Microsoft + Nokia, versión cristalina

Microsoft-Nokia-Deal-Visualized

Intedezante.

Zynga Settles With Former Employee Over Allegations of Theft of Trade Secrets

alan-patmore-kixeye

Zynga has reached a settlement around a lawsuit last year that accused a former general manager of “wholesale theft” of the company’s trade secrets after he left for rival social gaming startup Kixeye.

Alan Patmore was the general manager of one of Zynga’s most lucrative titles, Cityville. But Kixeye poached him to become vice president of product in September of 2012.

About a month later, Zynga filed a complaint against Patmore saying that he stored more than 760 documents from his work computer in Dropbox before his last day. The company said these files contained design documents for unreleased titles, future monetization plans and compensation information on employees. They later added Kixeye as a defendant.

Patmore said in a statement today: “I accept responsibility for making a serious mistake by copying and taking Zynga confidential information when I resigned from Zynga. I understand the consequences of my actions and I sincerely apologize to Zynga and my former colleagues.”

Both companies would not disclose whether there was a cash component to this settlement. They issued a joint statement: “Zynga Inc. and KIXEYE Inc. have reached a mutually agreeable settlement of their litigation involving Alan Patmore in San Francisco Superior Court.”

This Week On The TC Gadgets Podcast: Apple's iPhones, Disrupt's Hardware Alley, And Greg's Birthday

podcast2

Two very important events went down this week. The first was Apple’s iPhone announcement, which we covered thoroughly (and perhaps exhaustively). The second was TechCrunch Disrupt SF 2013, which was particularly off the chain thanks to appearances from Evan Spiegel, Marissa Mayer, Mark Zuckerberg, as well as an amazing Hardware Alley showing on Wednesday.

We discuss this, TechCrunch writer Greg Kumparak’s birthday, and more on this week’s episode of the TC Gadgets Podcast, featuring John Biggs, Matt Burns, Jordan Crook, Chris Velazco, Romain Dillet and myself, Darrell Etherington.

We invite you to enjoy our weekly podcasts every Friday at 3pm Eastern and noon Pacific. And feel free to check out the TechCrunch Gadgets Flipboard magazine right here, as well as the TechCrunch Droidcast.

Vinod Khosla: 70-80% Of VCs Add Negative Value To Startups

vinod-khosla-tc-disrupt

Vinod Khosla, one of the co-founders of Sun Microsystems who later went on to create Khosla Ventures, says that the vast majority of VCs aren’t in a position to offer decent advice to startups.

In fact, most of them probably hurt startups, he argued.

TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington prodded Khosla to single out VCs that were horrible on boards.

“Who is the VC who is the most full of shit that you’ve ever heard?” Arrington asked.

“I would be offending too many people,” Khosla retorted. “Maybe some percentage that’s substantially larger than 95 percent of VCs add zero value. I would bet that 70-80 percent add negative value to a startup in their advising.”

He said that most VCs “haven’t done shit” to know what to tell startups going through difficult times.

“I don’t know a startup that hasn’t been through tough times,” he said.

He said that founders should listen politely and just do what they want to do anyway.

He said of his approach toward helping entrepreneurs: “I give them advice, but I tell them what I’m uncertain about. I’m confident that I screwed up more often than most people in this room. Hopefully, I can advise entrepreneurs to avoid mistakes. But you can never be sure if you’re trying something new and unreasonable.”
