A National Treasure Disney Plus series is in development

A National Treasure TV series for Disney Plus is now in development, producer Jerry Bruckheimer told Collider in an interview today. Bruckheimer also reiterated that a new National Treasure film was in the works, though that was first reported in January.

Bruckheimer was light on details for the Disney Plus show, but he did say that “it’s the same concept but a young cast.” It’s unclear if Nicolas Cage will be reprising his role as Benjamin Franklin Gates in the Disney Plus series in some capacity. The new theatrical movie would have the same cast as the first two movies, Bruckheimer said.

Owkin raises $25 million as it builds a secure network for healthcare analysis and research

Imagine a model of collaborative research and development among hospitals, pharmaceutical companies, universities and other research institutions where no one shared any actual data.

That’s the dream of the new New York-based startup Owkin, which has raised $25 million in fresh financing from investors, including Bpifrance Large Venture, Cathay Innovation and MACSF (the French Pension Fund for Clinicians), alongside previous investors GV, F-Prime Capital and Eight Roads.

The company’s pitch is that data scientists, clinical doctors, academics and pharmaceutical companies can all log in to the virtual lab that Owkin calls the Owkin Studio.

In that virtual environment, all parties can access anonymized data sets and models exclusively to refine their own research and development and studies to ensure that the most cutting-edge insights into novel biomarkers, mechanisms of action and predictive models inform the work that all of the relevant parties are doing.

The ultimate goal, the company said, is to improve patient outcomes.

In its quest to get more companies and institutions to open up and share information — with the promise that the information can’t be extracted or used in a way that isn’t allowed by the owners of the data — Owkin is replicating work that other companies are pursuing in fields ranging from healthcare to financial services and beyond.

The Israeli company Qedit has developed similar technologies for the financial services industry, and Sympatic, a recent graduate from one of the recent batches of Techstars companies, is working on a similar technology for the healthcare industry.

Owkin makes money by enabling remote access to the data sets for pharmaceutical companies and licensing the models developed by universities to those companies. It’s a way for the company to entice researchers to join the platform and provide another revenue stream for research institutions who have seen their funding decline over the last 40 years.

“We have a huge loop of academic universities that have access to the data and are developing algorithms and we share data,” said the company’s chief executive Dr. Thomas Clozel. “At the end what it helps is developing better drugs.”

The investment from Owkin’s new and existing investors takes the company to $55 million in total capital raised through the extension of its Series A round. In all, the round totaled $52 million, Clozel said.

“We are exactly where we need to be because it’s about privacy and privacy is more important than ever before,” said Clozel.

The COVID-19 epidemic has emphasized the need for closer collaboration among different corporations and research institutions, and that has also increased demand for the company’s technology. “It touches everything… We have access to the right data sets and centers to build the best models for COVID,” said Clozel. “We’re lucky to have the right traction before the COVID happens and we have the right research that has been done.”

In fact, the company has launched the Covid-19 Open AI Consortium (COAI), and is using its platform to advance collaborative research and accelerate clinical development of effective treatments for patients infected with the coronavirus, the company said. All of its findings will be shared with the global medical and scientific communities.

The initial focus on the research is on cardiovascular complications in COVID-19 patients in collaboration with CAPACITY, an international registry working with over 50 centers worldwide, the company said. Other areas of research will include patient outcomes and triage, and the prediction and characterization of immune response, according to Owkin.

“Since we first backed Owkin in 2017, we have been sharing its vision to apply AI to fighting one of the most dreadful diseases on earth: cancer,” said Jacky Abitbol, a partner at Cathay Innovation. “Owkin has risen to become a leader in digital health, we are proud to grow our investment in the company to fuel its ambition to pioneer AI for medical research, while preserving patient-privacy and data security.”

The new $1,799 13-inch MacBook Pro is up to 16% faster than the base model

Apple announced the new 13-inch MacBook Pro a few days ago, and we are already getting benchmark scores that compare the performance of the new generation with the old.

Reported by MacRumors, the new $1799 configuration of the 13-inch MacBook Pro is bringing some much-improved performance when compared to its predecessor or current base model.

The outlet notes that the new base model 13-inch MacBook Pro retains the same 8th-generation Intel chips and, besides the new Magic Keyboard and upgraded base storage, does not get much of a performance boost.

"Priced at $1,299, the base model 13-inch MacBook Pro remains powered by the same 1.4GHz quad-core 8th-generation Core i5 processor as the previous generation, with average single-core and multi-core scores of 927 and 3,822 respectively."

However, upgrading to the $1,799 configuration gets you the latest 10th-generation Intel Core i5 processor, which boosts performance by over sixteen percent when compared to the base model. It is also fourteen percent faster than the previous $1,799 configuration.

"By comparison, the $1,799 configuration of the 13-inch MacBook Pro is equipped with a 2.0GHz quad-core 10th-generation Core i5 processor, with an average single-core and multi-core scores of 1,236 and 4,455 respectively. Accordingly, the $1,799 configuration is up to 16.5 percent faster than the $1,299 base model ... the new $1,799 model is also up to 14 percent faster than the 2.4GHz quad-core 8th-generation Core i5 configuration that it replaced."

MacRumors says that not enough benchmarks have been run to get a good understanding of how much faster the new 13-inch MacBook Pro performs when it is maxed out, but Apple says owners can expect up to 2.8X performance.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro brings the Magic Keyboard from the 16-inch MacBook Pro, doubles the base storage from the previous generation, and gives the option to upgrade to Intel's latest 10th generation processors.

DXOMARK says iPhone 11 selfie camera is great, but has focus issues

Eight months after the iPhone 11 was released, DXOMark has published its full review of the front "selfie" camera of the phone.

The iPhone 11 front-facing camera has earned a score of 91 (92 for photo, 92 for video) from DXOMARK, with the outlet saying that the lens delivers "decent performance but does not quite make it onto our current top ten list of smartphone front cameras". Keep in mind that DXOMARK's grading system does not end with 100. As the quality of smartphone cameras continues to increase, they will begin to pass that mark.

The largest issue that DXOMARK found with the camera was the fixed-focus lens of the iPhone 11. Subjects shooting at longer distances, like with a selfie stick, would become more out of focus when compared to some of the other selfie cameras that they tested.

"With an overall DXOMARK Selfie score of 91, the Apple iPhone 11 front camera delivers a decent performance but does not quite make it onto our current top ten list of smartphone front cameras. Given that the iPhone 11's front camera specifications (provided by Apple) are identical to those of the top-end iPhone 11 Pro Max, it should not come as a surprise that the overall results are very similar between the two models. This said, there are a few differences—the main one being focus distance. The fixed-focus lens of our iPhone 11 test device focuses slightly closer than the lens on the Pro Max, which results in subjects at longer shooting distances (for example, when shooting with a selfie stick) being out of focus."

DXOMark does say that the iPhone 11's selfie camera performs well when it comes to color and exposure. However, the fixed-focus lens does make it a less capable performer when trying to take group selfies. For those who really want the highest quality possible for those scenarios, they'll have to upgrade to the iPhone 11 Pro Max.

"Overall, the Apple iPhone 11 is a capable option for selfie shooters, with its front camera delivering nice colors and good exposure in most situations. On the downside, image output can be quite noisy and the fixed-focus lens, which is geared towards closer focusing distances, means the camera is not ideal for users who work with longer selfie sticks or who shoot a lot of group selfies. But the focus issue is the only real disadvantage when compared to the iPhone 11 Pro Max, so if you mainly care about the front camera and tend to capture most of your selfies at close distance, the less-expensive iPhone 11 is a real alternative to its pricey top-end sister model."

Clearview AI to stop selling controversial facial recognition app to private companies

Controversial facial recognition provider Clearview AI says it will no longer sell its app to private companies and non-law enforcement entities, according to a legal filing first reported on Thursday by BuzzFeed News. It will also be terminating all contracts, regardless of whether the contracts are for law enforcement purposes or not, in the state of Illinois.

Much of the cast of Community will reunite for a virtual table read to support COVID-19 relief, according to Variety. The table read and a fan Q&A will be live streamed on the Community YouTube channel on May 18th at 5PM ET.

Actors Donald Glover, Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Yvette Nicole Brown, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, and Ken Jeong, as well as Community creator Dan Harmon, will all participate in the table read, reports Variety. They will be doing a read of the episode “Cooperative Polygraphy” from the show’s fifth season. The live stream will raise money for José Andrés’ World Central Kitchen and Frontline Foods.

How to complete week two of the Pokémon Go Throwback Challenge event

Get ready, trainers!

Pokémon Go's latest event, Throwback Challenge 2020, is here, and it's going to be a busy month for all you Pokémon Trainers! Each week will feature new Timed Research, and we here at iMore have all the details for week two — Johto Timed Research!

What is a Throwback Challenge?

Throwback Challenges are kind of like Special Research, only with the added difficulty of being timed. When you log in during a Throwback Challenge week, you will gain the Timed Research line in your Today View. From there, you can complete the research over a set period of time, after which anything left incomplete will disappear.

Each week in May 2020 will feature a different Timed Research line, and completing them all will unlock an additional line during the first week of June. The weeks are supposed to begin each Friday at 1 p.m. local time. The first week in Kanto just wrapped up on May 8, 2020 and now we're moving into week two in the Johto region.

Throwback Challenge 2020: Johto Timed Research

This week's special Timed Research line dropped early and is available now. It includes a lot of Pokémon from Gen II in the Johto region. We have Pokémon reward encounters for every step, as well as for a few of the individual tasks, and more of these Pokémon than not have the potential to be Shiny. Nearly every step of this Timed Research line can be completed without ever leaving home, and all of them can be completed solo. The only task that might require leaving the house is hatching an egg.

Step One

Catch a Flying type Pokémon for 500 Stardust.
Catch three Grass, Water, or Fire type Pokémon for 10 Poké Balls.
Send a gift to a friend for a Dunsparce* encounter

Step Two

Play with your Buddy Pokémon for a Spinarak encounter.
Give your Buddy Pokémon three treats for five Razz Berries.

Step Three

Make three Great Throws for a Charged TM.

Step Five

Take three snapshots with your Buddy Pokémon for a Shuckle* encounter.

Completion Rewards: Hitmontop encounter, one Silver Pinap Berry, two Golden Razz Berries.

Step Six

Catch an Electric type Pokémon for an Incense.
Power up Pokémon three times for a Mareep* enounter.
Catch a Steel type Pokémon for 500 Stardust.

Completion Rewards: Skarmory* encounter, two Silver Pinap Berries, one Golden Razz Berry.

Step Seven

Evolve a Pokémon for a King's Rock.
Catch a Water type Pokémon for a Gligar* encounter.
Catch an Ice type Pokémon for 500 Stardust.

Completion Rewards: Piloswine* encounter, one Silver Pinap Berry, two Golden Razz Berries.

Step Eight

Take a snapshot of an Ice type Pokémon for a Dragon Scale.
Battle another Trainer for 10 Ultra Balls.
Power up Pokémon six times for 500 Stardust.

Completion Rewards: Donphan enounter, two Silver Pinap Berries, one Golden Razz Berry.

Step Nine

Autocompleted for 3000 XP
Autocompleted for 3000 XP

Completion rewards: Ho-Oh* encounter with the event exclusive move Earthquake, and five Rare Candies.

Bonuses

To help you complete these Timed Research tasks, the following features and bonuses will be in effect all week:

Pokémon from the Johto region will be spawning more frequently, including Dunsparce and Skarmory.
Pokémon from the Johto region will also be in more Raids.
Pokémon from the Johto region will be featured in 7 KM Eggs, including Chinchou, Yanma, Girafarig, Pineco, Dunsparce, Gligar, Shuckle, Skarmory, and Phanpy.
PIkachu wearing an Umbreon hat will be available.
Shiny Dunsparce will be introduced.
Event-exclusive Field Research will reward players with encounters featuring Pokémon originally found in the Johto region.
Catch and Raid Stardust will be doubled all week.
