Steve Martin and Carl Sagan inspired Bill Nye's 'Science Guy' character

Few scientists have captured the imagination of children like Bill Nye. In a new short for NOVA's Secret Life of Scientists and Engineers, Nye discusses the comedic and scientific inspirations behind his popular 90s PBS Kids show Bill Nye the Science Guy. After winning a Steve Martin lookalike contest in Seattle, Nye went on to write comedy. While working both as an engineer and a stand-up comic, Nye developed the character for his show. Like other prominent scientists, Nye received inspiration from Carl Sagan, who told him to "focus on pure science" for his young audience. "After you get laughs on stage it's addicting," Nye says. "If you want to entertain a kid of any age, you make it funny."

Nye continues to be a prominent scientific...

How Much Longer Do I Have to Wait For My Wonderful Self-Winding Swatch?

Forget Bitcoin banking. One intrepid 4chan user has found a newer, cooler way to bank: spending his entire paycheck on pre-ordering games from GameStop, and then "withdrawing" money when he needs to by canceling one of his pre-orders.

"GameStops are just as prevalent as banks in my town and I work at a mall so it's even more convenient than running an errand to the bank or using an ATM and getting charged," the anonymous poster writes. And in lieu of credit card or bank membership rewards, the poster has never missed exclusive launch content for any game he's been interested in. As with most things posted anonymously online, it's unclear if the poster's story is true or totally make-believe. But that doesn't make his scheme any less...

3D-printed splint used to help a baby breathe again

3D printing doesn't have to be limited to tchotchkes. The production method has already proven its utility in surgery, and now a doctor has used 3D printing to help save a baby's life. The baby was born with a condition known as tracheomalacia that left him with a trachea susceptible to collapsing and cutting off his air supply. University of Michigan doctor Glenn Green used a 3D-printed "splint" to support the trachea in an emergency procedure, and so far the results have been extremely promising. NPR has an article on the procedure, and the doctor and his 3D-printing partner held an AMA on Reddit last week to answer some questions, including details on how the splint is designed to dissolve after three years.
