You can replace the RAM in the 27-inch iMac and here's how

Everybody's processing power, graphics, and memory needs are different. When it comes to picking the perfect Mac with the perfect specs, its unique to each person. Luckily, with the 27-inch iMac, you can start with just 8GB of RAM and upgrade it aftermarket with your preferred brand and amount. The latest iMac (Retina 5K) includes four memory slots and offers base RAM of 8GB (2 x 4GB dual inline memory modules (DIMMs)). You can upgrade to a maximum of 128GB (4 x 32GB DIMMs), depending on the model. Here's how to upgrade the memory (or RAM) on the 27-inch iMac.

Hardware you'll need

Let's do this!

Note: Before beginning any upgrades on an iMac, you should back up your data in the event something goes wrong. You should also make sure that you're working in an anti-static environment. For this, we recommend investing in an anti-static wristband.

  1. Make sure your Mac is turned off for at least 15 minutes before starting to install new memory. This delay will give the machine a chance to cool down.
  2. Disconnect the power cord and any other cables connected to your computer.
  3. Place a soft, clean towel or cloth on a flat surface.
  4. Holding both sides of the computer, place your iMac face-down on the towel or cloth.
  5. Open the memory compartment door by pressing the small gray button that's located just above the AC power port.

  6. Remove the compartment door for your Mac and put it aside, leaving the memory cage in place. You'll need this again after you install the new memory.
  7. Push the two levers on the left and right sides of the memory cage to release it.

  8. Pull the memory cage levers toward you. In doing so, you'll have access to the four DIMM slots.
  9. Remove the existing DIMM(s) by pulling the module(s) straight up and out.
  10. Replace or install a new DIMM by setting it down into the slot and pressing firmly until you feel the DIMM click into the slot. Insert the DIMM with the notch on the bottom, oriented in the correct way.

  11. Repeat Step 10 to install all of your new DIMMs.
  12. Once you've installed all of your DIMMs, push the memory cage levers back into the housing until they click into place.

  13. Replace the memory compartment door.
  14. Place the computer in its upright position.
  15. Plug your cords back into your Mac.

When you first turn your Mac on, it will perform a memory initialization procedure. During this time, your iMac will remain dark. Make sure to let the memory initialization complete.

Confirm your new memory count

To confirm that your iMac recognizes the new memory:

  1. Click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner of the screen.
  2. Click on About this Mac.
  3. Confirm the new memory on this screen.

  4. For additional memory information, click System Report.
  5. Finally, choose Memory under the Hardware section in the left side of System Information.

It's time to enjoy your new memory!

Additional Equipment

You can go high (or low) with these alternative memory packs.

$600 at Amazon

You can't do any better than this on your 2019 27-inch iMac. Yes, it's blazing fast!

32GB (2 x 16GB DIMMs)

$135 at Amazon

Even this upgrade will give your iMac a nice bump.

Rosewill anti-static wristband

$7 at Amazon

Static electricity can damage sensitive Mac parts, so remove the risk with an anti-static wristband. Fasten it around your wrist and clip it onto your Mac for peace of mind.

YouTube in 4K is finally coming to Safari on the Mac

YouTube in 4K is finally coming to the Mac with the latest beta.

What you need to know

  • macOS Big Sur 11 Beta 4 has added 4K HDR playback for YouTube on Safari.
  • Until now, users have had to use Chrome on macOS to watch YouTube in 4K.
  • The upgrade will be available to all Mac users who upgrade to Big Sur this fall.

Safari is finally going to be able to play YouTube in 4K on the Mac.

Announced by Apple in the macOS Big Sur 11 Beta 4 Release Notes, Safari will now support 4K HDR playback for YouTube videos that were shot in the resolution.

Rene Ritchie, YouTuber and podcast host, also tweeted out the find earlier today:

Until now, playback of YouTube videos in Safari on macOS has been limited to 1080p. This is a welcome update, as users have been able to stream YouTube in 4K through the Chrome browser on the Mac for a while now.

The feature is currently only available to those with the macOS Big Sur 11 Beta 4 installed. The macOS Big Sur Public Beta is still not out, so it is unclear if 4K HDR playback will be available in the first version of that release.

Regardless, it appears that all Mac users will finally be able to stream YouTube in 4K HDR when macOS Big Sur releases to the public this fall.

Prototype of SpaceX’s future Starship rocket flies short hop to 500 feet

SpaceX’s Starship prototype during the test hop, recorded by LabPadre’s livestream | Image: Screenshot from LabPadre livestream

Just two days after returning its first astronauts back to Earth, SpaceX successfully flew a prototype of its next-generation, deep-space rocket in south Texas, sending the vehicle up to 500 feet and then landing it back down on Earth. It’s the largest test version of the massive spaceship to see some air.

The prototype is that of SpaceX’s Starship, a spacecraft the company wants to build to transport people to deep-space worlds like the Moon and Mars. The final version of the spaceship would stand at nearly 400 feet high and 30 feet wide, and be capable of sending more than 100 tons of cargo into low Earth orbit, according to SpaceX. Starship is designed to fly to space mounted on top of a giant rocket booster, known as Super Heavy, and...

Former Google exec Anthony Levandowski sentenced to 18 months for stealing self-driving car secrets

Controversial engineer Anthony Levandowski, who worked for the Google division that would become Waymo before founding trucking company Otto and selling it to Uber, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for trade secret theft during his various stints in the self-driving industry. His sentencing closes the book on a multi-year legal saga stemming from Levandowski’s high-rising and equally fast-falling career in Silicon Valley spanning much of the past decade.

Levandowski was initially sentenced back in March, when the US District Attorney’s office recommended a 27-month sentence. Judge William Alsup on Wednesday sentenced Levandowski to 18 months in prison, to be served at a later date due to the COVID-19 pandemic, according to T...

T-Mobile launches standalone 5G network ahead of iPhone 12 launch

T-Mobile is readying its network for all of the 5G phones.

What you need to know

  • T-Mobile has announced it is launching its standalone 5G network.
  • It's native 5G network will cover 7,500 cities and towns in the US.
  • The move comes only a few months before Apple launches its 5G iPhone.

T-Mobile has announced that it is launching its nationwide standalone architecture 5G network in the United States beginning today. The move comes only a few months before Apple releases its latest lineup of iPhones, which are expected to feature 5G connectivity.

This is some next level 5G. T-Mobile (NASDAQ: TMUS) announced today it is the FIRST IN THE WORLD to launch a commercial nationwide standalone architecture (SA) 5G network. The move immediately expands the Un-carrier's 5G footprint — already the nation's largest — to nearly 2,000 additional cities and towns, brings 5G deeper into buildings and sets the stage for future groundbreaking applications. In other words, SA 5G is the future, and T-Mobile is leading the charge to bring it to life.

T-Mobile had been leveraging their existing LTE networks to deploy 5G in select areas, but the new 5G architecture will be native, allowing the company to deliver faster service in more areas. Neville Ray, President of Technology at T-Mobile, says that Sprint/T-Mobile merger played a large role in their ability to launch the technology.

"Since Sprint became part of T-Mobile, we've been rapidly combining networks for a supercharged Un-carrier while expanding our nationwide 5G footprint, and today we take a massive step into the future with standalone 5G architecture ... This is where it gets interesting, opening the door for massive innovation in this country — and while the other guys continue to play catch up, we'll keep growing the world's most advanced 5G network."

T-Mobile says that, in areas where SA is turned on, engineers have seen a 30% increase in speeds. With today's launch, its new 5G network will be available in 7,500 cities in the United States.

In the near-term, SA allows T-Mobile to unleash its entire 600 MHz footprint for 5G. With non-standalone network architecture (NSA), 600 MHz 5G is combined with mid-band LTE to access the core network, but without SA the 5G signal only goes as far as mid-band LTE. With today's launch, 600 MHz 5G can go beyond the mid-band signal, covering hundreds of square miles from a single tower and going deeper into buildings than before. Thanks to T-Mobile's ongoing 5G build, and by flipping the switch on SA, the Un-carrier has immediately increased its 5G footprint by 30 percent — now covering 1.3 million square miles in more than 7,500 cities and towns across the country.

The 27-inch iMac is the only iMac with aftermarket upgradable RAM

Best answer: You can! The 2020 iMac, like its predecessors of the same size, has an easily-accessible port to allow you to upgrade your RAM for less any time you want.

The 27-inch iMac still has a backdoor for RAM

One of the biggest deciding factors for some people have in figuring out whether to buy the 21-inch iMac or the 27-inch iMac is aftermarket upgradable RAM. The 21.5-inch does not allow for post-purchase upgrades without invalidating your warranty.

The 27-inch iMac, on the other hand, is the only iMac that allows for aftermarket upgrades to RAM. That means you can buy additional RAM any time you want, long after you've bought your new iMac, and install it yourself. It's fairly easy to do. We also have a guide that shows you how to replace the RAM in your 27-inch iMac.

Apple-installed RAM can come with a hefty price tag. You may not need more than 8GB of RAM to start but will want to upgrade to more a year from now. You may want a different supported brand of RAM than what Apple puts in the iMac by default. You're good to start with the lowest RAM and upgrade later when you're ready.

I've done this with two 27-inch iMac computers. Each time, I postpone a RAM upgrade until I need it, which gives me time to save up a little extra cash and keeps me from spending money unnecessarily.

The 21.5-inch iMac is still off-limits

Back in 2012, Apple shut off aftermarket RAM upgrades for the 21.5-inch iMac. RAM was relocated under the logic board, so it was no longer accessible without having to take apart the entire iMac.

These days, if you want to attempt a DIY RAM upgrade on the 21.5-inch iMac, you'd need a lot of experience and a special upgrade kit, something like the ones iFixit sells. Of course, doing so will void your warranty, so it may not necessarily be worth the risk.

If you decide to go with the 21.5-inch iMac, I highly suggest configuring it with the most RAM you can afford at the time you purchase it.

#MeTooSTEM founder admits to creating Twitter persona who “died” of COVID-19

Twitter drama erupted over the weekend when a much-beloved online persona supposedly died of COVID-19 complications—only to be exposed as a fake account/catfishing scheme by controversial neuroscientist and #MeTooSTEM founder BethAnn McLaughlin.

A segment of science Twitter was rocked over the weekend by the discovery that a long-standing, pseudonymous online member had died of COVID-19-related complications. But grief quickly turned to shock, hurt, and anger when the deceased turned out to have never existed. Rather, it was a sock puppet account that we now know was created and maintained by BethAnn McLaughlin, a neuroscientist and founder of the #MeTooSTEM advocacy group whose Twitter handle is @McLNeuro.

"I take full responsibility for my involvement in creating the @Sciencing_Bi Twitter account," McLaughlin said in a statement provided to The New York Times through her lawyer. "My actions are inexcusable. I apologize without reservation to all the people I hurt. As I've reflected on my actions the last few days, it's become clear to me that I need mental health treatment, which I'm pursuing now. My failures are mine alone, so I'm stepping away from all activities with #MeTooSTEM to ensure that it isn't unfairly criticized for my actions."

This certainly isn't the first time a fake persona has manifested on social media. Way back in 2003, controversial American Enterprise Institute scholar John R. Lott Jr.. was outed by The Washington Post for creating a sock-puppet online persona, "Mary Rosh," purportedly a former student, and using it to mount spirited defenses of his work online. In 2017, there was the case of "Jenna Abrams," who boasted 70,000 Twitter followers; the fake persona was so convincing that she managed to spread a viral rumor that CNN's local Boston station had accidentally aired 30 minutes of pornography late one night in November 2016.
