Samsung Galaxy Note 20 shown off in most detailed leak yet

Image: Evan Blass

Samsung’s Galaxy Note 20, the step-down model from the top-of-the-line Note 20 Ultra, has leaked in a new 360-degree render thanks to tipster Evan Blass. The render shows off a handset with a much flatter screen than what we’re expecting from the Ultra, and the rear camera module also appears to lack the Ultra’s fourth sensor, which is speculated to be either a 3D ToF sensor or a laser autofocus.

Although we’ve heard a lot about the Note 20 Ultra thanks to numerous leaks, including one from Samsung’s own website as well as an early video of the handset itself, relatively little had been revealed about the standard Note 20. We’ve seen still images and a diagram of its camera layout from leaker Ice Universe, but this render from Blass...

Chinese electric vehicle startup Xpeng closes a $500 million Series C+ round

Xpeng Motors, the Chinese electric vehicle startup, has raised about $500 million in Series C+ funding from investors including Aspex, Coatue, Hillhouse Capital and Sequoia Capital China.

Based in Guangzhou, Xpeng’s other backers include a roster of top Chinese tech companies and investors, including Alibaba Group, Xiaomi, IDG Capital, Morningside Venture Capital, GGV Capital and Primavera Capital.

The company’s last funding announcement before this one was in November, when it said it had closed a $400 million Series C and taken on Xiaomi as a strategic investor.

The company didn’t disclose its current post-money valuation, but a source told TechCrunch after its Series C in November that it was “better” than the 25 billion yuan valuation it achieved after its Series B+ round announced in August 2018. Since then, Xpeng has hit two milestones: it released its second smart electric vehicle, the P7 sports sedan, in April 2020, as China was recovering from COVID-19 lockdowns, and in May 2020, secured a production license for its second factory, located in Zhaoqing, Guangdong Province.

The company’s first electric vehicle, the G3 SUV, was launched in December 2018.

Xpeng said last year it eventually plans to hold an initial public offering but wants to build its core business first. Along with other Chinese startups like Nio, Xpeng also competes with Tesla and established automakers like BYD and BAIC group that offer their own electric vehicles.

Tesla is currently suing a Xpeng engineer for allegedly misusing Tesla’s trade secrets. Last month, a United States District Court judge denied one of Tesla’s requests related to the lawsuit’s discovery process. Xpeng said at the time that the ruling “highlights Tesla’s gamemanship and use of discovery as an improper measure to stop with its competitor from competing successfully in the self-driving industry.”

One of Xpeng’s differentiators from some of its rivals is that it builds almost all of its software, and some of its essential hardware, in-house instead of relying on OEMs, including XPILOT, its autonomous driving system; Xmart OS, its in-car operating system; and over-the-air firmware updates.

All electric vehicle makers in China are coping with strong market headwinds. China has the largest electric vehicle market in the world, with more than 400 electric vehicle manufacturers registered in the country. The market grew quickly thanks in large part to government investment and subsidies for buyers, but last year many of those financial incentives were pulled back as Beijing grew concerned about the industry’s rapid expansion.

Along with the COVID-19 pandemic, which forced many Chinese automakers to shut down production earlier this year, this triggered a huge drop in electric vehicle sales (at the same time, sales of traditional cars also fell), leading to speculation that there may be consolidation among rival EV companies.

Nintendo announces ‘Direct mini’ showcase for Monday morning

Photo by Amelia Holowaty Krales / The Verge

Nintendo’s schedule of upcoming Switch games for the rest of the year is almost entirely bare, but that could change very soon; the company just announced a Direct broadcast for 10AM ET Monday morning. As in, today.

Nintendo is describing the broadcast as “the first Nintendo Direct Mini: Partner Showcase, a new series focused on titles from our development and publishing partners.” It’ll be about 10 minutes long and provide updates on a “small group” of previously announced games for the Switch.

While there aren’t many Switch games with release dates set, there are quite a few that have been announced that might conceivably qualify for this broadcast. Here are some examples:

Apple drops two new 'Behind the Mac' videos showcasing the creative process

Go "Behind the Mac" with two artists.

What you need to know

  • Apple has dropped two new "Behind the Mac" videos.
  • The videos follow Tyler Mitchell and James Blake.
  • Each video follows the artist in their creative process over a 24 hour period.

Apple has posted two new "Behind the Mac" videos to its YouTube channel.

The first video highlights Tyler Mitchell, the first black photographer to shoot a cover for Vogue in the United States. The video follows Mitchell in his apartment as he shoots and edits a new series over the course of twenty-four hours.

"What can I do with the sweaters I've worn on my back." Tyler Mitchell takes us to his place in Bed-Stuy, as he works on a new portrait series using only elements from his own bedroom. Remote cameras were set up in the fashion photographer's apartment, capturing his creative process as he shot and edited the series over a 24 hour period. Digging through references, compiling a mood board, capturing the images, scanning them into his MacBook, and editing the selects in Photoshop. Putting the final touches on the portraits just before midnight.

The second video follows Grammy Award-winning artist James Blake as he writes, records, and edits a new song called "ASK FOR MORE" over a twenty-four hour period in his home.

"It feels like a dream that I'm sort of walking through and I'm able to affect what happens in it." James Blake lets us inside his brain as he writes the new song "ASK FOR MORE." Remote cameras were set up in the GRAMMY® Award winner's home studio, capturing his entire creative process as he worked on writing, recording and editing the song over a 24 hour period. From time spent crafting a melody at his piano, to looping and pitching the melody and adding layers, instruments and vocals in Logic Pro X on his MacBook, to editing it into a finished song. Completing the track just after 1am.
