AltConf 2020, the popular alternative to WWDC, has also been canceled

First WWDC 2020, now AltConf 2020.

What you need to know

  • AltConf 2020 has been canceled as of Monday.
  • The event served as an alternative to WWDC for those who could not get tickets.
  • They do not plan to host a virtual event in addition to the one coming from Apple.

For anyone who is familiar with WWDC, you're probably also familiar with AltConf, the Alternative Apple Developer Conference. The developer-friendly event has served as a way for those who could not get a ticket to Apple's conference to still get together during the week of WWDC.

Unfortunately, AltConf 2020 has also been canceled. The event's organizer, Rob Elkin, announced in a Medium post on Monday that they have made the decision to cancel all of AltConf 2020's events across the world.

"Unfortunately, we've come to the conclusion that it would not be prudent or safe to put on any AltConf events in 2020. It's been a tough call to make, but the safety of our team, our attendees, and the public as a whole is our most important priority."

Elkin goes on to say that, since Apple has announced that it will be bringing WWDC to an online format this year, the group does not plan to also host a virtual event.

"AltConf has always been a great addition to the WWDC week, giving attendees the opportunity to come to San Jose or one of our satellites, meet other attendees, and experience the unique experience of WWDC without the need for a ticket. However it has never been our aim to compete directly with Apple on content, and so we are not going to provide a virtual conference so that attendees can focus on the great content coming out from Apple."

The group is monitoring the situation globally and states that, if it becomes possible to host a satellite event in a safe way, they may take that opportunity. However, as the situation stands now, that is not the plan.

"AltConf 2020 was going to be one of our biggest yet, but we're happy to wait to bring some great stuff to the community in 2021."

Goldman cuts Apple stock estimates but sees rebound by end of 2020

Apple is in for some rough months ahead, but there is hope.

What you need to know

  • Goldman Sachs analyst predicts near-term revenue losses for Apple.
  • Rod Hall cites store closures and COVID-19 as the cause.
  • The analyst does believe that the company will begin to recuperate by the end of 2020.

Apple's stock, along with the rest of the stock market, has seen huge fluctuations over the last week due to market uncertainty surrounding the economic impact of COVID-19. Today, Goldman Sachs analyst Rod Hall released a new note to investors that cut near-term earnings estimates for Apple.

Reported by Barron's, Hall cut Apple's price target from $300 to $265 and lowered revenue forecasts over the coming months

"Following Apple's pre-announcement we lowered our demand expectations for domestic China ... However, we believe that the current situation warrants increased caution regarding global demand outside of China."

Hall notes Apple's decision to close all of its retail locations as part of the reason for their new estimation. Last week, Apple had announced that all of its stores outside of greater China would close until March 27th. However, the company updated that announcement on Tuesday, now saying that its stores would remain closed until further notice.

"Given all of this, we are moving to a central thesis that assumes incremental demand weakness in large global markets up through mid-May with impacts attenuating after that ... If demand impacts are ultimately as severe as those we have seen in China then our model may prove optimistic."

Despite the anticipated struggles to come over the next couple of quarters, Hall remains optimistic that the company will begin to see recovery by the end of the year, and raised his December quarter estimates as a result.

Apple's stock plummeted 12.5% to $243.34 on Monday, but after the White House announced a stimulus package was incoming, its price regained on Tuesday, ending at $252.86.

Tesla told to shut down California factory to help fight the coronavirus

Photo by Becca Farsace / The Verge

Tesla is not exempt from the San Francisco Bay Area’s new coronavirus shelter-in-place order, and should suspend normal operations at its Fremont, California factory for three weeks, according to county officials and the local Sheriff’s office. This comes after Tesla kept its factory open and running today, the first day that the new order was in place.

The shelter-in-place order was announced yesterday by the leaders of six counties in the Bay Area as part of a collective effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus. Citizens were asked not to leave their homes except for “essential activities” like buying food, and “nonessential businesses” were ordered to shut down to further discourage the spread of the virus.

Revolut launches Revolut Junior to help you manage allowance

Revolut is introducing a new product specifically targeted toward kids aged 7-17 years old — Revolut Junior. Revolut Junior is a new app and service that integrates directly with the main Revolut app on the parent’s side.

Parents or legal gardians who are also Revolut users can create a Revolut Junior account for their kid. After that, your kid can download the Revolut Junior app and get a Revolut Junior card.

The new app offers a limited set of features with an interface divided in two tabs — Account and Profile. Kids can see a list of transactions in real time in the Account tab. They can configure card settings in the Profile tab. And that’s about it.

On the other end, parents can control their kids’ spending from Revolut. They can transfer money to a Revolut Junior account instantly. Parents can also access balances and transactions as well as disable some card features, such as online payments. They can also choose to receive notifications when a child is using their card.

The reason why Revolut Junior can attract a ton of users is that Revolut itself already has over 10 million users. It’s going to be easier to convince existing Revolut customers to use Revolut Junior over a custom-made challenger bank for teens, such as Kard or Step. Arguably, the biggest competitor of challenger banks for teens is still cash.

As kids grow up, chances are they’ll switch to a full-fledged Revolut account if they’ve been using Revolut Junior for years. Revolut Junior represents a great acquisition funnel as well.

Revolut Junior is only available to Premium and Metal customers in the U.K. for now. The company will eventually roll it out to more users and more countries.

Revolut plans to add more features to Revolut Junior in the future. For instance, parents will be able to set a regular allowance and financial goals. Kids will get savings options, spending reports, spending limits and more.

"Beastie Boys Story" theatrical release canceled due to coronavirus

We're going to have to wait a little longer for the Beastie Boys documentary.

What you need to know

  • The "Beastie Boys Story" documentary has had its IMAX debut postponed.
  • The film was set to debut at select IMAX locations on April 2nd.
  • The movie will still move forward with its Apple TV+ premiere on April 24th.

The Spike Jonze documentary "Beastie Boys Story" was set to debut in IMAX as a special release on April 3rd. According to a new report by Deadline, the film's theatrical release has now been put on hold. According to IMAX, a new release date has not been decided on yet, but the documentary will still start streaming on Apple TV+ on April 24th.

A spokesperson for IMAX released a statement to Deadline saying that the decision to postpone the film's release was entirely due to the coronavirus pandemic. IMAX also stated that those who had already purchased tickets can get a full refund by contacting their local theater or service they bought the tickets through.

"Our highest priority is the health of our audiences and employees, as well as their families and communities ... Given the COVID-19 pandemic and resulting theatre closures nationwide, we have decided to postpone the theatrical release of 'Beastie Boys Story' to a later date, which will be announced as soon as possible. IMAX ticket holders can receive a full refund by contacting their local theatre. Beastie Boys Story, directed by Spike Jonze, will premiere on Apple TV+ on April 24."

According to the deal that Apple made with the filmmakers when they acquired the film, the IMAX release was set as a "special cut" of the film and is reportedly different than the version that will be streaming on Apple TV+. The film is focused around the founding members of the group and is described as "the story of 3 friends who inspired each other and the world".

Google employees demand better treatment for contract workers amid coronavirus crisis

Illustration by Alex Castro / The Verge

A group of Google employees has sent a memo to company leadership demanding stronger commitments to protect the more vulnerable members of Google’s workforce, primarily its contract workers, during the ongoing coronavirus crisis, according to a report from Business Insider.

The memo is written by both full-time employees and contract workers, otherwise known as “TVC” employees for temporary, vendor or contractor. Google has a longstanding reputation for employing a massive number of contract workers it treats as second-class employees to cut costs and avoid having to foot the bill for the benefits it provides to full-time workers, including access to certain transportation and dining options and other benefits like stock options, paid...

China's BOE may supply the OLED display for the 5.4-inch iPhone 12

Everyone wants to make the tiny iPhone.

What you need to know

  • Chinese display maker BOE has partnered with touch panel maker General Interface Solutions.
  • The companies are reportedly setting themselves up to manufacture Apple's 5.4-inch iPhone 12.
  • The 5.4-inch iPhone, if true, will be Apple's smallest notched phone.

The iPhone 12 has been long rumored to come in three different sizes - a 5.4-inch model, two 6.1-inch models, and one 6.7-inch model. Now, it sounds like at least one of the phones has a possible manufacturer for its display.

According to a new report by DigiTimes, Chinese display maker BOE has partnered with touch panel maker General Interface Solutions to try and win over Apple and provide the OLED display for the rumored 5.4-inch iPhone 12.

Apple is rumored to release four iPhone 12 models this fall, according to supply chain analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. Each device is projected to feature 5G, OLED displays, and sport a new redesign similar to that of the iPhone 4.

A 5.4-inch iPhone 12 would mark the smallest notched display that Apple has shipped yet. The current smallest notched display, by comparison, is the 5.8-inch iPhone 11 Pro. Because of its notched display, a 5.4-inch iPhone 12 would boast even a smaller footprint than the iPhone 8.

A smaller display on a more feature-rich would be welcomed by many, as there is still a huge demand from customers for the rumored iPhone 9, the successor to the beloved iPhone SE.

That said, the 5.4-inch iPhone is predicted to be treated more like a mid-range device and will most likely lack features like the triple camera system and new time-of-flight sensors expected in the higher-end models.

Movies Anywhere now lets you share your iTunes movies with friends

Since we're all home, we might as well start swapping movies.

What you need to know

  • Movies Anywhere now lets you share movies with friends.
  • The Screen Pass feature allows three shares per month.
  • It is currently in beta and limited to 6000 titles.

Movies Anywhere is a unique service during a time when many companies are trying to lock customers into their ecosystem. The service, which is backed by Disney, allows users to bring all of their digital movies, purchased across multiple platforms, into one place.

Now, Movies Anywhere is going to let you share your movies with your friends and family. Reported by The Verge, the service is releasing a new feature called "Screen Pass" that allows users to share up to three films per month to one another. Those that accept a movie from a friend will have access to start it for fourteen days and, once started, given seventy-two hours to watch it.

"With Screen Pass, Movies Anywhere users will be able to share up to three films per month, giving temporary access to the recipient. Users will have seven days to accept the offer, which will give them access to the film for 14 days. Once started, recipients will have 72 hours to finish the film. The three-share limit resets on the first of every month, letting you share more films."

According to the service, there are no limits to how many times you can share one of your titles or who you can share it to. This will allow you to theoretically share one movie with three friends and watch it all together.

"There are no limits as to how many times you can share a film or who you can share it to — meaning, unlike lending someone your prized Mad Max: Fury Road Blu-ray, you can share a copy of the film with three friends in the same month, while still being able to watch it yourself. The only thing recipients will need is a Movies Anywhere account."

The "Screen Pass" feature will start as a beta today and be limited to six thousand titles at launch, but Movies Anywhere says that covers around eighty percent of the films currently on its service. Even better, non-beta users can still have films shared to them until the feature comes to all users later this year.

Movies Anywhere currently connects with movie services like iTunes, Amazon Prime Video, Google Play, and Vudu, and more.

Players can download this major Animal Crossing: New Horizons patch early

Does it count as a Day One patch when it comes out before the first day?

Animal Crossing: New Horizons isn't out yet, but there's already an update ready to go for players.

The Version 1.1.0 patch will be available to download early for those who've pre-ordered and pre-loaded the game. According to a Twitter post, it'll be available on March 18 starting at 6 p.m. PT. Those who don't own the game yet and are planning on purchasing or picking it up on release day (March 20) can download the update as normal.

To clarify, this doesn't mean that Nintendo is releasing the game early (at least, not yet), but this makes it easier for players to get playing as quickly as possible. So if you're planning on hopping into Animal Crossing as soon as it's available on March 20, you'll want to get in on this download so you're all set to go.

It also means players will be able to download the free content that'll be available in the patch, including the Bunny Day special event that begins in April and will contain special items. There will also be online features implemented with the patch.

You might also want to get in on pre-loading the game if you haven't already. At the time of this writing, many are reporting eShop slowdowns. It was also completely down earlier today. Nintendo of America tweeted that players should expect "intermittent errors" even though the issues has been resolved.
