NASA releases 'Gravity'-inspired photo set ahead of the Oscars

Just in time for the Academy Awards, NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center has released a new photo set inspired by Gravity. The movie makes heavy use of computer-generated imagery, but NASA's photos show space as it really looks to the astronauts lucky enough to leave the earth's orbit.

Using photos taken over the last several years, "NASA's Real-Life Images from Space" showcases astronauts, space shuttles, and some jaw-dropping views of earth. It should look familiar to viewers of Gravity,...

A look inside the graphic design of 'Her'

Depending on your state of mind when you saw Her , you either left the theater touched by how Theodore Twombly learned about himself through love, or you were deeply concerned about a world where people are even more dependent on their smartphones. Either way, it was near impossible to ignore the striking graphic design of the future presented by the filmmakers.

Graphic designer Geoff McFetridge was largely responsible for that aesthetic in its manifestations from Samantha herself and Twombly's handwriting interface at work to a fictionalized map of Los Angeles' subway system. Gizmodo's Alissa Walker sat down with McFetridge for a radio interview on KCRW to ask about his inspirations for his vision of the future of computer interfaces,...

As a new film showcases their plight, visual effects artists will protest the Oscars

For the second consecutive year, visual effects artists are demonstrating at the Academy Awards today in protest of studio finance strategies that they say are driving them out of business. Workers are gathering at Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street in Los Angeles to protest the foreign tax credits that have put US effects studios at a disadvantage when bidding on film projects. "These subsidies are a form of corporate welfare used by Hollywood producers to game various governments against each other," the Association of Digital Artists, Professionals, & Technicians said in a statement. "At the same time, this has unknowingly cost taxpayers billions."

The protest comes amid the release of Life After Pi , a short documentary about the...

New book to profile Apple CEO Tim Cook

A new book from ex-Wall Street Journal reporter Yukari Kane will profile Apple's enigmatic CEO Tim Cook. Haunted Empire: Apple After Steve Jobs is the result of an exhaustive investigation, and will look beyond Cook's well-publicized Mountain Dew habit and fitness regime to shed light on how the "intensely private" man does business. While the book won't be available until March 18th, The Wall Street Journal has published an adapted excerpt. It offers a rare glimpse at the challenges Cook faced — and still faces — in steering a post-Jobs Apple in the right direction.

Watch Stephen Colbert lambast the NSA and Snowden at security conference

Stephen Colbert delivered his somewhat controversial keynote speech at the annual RSA security conference Friday, and took the opportunity to lambast the NSA, Edward Snowden, and Mt. Gox, and launch his own "Cloud Fog" security service. "We can trust the NSA," explains Colbert, "because without a doubt it is history's most powerful, pervasive, sophisticated surveillance agency ever to be totally pwned by a 29-year-old with a thumb drive." The full keynote isn't yet available at RSA's website, but YouTube is full of excerpts uploaded by attendees.

The elaborate cameras that filmed Jean-Claude Van Damme in 'Hard Target'

Hard Target was John Woo's first foray into the world of Hollywood movies, and it looks as though the Chinese director took full advantage of the extra budget afforded him. In the brief clip below, produced by the Los Angeles Times in 1993, you can see some of the many and elaborate moving camera set-ups that were used to shoot the film — everything from flying cameras to rotating ones, all of which helped capture star Jean-Claude Van Damme race through the hills on a motorcycle. Google, though, has no real reason to stop purchased links from shoveling nefarious software—as long as the software isn’t overtly loaded with viruses. Google makes money from any operating system connected to the Web, so long as it uses Google search.
