Apple is asking employees to work from home over coronavirus concerns

Apple Park may get lonely for a little while.

What you need to know

  • Apple is now asking corporate employees to work from home.
  • Business Insider received information from a source familiar with the matter.
  • The move is a further measure to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Apple is now recommending that employees of its corporate headquarters begin to work from home as a further precaution against coronavirus concerns.

Reported by Business Insider, a source familiar with the matter told the publication that employees of Apple Park, Apple's corporate headquarters in Cupertino, have been instructed to work from home as a precaution against the spread of coronavirus.

This makes Apple another in a growing list of companies that are moving towards remote work in an effort to prevent the spread of coronavirus. The disease has spread to more than 100,000 people across the world and currently has killed more than 3,000.

The virus has caused major disruptions to Apple's supply chain, retail stores, and events. Just today, Apple canceled all Today At Apple sessions in Italy as part of the country's attempt to limit large gatherings.

The company is also under mounting pressure to cancel its yearly developer conference, WWDC. The conference is typically held in June, but earlier this week the Santa Clara County Health Department issued new guidance around coronavirus, asking businesses to promote remote work for employees and to postpone or cancel large community events.

WWDC normally attracts thousands of attendees from across the globe, so it not unreasonable to think that Apple will choose to cancel the in-person portion of the event and opt for a virtual conference this year. Google has already canceled Google I/O, its yearly developer conference which was supposed to be held in May, and said that it will be offering some kind of virtual event for attendees.

Amazon Flex drivers won’t be paid if they have to stay home due to coronavirus

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

Amazon has told its contract Flex drivers, which deliver the e-commerce company’s packages, to stay home if they get sick amid the ongoing coronavirus outbreak, according to a memo obtained by OneZero. However, unlike Amazon’s hourly workers, who will receive their regular pay even if they have to stay home, it seems as if the company’s Flex drivers won’t be compensated for their missed work.

Here’s the full memo, from OneZero:

It’s worth noting that Amazon doesn’t specifically say in this memo that Flex drivers won’t be paid — but any time one of those drives isn’t working, they aren’t getting paid, similar to Uber and Lyft drivers. So if they’re homebound due to coronavirus, it doesn’t seem as if...

Postmates says it will start ‘non-contact’ meal deliveries during the coronavirus outbreak

Image: Postmates

Food delivery platform Postmates is starting what the company is calling a “non-contact delivery” initiative designed to help reduce the spread of the coronavirus when its contract workers are delivering ordered meals and other goods.

The move was spotted by Recode’s Rani Molla and The Verge has confirmed it is in effect starting today. Postmates users who now open the app should see a notice about the non-contact deliveries, which then prompts users to input a drop-off option like “leave at the door.” The company also emailed registered users about the new option. It is not mandatory.

Nvidia’s GeForce Now loses 2K Games titles, following Activision and Bethesda

bioshoc

Nvidia said today that game publisher 2K Games is pulling its library from the company’s GeForce Now cloud gaming service at 2K’s request.

“Per publisher request, please be advised 2K Games titles will be removed from GeForce NOW today. We are working with 2K Games to re-enable their games in the future,” said Nvidia community manager Cory Banks in a post on Nvidia’s forums. When asked for comment, Nvidia pointed The Verge to this February 20th blog post.

2K publishes the BioShock trilogy, Borderlands series, Civilization games, and NBA 2K series, among others. So the publisher’s withdrawal is a big loss for GeForce Now, which...
