Mozilla pulls the plug on 'Metro' mode Firefox browser for Windows 8

Mozilla is abandoning its plans to release a touch-friendly version of its Firefox web browser for Windows 8 users. The company first revealed experimental support for Firefox in "Metro" mode back in October of 2012, and development has continued since then — though a stable version has never shipped.

Firefox Vice President Johnathan Nightingale says in a blog post that "we have to pick our battles," and a lack of demand for "Metro" mode support led to the decision. "On any given day we have, for instance, millions of people testing pre-release versions of Firefox desktop, but we’ve never seen more than 1,000 active daily users in the Metro environment," Nightingale reveals. With so few users testing the app, any release would be...

Turn any object into an instrument with 'Sound Pegs'

As a child, you may have been pretty proud of yourself for making your own chimes out of drinking glasses filled with varying levels of water. But that pales in comparison to "Sound Pegs," the new percussion instrument devised by London designer Nick Brennan: simple wooden clips that attach to and turn virtually any common household object – from books to plants to Christmas decorations – into a drum.

The story behind the 'First Kiss' viral video sensation

If you had an Internet connection this week, you probably came across "First Kiss" — a video compilation of various strangers fumbling through a few awkward, adorable moments of intimacy. But the video, which has amassed more than 52 million YouTube views, elicited a backlash from more than just cold-hearted cynics. Because it featured models, musicians, and actors promoting a clothing line, some decried "First Kiss" as, at best, slick advertising. At worst, it was derided as a total fake.

Malaysia Airlines flight may have been deliberately diverted

The disappearance of a Malaysia Airlines flight last Friday appears to be the result of deliberate action. That's according to Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak, speaking to reporters earlier today. Najib stopped short of using the word "hijacking," but instead stated that "evidence is consistent with someone acting deliberately from inside the plane," CNN reported.

George R.R. Martin knows how to stop 'Game of Thrones' from catching up to his books

Much has already been said about George R.R. Martin not having a whole lot of time to finish his A Song of Ice and Fire series before the HBO adaptation eventually catches up. (Or, if you're a more morbid member of the fandom, you're hoping hard he doesn't actually die before spring finally comes.) Now, even though he's still not your bitch, the author himself is expressing concern, telling Vanity Fair this week that the pace with which the show is moving up on him is "alarming." Not very encouraging. But, even though he's spent much of his career "trying to avoid deadlines," he has a detailed plan for how the next few season can be stretched to give him some more time. Read on at Vanity Fair , but only if you don't fear spoilers.

Google rolls out a new option to curb in-app purchases in Android games

Following a recent lawsuit, and inquiry by the European Commission about protections for in-app purchases, Google's begun offering new controls for shoppers on its Play Store to restrict how those transactions are made. A new version of the Play Store adds the option to require a password each and every time in-app purchases are made, something that provides a considerably higher amount of protection than the 30-minute window Google gives users by default. That half hour setting — which continues to be an option — means that extra purchases can be made without a password, just as long as they're within that window.
