More evidence of Apple's AR headset uncovered in iOS 13 GM

• One developer believes Apple canned the announcement at the last minute.

Over the past few years, we've heard murmurs about Apple's supposed AR headset. Now, thanks to the release of the iOS 13 GM, we have our best evidence yet that something is in development.

Uncovered by developer Steven Troughton-Smith, several references to an AR headset are found, and there are even details describing how the whole system works. Troughton-Smith's findings are backed by 9to5Mac's Guilherme Rambo. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman also chimes in, saying the evidence serves as confirmation that Apple is developing an AR headset.

It seems very much like Stereo AR apps are an app extension type you can include in your iOS app bundle, if you have the entitlements. One imagines that when Apple's headset is attached, it has a dashboard of some kind that shows you your available Stereo AR apps (like CarPlay)

The GameController framework in iOS 13 also has a gamepad profile for a device meant to be used while using stereo AR apps. The controller profile has a clicky trackpad, a trigger button, and a system (home?) button. Handheld controller for Apple's headset? 🤔

There's so much evidence, in fact, that Rambo believes Apple meant to teases the headset at its iPhone 11 Pro event, but canned the announcement at the last minute

The Starboard shell describes an AR headset capable of running stereo AR apps. Content is apparently offloaded to an external display, similar to CarPlay. There are also references to a motion controller meant to be used with the rumored device; the controller may include a trackpad, trigger button, and home button.

Apple is typically very secretive when it comes to future products, but clearly something was overlooked in this instance.

Apple had the time to rip out all the Apple Tag references in iOS 13, but somehow managed to leave all the AR headset subsystems in? Not that I'm complaining, but, wat. 😟

Google’s Apple Arcade competitor Play Pass is officially on the way

Earlier this year, screenshots leaked of an experimental Google Play game subscription service called Google Play Pass, which looked to be a direct answer to Apple’s similar Apple Arcade. But it doesn’t seem to be a test anymore — Google has now teased that Play Pass is officially “coming soon.”

Apple Watch series 5 hands-on: Software is king

CUPERTINO, Calif.—The Apple Watch is the most popular Watch in the world, at this point—and not just among smartwatches. And while it lags behind competitors in terms of some common features, it also offers plenty that other smartwatches don't. Apple is bringing one of the biggest missing features—an always-on display—to the Apple Watch series 5, which the company unveiled at its HQ during an event earlier today.

We spent a few minutes wearing the Watch and trying out its new customization options and features. You can find the photos above and our impressions below.

The real star of the Apple Watch series 5 show is, of course, watchOS 6, which is a notable update that adds on an on-device app store, numerous new watch face customization and functionality options, new apps, and more. We already covered watchOS 6 when it was revealed at Apple's developer conference in June, so I won't spend too much time on it here. We'll dig deep on it when we review the series 5, though.

Which size Apple Watch Series 5 should you get?

Whether you're getting aluminum or steel, Nike+, or Hermès — all Apple Watch 5 models come in two sizes. Some might find picking their size easy to do, whether it's based on wrist size, gender, style, or some other factor. Others, not so much. Here we compare both sizes to help you make a better decision.

Apple Watch Series 5 44mm

Bigger better?

The 44mm Apple Watch Series 5 is the largest Apple Watch version to date, replacing the 42mm versions on the Series 1 through Series 3. This model is the one with more official bands available.

The 2019 40mm Apple Watch now has a screen size that's slightly bigger than the Series 3, but that's mainly because the display is so much larger. Smaller wrists will love this model as will your pocketbook.

Make no mistake, both versions of the Apple Watch Series 5, 40mm and 44mm, are identical except for the display size. Features remain the same.

Time to compare

Unlike traditional watches, which measure case size horizontally, Apple measures the Apple Watch vertically. The smaller of the two Series 5 watch sizes has a height of 40mm; the larger, 44mm. When it comes to width, the smaller Apple Watch is 34mm wide; the larger, 38mm.

The size differences of the two Apple Watch Series 5 models might not sound like very much — 3-4mm here or there — but 4mm out of 40mm is one tenth of the Apple Watch's dimensions.

The rounded rectangular shape of the Apple Watch makes it hard to compare directly with your average round watch, but in the traditional watch world, neither of the Apple Watches would be considered overly wide or high. Big watches are typically closer to 45mm wide.

Even if you think you want to go small, you can still consider both sizes — neither is enormous — though those with smaller wrists may find the 40mm fits more comfortably on the wrist.

The watch's different case sizes also translate to different display sizes. Both are Retina-quality, which means the pixels are invisible to the naked eye at normal viewing distance. The bigger Apple Watch simply has more of those pixels:

The 40mm Apple Watch has a display size of 394x324 pixels The 44mm Apple Watch has a display size of 448x368 pixels Again, this year's small watch has a slightly bigger display than last year's big watch. Let that sink in.

watchOS will fill whatever size display you choose, and for many people, it won't make any difference; that said, if you want more pixels, which translates into bigger text and images, it's worth considering.

Depth perception

Unlike the Watch's two height options and two display densities, there's no difference when it comes to the thickness (or thinness) of the two sizes.

That's because, unlike traditional mechanical or digital watches, the Apple Watch case has to hold a Retina display, the system-in-a-package (chipset), battery, and sensors. If you're trying to figure out which Apple Watch will best fit under the tight cuffs of your shirt, they're both about the same.

Hers and his

Because there are two sizes, and because some of Apple's bands are unique to one size or another, some have tried to simplify the size discussion down to "hers" and "his."

People come in all shapes and sizes, though, and so do tastes. Some women will want the bigger Apple Watch, and some men, the smaller. Some people with small wrists will want the bigger watch, and vice versa.

All this to say — get the size you prefer. Try both on, and see which one better fits your wrist, style, and personality. That's why Apple has sizes, after all, and why both sizes come with identical features.

Band Bias

Since Apple only offers some bands in some sizes, if you have your heart set on a certain band, you may have to be willing to go with the size that matches it. That said, you can get 3rd-party knockoffs for everything in every size and then some, so it only really matters if you want the real thing.

Battery life

The 44mm Apple Watch has a slightly bigger battery than the 40mm watch due to more room in the casing. If battery life is most important to you, this is something to take into consideration.
