Patentes desde el más allá

Steve Jobs Lives on at the Patent Office — Desde su muerte en 2011 Steve Jobs ha recibido 141 patentes.

You can now buy HP's Chromebook 14 with a 1080p touchscreen

We've said that the mediocre screen on HP's Chromebook 14 "kills the whole appeal of an otherwise solid Chromebook," and it seems HP may have come to the same realization. Recently, HP introduced the option to purchase its Chromebook 14 with a 1080p touchscreen. So not only is it sharper than the default panel (and perfect for Netflix), but you get the benefit of using Chrome OS through touch — if that's something you'd prefer versus a trackpad. Just as you'd expect, the better screen comes at a higher price.

The Full HD Chromebook 14 runs $439.99, but you're also getting double the RAM: this model includes 4GB compared to the regular's 2GB. It's still got the same Tegra K1 chipset inside, which should prove ample for most tasks you'd...

Why do so many airports have rocking chairs?

I first noticed the rocking chairs a few years ago while flying out of Seattle. It seemed like a quirky touch not out of character at an airport with an abundance of art and whose drinking fountains play amplified gargling sounds. Then I noticed them in Durham. Then in San Diego.

If I had to pick places I’d expect to see rocking chairs, front porches, living rooms, and pretty much anywhere else would rank far above cavernous and stark airport terminals, yet that’s probably where I’m most likely to see them. And while I could imagine an aggressively whimsical designer somewhere throwing a bunch of rocking chairs in a terminal, I had a hard time seeing how they’d sprung up in so many airports across the country. Why rocking chairs? Where...

Crayola's New Coloring Books Bring Your Creations To Life With an App

Crayola's New Coloring Books Bring Your Creations To Life With an App

Coloring books might seem like an antiquated plaything given all the drawing and painting apps available for tablets, but learning to master a colored pencil or crayon and stay within the lines helps develop hand-eye coordination. So instead of trying to convince kids to put down their tablets (or phones) Crayola's instead created a line of enhanced coloring books that come to life with the help of augmented reality after they've been colored.

An 8-minute video explaining everything good and bad about Gremlins

Does It Hold Up is a chance to re-experience childhood favorites of books, movies, TV shows, video games, and other cultural phenomenon decades later. Have they gotten better like a fine wine, or are we drinking cork?

Every kid has a favorite stuffed animal or security blanket. For my childhood neighbor and best friend Alex, it was a stuffed replica of Gizmo, the fuzzy-faced critter from the children's horror film Gremlins. Released a year before either of us were born, a Christmas didn't go by without a screening of the film at Alex's home. I remember the popcorn, the Cherry Coke, and the crustless sandwiches, prepared by his mom; but the movie, the story of a young man and his dangerous pet, is hidden beneath a nostalgic haze.

An Indonesian beetle just joined the list of animals named after David Attenborough

It's becoming increasingly clear that Sir David Attenborough's name will live on long after we're all dead. And that's not just because of the broadcaster's enormous contributions to wildlife television and science as a whole. Rather, Attenborough's name will live on for centuries to come because close to 10 species of animals and plants have been named after him. A grasshopper, a tree, and a type of shrimp are all part of Attenborough's increasingly large list of namesakes. And now a newly discovered beetle is the latest member of the Attenborough species roster.

The best e-reader you can buy

Here’s how I read on a tablet: I open the Kindle app. I read for somewhere between four and nine seconds. A notification pops up: I have a new email or someone tweeted a funny link at me. I tap on that notification, and check out whatever’s come in. I check Twitter, and then maybe I’ll just play a quick game of FIFA before I get to my subway stop. Wait, was I doing something?

Here’s how I read on an e-reader: I open it up, and I read. And I keep reading.

Sure, it’s a device with exactly zero unique functionality, but an e-reader is perhaps a technologically inclined consumer’s last plausible defense against the onslaught of notifications and distractions that every other device has become. It’s the best way we have to get lost in...
