The Walkman is the paintbrush in this quirky art

Freelance graphic designer Echo Yang turned everyday objects into little, autonomous art machines. Yang created The Autonomous Machines Project by making a few simple additions to the mechanisms powering objects like a vacuum and a Walkman so they would produce art. It was an experiment in generative design, which explores how algorithms and computers can create endless variations in outcomes. There's no rhyme or reason that controls the mechanics of these objects, so each piece of art will...

Native American tribes adopt Bitcoin-like currency, prepare to battle US government

The programmer and Native American activist Payu Harris raised a gavel Monday night and vigorously banged the bell to open trading at The Bitcoin Center, a meeting space for virtual currency geeks that looks like an empty art gallery in the middle of New York’s Financial District.

Harris was there to promote MazaCoin, a cousin of Bitcoin that is now the official currency of the seven bands that make up the Lakota nation. After an hour of questions, Harris thanked the small crowd and was promptly accosted by a tall man and a woman in red who wanted to buy some MazaCoin, which Harris was selling for 10 cents apiece. The two trailed him around the room as he hunted for a printer so he could issue the digital currency on paper. MazaCoin...

Los Angeles follows New York with e-cigarette ban

The city of Los Angeles this week moved to ban the use of electronic cigarettes in some public spaces, following similar restrictions passed in New York and Chicago. As Reuters reports, the Los Angeles City Council voted unanimously yesterday to ban "vaping" in restaurants, bars, parks, and other areas where cigarette smoking is prohibited. The ordinance would go into effect 30 days after Mayor Eric Garcetti signs it into law.

The measure first came up for debate in February, after Los Angeles passed new regulations prohibiting the sale of so-called e-cigarettes to minors. Proponents of the ban say e-cigarettes could be used as a gateway for young people to start smoking real cigarettes, though detractors say the ordinance goes too far....

grafico-hungry-tech-giants.jpg

Ford unveils 2015 Focus in Geneva

The 2015 Ford Focus enjoys Ford new global design strategy

Ford hasn't done too bad with its Focus line. In 2012, it surpassed the Toyota Corolla as the world's best selling car model and, according to Ford, it still holds the crown with 12 million sold worldwide. The economical all-round commuter car enjoys a good reputation with reviewers and drivers, so it's not surprising that Ford doesn't go in for radical redesigns, but the company does tweak a bit now and then. This year at the Geneva Motor Show, Ford is unveiling its latest Focus with a slightly sleeker design package containing some new engine and other technologies for the European market...
