Intel unveils the Thunderbolt 4 spec, which AMD believes it can use

Intel unveiled Thunderbolt 4 on Wednesday, tightening the existing I/O specification for docks, some displays, external storage and GPUs. Bandwidth remains unchanged from Thunderbolt 3, though executives said to expect new types of docks and longer cables. AMD, which has traditionally never associated Thunderbolt with its Ryzen platforms, pooh-poohed Thunderbolt demand but said it meets the spec’s security restrictions.

Thunderbolt 4 will debut later this year as part of Intel’s “Tiger Lake” CPU platform, as Intel originally announced during CES in January. We now know it will support 40Gbps throughput, but with tighter minimum specs. Thunderbolt 4 will guarantee that a pair of 4K displays will work with a Thunderbolt dock, and require Thunderbolt 4-equipped PCs to charge on at least one Thunderbolt port. Thunderbolt PCs will be able to connect to either “compact” or “full” docks with up to four Thunderbolt ports. Longer Thunderbolt cables will be possible, too.

Quibi reportedly lost 90 percent of early users after their free trials expired

Illustration by Grayson Blackmon / The Verge

Streaming service Quibi only managed to convert a little under 10 percent of its early wave of users into paying subscribers, says mobile analytics firm Sensor Tower. According to the firm’s new report on Quibi’s early growth, the short-form video platform signed up about 910,000 users in its first few days back in April. Of those users, only about 72,000 stuck around after the three-month free trial, indicating the app had about an 8 percent conversion rate.

That’s not too bad. But compare that to the streaming video industry’s most successful debut of the last few years, Disney Plus, and the resulting picture is a grim one for Quibi, which has struggled both to find a hit among its mobile-centric shows and gain traction with its...

Lightricks launches Quickart, a one-tap photo editor for the iPhone

Turn your photos into art with one tap.

What you need to know

  • Lightricks has launched a new app called Quickart.
  • The app lets you quickly apply digital effects to your photos.
  • Lightricks is the developer behind other photo apps like Facetune and Enlight.

Lightricks is the developer behind popular photography apps like Facetune and Enlight Photofox and now, the company is out with a new app to make digital art easy for beginners.

The company has launched Quickart, which it touts as a "one-tap photo editor" for the iPhone and iPad. Quickart allows users to import their photos and then apply interesting effects with ease and without the need for any editing experience.

Built to provide audiences with a fast, easy way to make imaginative creations that express the world through their eyes, Quickart solves a challenge many face when working to create from a blank canvas: bringing ideas to life with just a tap—no previous editing skills required.

Quickart Man Woods

Zeev Farbman, Co-Founder and CEO at Lightricks, says that the company built the app in four months after recognizing the demand for an easy to use photo editing app tailored for the effects beginners were looking for.

"During the global shelter-in-place, we saw an increased demand for creative artistic-expression tools in our apps that were geared towards the casual photo-editor. After surveying our users across the globe on the type of content they were creating, we built Quickart to expand on the capabilities and offerings being utilized by our community of creators, working around the clock to create it in a mere four months. Utilizing some of the most popular aspects of our advanced photo-editing app Photofox, Quickart delivers a simple, yet powerful and fun artistic experience. The app removes the barrier to entry for individuals without a professional understanding of photo-editing so that absolutely anyone can create."

I downloaded the app and played around with a few photos and effects and, I have to say, it worked quite well. For those interested in more creative photo editing but don't want to devote the time and money to learn things like Photoshop, it's a great fit.

You can download Quickart for the iPhone and iPad for free from the App Store. You can also upgrade to Quickart Pro, which unlocks all of the different effects in the app, for a monthly ($5.99), yearly ($19.99), or one-time purchase ($59.99).

Analyst says iPhone 12 will cost more even without charger and headphones

A higher price and no charger in the box? That's crazy talk!

What you need to know

  • Jeff Pu believes the iPhone 12 will cost more than the iPhone 11.
  • The analyst predicts a $50 price increase due to new features for the phone.
  • An increase would be notable considering the rumor Apple will not ship a charger with the phone.

While some analysts and rumormongers are predicting that Apple will drop the price of the iPhone 12 because of the potential lack of a charger and headphones in the box, one analyst is running in the opposite direction.

Reported by MacRumors, Jeff Pu, an analyst at Chinese research firm GF Securities, is predicting that Apple will actually raise the price of the iPhone 12. The analyst says that new features such as 5G and OLED displays will drive the price of the new phone up by about $50.

In a research note provided to MacRumors, analyst Jeff Pu forecasted that iPhone 12 pricing will start at $749 for a new 5.4-inch model, an increase of $50 over the base model iPhone 11 for $699. Pu said the price is primarily attributed to the addition of 5G and an OLED display on all iPhone 12 models, whereas the base iPhone 11 has an LCD.

Pu believes that, despite the rumor circulating that Apple will remove the wall charger and headphones from the box and sell those accessories separately, demand for the iPhone 12 will remain the same.

Due to 5G, Pu believes that the price increase will be "accepted by consumers" and "will not affect demand," but the move would generate controversy nonetheless if the EarPods and wall charger are removed from the box as rumored.

With a $50 increase from the iPhone 11, the base model 5.4-inch iPhone 12 would cost $749 without a charger or headphones. Apple is, however, expected to keep the lightning cable in the box that the iPhone ships with.

Other analysts and those in the rumor game have said that the 5.4-inch iPhone will start at $649, a whole $100 less than Pu's prediction. We'll have to wait until September to know for sure which direction Apple is going.
