host and conspiracy theorist Alex Jones that, according to Wired, “disputed the need for social distancing, shelter in place, and quarantine efforts meant to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus.” Before it was removed, the app had more than 100,000 downloads, Wired reports.

“Now more than ever, combating misinformation on the...

The Magic Mouse isn't the only option for your Mac

Apple's Magic Mouse isn't for everyone. It's got multi-touch gesture support and is rechargeable, but many people would still trade fancy features for a traditional mouse. A good mouse is nothing to scoff at — you use them every day, and you're going to want one that is comfortable and has all the features you want, whether you work from home or in the office. So, if you don't like the Magic Mouse that came with your Mac, you can and should get something else. Here are our top choices!

Best all-around mouse

Logitech M720

Staff favorite

Also known as the Triathalon Mouse, Logitech's low-cost wireless mouse is a great option for most people. It's called the Triathalon Mouse because it has three Bluetooth device connections. You can use it with your iMac Pro at home, your MacBook Pro on the go, and your PC at work.

$34 at Amazon $50 at Best Buy

For the gamers

SteelSeries Rival 650

SteelSeries makes an impeccable gaming mouse with nearly zero lag, pinpoint accurate crosshair placement, and the lowest lift-off detection around. Its buttons and weight balance is highly customizable for even the pickiest gamer.

$106 at Amazon $120 at Walmart

Low-cost option

Amazon Basics Wireless Mouse

If you're looking for a basic mouse with no bells and whistles, and you don't want to pay a lot for it, Amazon makes a reliable, simple mouse with no frills in your choice of fun colors. It also costs less than a large pizza.

From $16 at Amazon

Low profile

Logitech Pebble M350

If you're looking for something that has a slim and flat profile, much like the Magic Mouse, the Logitech Pebble is a great choice. It does use a USB receiver, but it has a very quiet click, left and right-click buttons, and a tactile and responsive scroll wheel.

$30 at Amazon $38 at Walmart

King of the mice

Logitech MX Master 3

Some love the Logitech MX Master 3 because of the shape, while others like it because of its ability to track anywhere (even frosted glass) or because it's rechargeable. If you have multiple computers or supported tablets, you can switch between them easier than ever here, too.

$100 at Amazon $100 At Best Buy

Work or play comfortably

VicTsing Pioneer Wireless Mouse

Nobody likes being in the middle of a big project and then have their hands start to cramp or get sweaty. VicTsing helps to combat this with its ergonomic design, aiming to help fit the contours of your hands while providing a better grip on the sides. There's no USB-C, but VicTsing states the Pioneer's battery will last for up to a year before needing to recharge it.

From $11 at Walmart $30 at Amazon

Get the mouse that works for you

When it comes down to which mouse is the best, it's really down personal preferences. The main thing is you get a mouse that has all the features you want.

We love the Logitech M720 because it's so versatile. The ability to have three connections simultaneously allows you to use it with multiple devices without having to worry about pairing it each time.

If you're looking for a similar look and feel to the Magic Mouse, the Logitech Pebble is probably the closest I have ever tried. It may not be a touch device, but the low profile and flat top make it easy to use for left or right-handed people to use, and it has a super quiet click mechanism, so it never gets annoying.

Lastly, if you like to game at all the SteelSeries Rival 650 is a great gaming mouse that doesn't cost hundreds of dollars. It has very low input lag and incredible accuracy, making it perfect for clicking heads in your favorite shooter or commanding troops or the latest RTS game.
