Microsoft Built the Surface Laptop 3 for Easy Repairs, But Don’t You Dare Try It Yourself
This week Microsoft revealed a whole bunch of new hardware. There were groundbreaking reveals, like the Surface Duo and Surface Neo. There were also some incremental updates to existing devices.
Take the Surface Laptop 3, for example. There’s a new 15-inch model that ships with an AMD Ryzen 7 processor. It’s got a USB Type-C port. It also has a modular design that makes it easy to disassemble and reassemble.
That may not necessarily the sexiest feature, but it’s one that is increasingly critical as companies like Microsoft look for ways to build more sustainable products.
It’s a welcome bit of news in an era when a lot of manufacturers think thin and light laptops are best crammed into enclosures that are frustrating to open at best and impossible to open without damaging at worst.
Apart from just meaning that the Surface Laptop 3 is a breeze to fix, its modular construction also means that some components (like the SSD) are easy to upgrade.
There’s a catch, however. Only authorized hands have Microsoft’s blessing to crack open the Surface Laptop 3. Do it yourself and you’ll void your warranty (unless, of course, you happen to be a technician employed by one of the MS-authorized repair companies).
Thomas B. Pahl, former Acting Director of the FTC’s Bureau of Consumer Protection, said last fall that “provisions that tie warranty coverage to the use of particular products or services harm both consumers who pay more for them as well as the small businesses who offer competing products and services.”
Several states are also working on right-to-repair legislation. Hopefully they’ll start getting passed and companies like Microsoft can put their energy into building even better products. You know, instead of wasting it shaking fists and stomping around because we want to be able to tinker with something that we bought with our own hard-earned cash.

CollegeHumor Dropout Is Premium Streaming Internet Comedy
We’ve just hit the halfway point of New York Comic Con, and I decided to spend Friday night not waiting in line for a panel or demo, but just hanging out at a nerdy game show. CollegeHumor’s Um, Actually is a glorious celebration of pedantic nerd semantics, a trivia show about correcting the most minor technicalities in meaningless fictional lore. So host Mike Trapp admitted that bringing such a format to a Comic Con audience was dumping blood in the water for sharks.
But it was very funny! Most (but not all) of the questions stumped me and left me laughing in the process. Who knew so many people could tell the difference between specific sci-fi siren noises or anime where guys merge their wives with dogs. And since Um, Actually regularly airs on CollegeHumor Dropout, we’re once again sharing our review of that streaming service.
CollegeHumor, provider of fine internet comedy videos targeted towards kids in higher education, is old enough to be in college itself. When I was in college, film school friends of mine interned there. What I mean is that even with the internet’s ability to make everything feel somehow less legitimate and perpetually juvenile, CollegeHumor is serious institutional funny business.
And so despite the sketch comedy trappings, it was sobering when the company put out this video describing just how devalued internet comedy videos are these days as ad sales on raunchy content dry up, Facebook misrepresents its views numbers, and invasive sponsored commerce content reigns supreme. It’s a problem for the entire media industry. But that video wasn’t just a depressing economics lesson. It was also an announcement of CollegeHumor’s solution: Dropout, an expertly named new streaming TV service for premium online laughs.
For $4 per month after the week free trial, Dropout gives you uncensored ad-free access to CollegeHumor’s treasure trove of videos and sketches the team has built up over the years. The sheer amount of content makes you realize how ripe the company was for a streaming service, even if many videos will still be available for free elsewhere. I would’ve liked to see brilliant Black Mirror spoof Bad Internet here, which is presumably still tied up exclusively with YouTube Red. But you can watch pretty much any other CollegeHumor classic from Jake and Amir to Pete Holmes’s Batman impression to a multi-part parody of The Shining.
Since you are being charged though, Dropout fortunately gives you a selection of exclusive shows to watch as well. The beauty of sketch comedy with limited resources is that strong funny writing is more important than expensive production value. But these Dropout shows do feel more premium and generally feature longer runtime. They look like they make good use of your cash.
There’s an expanded series based on Honey Boo Boo parody Precious Plum. Cartoon Hell takes viewer suggestions for animations and illustrations. And my favorite show Um, Actually is a trivia game show about correcting pedantic nerd minutiae. CollegeHumor alum Adam Conover of Adam Ruins Everything shows up in the first episode.
The videos are the main draw but there are also some cool almost experimental extras hanging around the margins of Dropout. I read some truly bizarre original comics that appealed to me as a Dorkly fan, including a gritty reboot for a cheeseburger-headed fast food crimefighter. His life took a dark turn when his breaded chicken lover was murdered.
There are also little short stories that take the form of text messaging logs, like a chat with a political activism AI bot. And in a cool leveraging of existing proven technology, your subscriptions grants you access to the Dropout private Discord to hang out with creators and the rest of the community.
As far as actually using Dropout goes it’s mostly fine. Browsing through shows is easy enough and I appreciate that you can filter not just by shows and formats but by what actors appear in what sketches. It’s a cool transparent way to put the talent of the performers front and center. But right now you can only watch in a browser. Mobile apps aren’t finished yet. More troubling, trying to scrub through videos or stop auto-play would frequently log me out of the whole service which can get really annoying with the longer videos.
People should be able to make a living being funny on the internet. So if CollegeHumor’s Dropout helps more comedians achieve that, even with its launch technical issues and modest initial original library, then it’s already worth it. Because there’s nothing funny about capitalism ruining comedy for the rest of us.

Brown Sugar has all of the classic Blaxploitation movies you could want and then some. It’s niche, but it’s one of the most impressive niche libraries we’ve seen.

Marvel Assembles Its Newest Video Games At NYCC
Marvel may not dominate video games the way they do comics and movies, but they sure are trying. Spider-Man on PlayStation 4 was one of the biggest games of last year. And Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 is dumb, but it has Blade, so how bad can it really be. At this year’s New York Comic Con, Marvel assembled its newest slate of games for us to play.
Even without Capcom, Marvel is a player in the fighting game space with Marvel Contest of Champions. Apparently that free-to-play mobile game has been humming along for years, amassing over 150 characters and billions of matches played. And now developer Kabam is making the battle even bigger with Marvel Realm of Champions coming in 2020.
Based on the Battleworld conceit of the recent Secret Wars crossover, Realm of Champions is an upcoming mobile game set in the same universe as Contest of Champions. But instead of a fighting game, this is a multiplayer action RPG. Set in a weird future alternate reality ruled by various barons, players pledge alliance to one of several superheroic dynasties. Go with House of Iron and you’ll get an armored outfit to aid A.I. Tony Stark. Side with Wakanda and Queen Shuri gives you your own Dora Milaje Black Panther armor. This lets you customize your character and team up with others while still basically playing as the superhero you want. Plus the reworking of characters injects some nice diversity. Get ready for President Peggy Carter and Madame Web Gwen Stacy.
For a more traditional Marvel tale, albeit told in a brand new format, we learned some more news about Iron Man VR. After playing a demo for ourselves, we’re already pretty confident that Iron Man gameplay translates pretty well to PlayStation VR. So aside from details like Josh Keaton voicing Stark, Ghost being the main antagonist, and Adi Granov designing various armors you choose in the garage, the biggest announcement was just the release date. Iron Man VR arrive on February 28, 2020.
And a few months later in May 2020, Earth’s Mightiest Bootleg Heroes assemble in Square Enix’s Marvel’s Avengers. I’m not going to lie, fam. I played the demo and wasn’t impressed. We’ll share more in-depth impressions later. But aside from some technically impressive visuals, I found the combat repetitive and the cinematic set pieces hollow. Who thought an Avengers game should take cues from Destiny?
But we did learn something pretty exciting about the roster. Alongside Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, Hulk, and Black Widow Marvel revealed that Kamala Khan’s Ms. Marvel also joins the team as a young point of view character. Finally, someone Nolan North or Troy Baker can’t voice. The plot sees AIM stepping in to help the world through science after the Avengers disband following a tragedy they maybe caused. But AIM’s “help” involves hunting down Inhumans like Kamala who’ve begun developing “dangerous” powers. We just hope her stretchy limbs look less gross in her own upcoming Disney+ show than they do in this realistic video game.

Walmart sells ModCloth just two years after buying it
Walmart is selling off women’s clothing company and online retailer ModCloth, just two years after acquiring it. The brand will now be a part of investment firm Go Global Retail, though it will continue to operate independently.
“We expect they will continue in the same direction as before,” Christian Feuer, managing director of Go Global Retail, told The Verge. “I don’t think the customer will see a change. If they do, I hope they’ll be happy with what they see.”

Less than two weeks ahead of the Pixel 4 flagship smartphone’s debut, Google is reportedly pulling the plug on a controversial “field research” program that offered subjects in US cities a $5 gift certificate in exchange for a scan of their face — after a New York Daily News report that one Google contracting agency was actively targeting homeless people in Atlanta and tricking unwitting college students into participating.
Originally, the company told us, the idea was to make sure the Pixel 4’s new Face Unlock feature would recognize a diverse array of faces, which could keep it from being biased against people of color — a legitimate concern for facial recognition tech.

Some iPhone 6S units aren’t turning on, so Apple launched a repair program

Apple has posted notice of a new repair program to address an issue that prevents some iPhone 6S and 6S Plus phones from turning on.
“Apple has determined that certain iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus devices may not power on due to a component that may fail," the page for the program says. The program is wordily called "iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus Service Program for No Power Issues."
It does not affect all iPhone 6S and 6S Plus units; rather, it affects phones in a certain serial number range that corresponds to some handsets sold between October of 2018 and August of 2019. The iPhone 6S was discontinued in North America throughout that window, but the company continued to make and sell it for some other regions.

Federal judge says nobody cares about the iPhone’s notch
The iPhone’s notch may not be the prettiest thing in the world, but there’s now a lawsuit over it, which alleges that Apple’s advertised screen size and resolution for the iPhone X, XS, and XS Max count pixels that aren’t actually there due to the notch. A federal judge hearing the case, in an all-time great quote, thinks this may not be a big deal: “There doesn’t really seem to be anyone in America who seems to be concerned about it,” he said, according to Law360.
Apple argues that it already explains how it measures screen size on its packaging, according to Law360, and has been trying to get the case dismissed since March. The plaintiffs are hoping to make it into a nationwide class-action lawsuit, but it hasn’t been certified yet —...
