This Ping Pong-Playing Robot Arm Is Probably Better Than Most of Us

Forget convertibles: Where are the attractive, low-cost, all-day laptops?

Though $1,000 convertibles probably make for larger profit margins, we think the PC industry would be better served by making low-cost notebooks running existing, battery-efficient gear. Oh, and customers would win too.

Lyft assembles massive funding round to take on Uber

Documents filed last week reveal that ridesharing service Lyft has started work on a $150 million round of funding, amassing $80 million of it so far from big names including Andreesen Horowitz. Though Uber has unquestionably grabbed the top slot in the burgeoning car dispatch industry, Lyft's pink mustaches — attached to the front of drivers' cars — have grabbed enough attention in many big cities to become well-known. Uber competes directly with Lyft through its UberX service, which employs private drivers with their own cars to effectively serve as cabs at a lower rate.

The round puts Lyft's valuation around $700 million. That pales to Uber's recent $3.5 billion price tag, but the new funding should give Lyft some runway to...

Greetings from a rainy (but always fun) Austin, TX. As is the case leading up to every SXSW, many wonder what will be the breakout app. As someone who works in, invests in, and writes about mobile, the app that’s come up the most in conversation, offline and online, is no “secret.” It’s not too surprising given Secret launched publicly at the right time (a little over a month ago),… Read More

Liam Neeson issues 'Taken'-style threat to Vladimir Putin on 'SNL'

Last night's Saturday Night Live had Lena Dunham taking the hosting duties — but the cold open belonged to Liam Neeson. The Taken star reprised his well-known role standing next to Jay Pharoah as President Obama, discussing the developing situation in Ukraine and warning Russian president Vladimir Putin that Neeson has "a very particular set of skills."

The skit ends with a video ribbing Putin's reputation for doing outlandishly "manly" things, with Pharoah posing shirtless on a horse, wrestling a bear, and handily defeating an arm wrestling opponent. See the full clip below.

This is how supercomputers cook: IBM’s Watson dreams up creative dishes

A master chef can think about a combination of two, maybe three ingredients at a time. Watson, the same IBM supercomputer that won Jeopardy in 2011, can crunch through a quintillion. That's a one and 18 zeroes, as the IBM researchers like to say. But does that make their computer a good cook?

For about two years, IBM's cognitive computing group has been working to apply Watson's vast processing ability to food. The system analyzed about 35,000 existing recipes and about 1,000 chemical flavor compounds, which allows it to make educated guesses about which ingredient combinations will delight and, just as importantly, surprise. From there, it tries to encourage unconventional combinations — like chocolate, coffee, and garlic — in...

Medium to launch reading app for iPhone this week

The New York Times' Bits Blog reports that blogging platform Medium will unveil an iPhone app this week, its first mobile app since launching in 2012. The app is said to be strictly for reading Medium posts — "not yet" for writing — which would jibe with Medium's focus on longer-form, high-quality content not well suited for composition on a phone. Medium's site already works very well on a mobile browser, so the open question is how the app will differentiate itself and what additional features it might offer over a simple bookmark.

Medium's first app comes weeks after founder (and Twitter board member) Ev Williams raised a $25 million round for the company that was earmarked for a new San Francisco office, hires, and...
