Parasite wins Best Picture, making Oscar history

Parasite ended its award show sweep this season by taking home Best Picture, making it the first non-English speaking film to win the Academy’s most prestigious award.

Bong Joon-ho’s movie about a lower-income family who infiltrates a wealthy household, only to learn a much darker secret, has led the awards season. The movie scored multiple awards for writer and director Bong during the evening including Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best International Feature Film. Although the cast wasn’t recognized individually, they were awarded the SAG award for Best Performance by an Ensemble Cast in a film.

Parasite is also the first film from a South Korean director to win the Best Picture, and the first with a primarily Asian cast. P...

Taika Waititi slams Apple’s MacBook keyboards after winning first Oscar

92nd Annual Academy Awards - Press Room Photo by Jeff Kravitz/FilmMagic

Speaking with journalists after winning his first Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay, Jojo Rabbit and Thor: Ragnarok director Taika Waititi had other things on his mind. When asked what he thought writers should be demanding in the next round of discussions with producers, Waititi put Apple’s controversial laptop keyboards on blast.

“Apple needs to fix those keyboards,” he said. “They are impossible to write on — they’ve gotten worse. It makes me want to go back to PCs. Because PC keyboards, the bounce-back for your fingers is way better. Hands up who still uses a PC? You know what I’m talking about. It’s a way better keyboard. Those Apple keyboards are horrendous.”

Quibi continues attempt to explain what it does with series of Oscars ads

Quibi’s 30-second commercial during last week’s Super Bowl left many people asking: “What the hell is Quibi?” Tonight’s series of ads at the Oscars is Quibi’s best try to answer that question.

There are five ads in total, and all take place in bizarre situations. An astronaut in space nearly out of air; an asteroid about to hit earth; a cowboy being tied to train tracks as a train approaches; and even a zombie outbreak. The concept of each ad essentially boils down to people having time to watch a single Quibi episode, even in the threat of danger, because they’re so short. The ads were uploaded to Quibi’s YouTube account prior to the show.

Quibi, the short form video streaming service from famous Hollywood executive Jeffrey Katzenberg...

Samsung outs its new folding Galaxy flip phone in a surprising Oscar ad

The first Unpacked event of 2020 doesn't kick off for another 36 hours, but Samsung is too excited to keep quiet. In a surprise TV ad rolling moments after Brad Pitt won his first Oscar for Best Supporting Actor, Samsung took the wraps off its next folding phone.

The whimsical 15-second ad was set to French swing song Comic Strip by Serge Gainsbourg and features numerous shots of the new phone opening and closing. We didn't learn much that we didn't already know, though we did get to see the tint front display in action., so we know for sure you'll be able to answer or dismiss incoming calls. We also got a clear look at the dual camera, as well as the phone's purple or black.

Samsung aired a Galaxy Z Flip commercial before it even announced the phone

Image: WinFuture

It’s not just leaks that let us know what big tech companies plan to announce at their keynotes, increasingly it’s the companies themselves. Since this year’s Academy Awards fall ahead of Samsung’s February 11th Unpacked keynote, the company decided to go for a huge tease of the Galaxy Z Flip — it basically showed off the whole phone.

We are expecting Samsung to announce new Galaxy S20 phones (three of them) and the Galaxy Z Flip, a folding phone rumored to have a glass screen. The ad showed the phone sitting on a table at a 90-degree angle on its own, the better to do video chatting. It also gave us our first, best look at it folded up and it doesn’t appear to fold completely flat. The Motorola Razr, which was just released but has a...

Lutron's latest Caséta accessory helps light the way, hands-free

Latest Caséta accessory adds a hands-free way to turn on the lights.

What you need to know

  • Caséta Wireless Smart Motion Sensor is available now at Amazon.
  • Motion Sensor has a 180 degree field of view and 10 year battery life.
  • Sensor works with other Caséta accessory such as light switches and dimmers.

Announced back at CES 2020 in early January, Lutron's Caséta Wireless Smart Motion Sensor is now available for purchase on Amazon. Lutron's motion sensor gives owners of Caséta Wireless light switches and dimmers a hands-free way to turn on the lights just by entering a room.

The Caséta Wireless Smart Motion Sensor features a 180 degree field of view and passive infrared sensors that detect heat to determine activity within a room. Lutron claims that its motion sensing technology, dubbed XCT, can deliver 3x finer motion detection, making it more accurate and more responsive than offerings from competitors.

Lutron's sensor is completely wireless, connecting via RF to the company's Caséta Smart Bridge, and is powered by a small CR123 battery. Lutron states that users can expect up to 10 years of battery life with the included battery. Lutron also includes various mounting options, such as a corner bracket, in the box for easy placement around the home, but it is rated for indoor use only.

Unfortunately, it appears that the sensor does not integrate with Apple's HomeKit or other smart home platforms at this time. This limits the sensor to only working with Caséta accessories for the foreseeable future, which does put a damper on what looks to be a solid device.

In addition to the motion sensor, Lutron's upcoming Smart Wireless Repeater, which was also announced at CES, is available for pre-order on Amazon, with an estimated shipping date listed as within 1-2 months. A vacancy only variant of the motion sensor is also in the works, which is slated for release later this year.

Caséta Wireless Smart Motion Sensor

$50 at Amazon

The Caséta Wireless Smart Motion Sensor works in tandem with your switches and lamp dimmers to light the way just by entering the room. This completely wireless sensor can be placed just about anywhere indoors, and its included battery lasts up to 10 years.
